I'm think I'm having problems from the ad. Not just the fact that it's wicked loud compared to other sound programs that are running, but occasionally when I open a page here my speakers pop very loudly three times. This isn't when the ad pops up, just when I go to a page and the banner loads. Not cool...
|
just turn off the audio in the browser settings. personally, i'm not too fond of sound in websites anyways.
|
Put me down as one that finds the feardotcom ad extremely annoying.
I hate ads like that and have always appreciated (in the past) that dvdtalk did not use "rich media" ads on their website. I agree that it will turn users off (like me). I understand Geoff needs support to run the site, but not with ads like that... |
Originally posted by SilentOne Given the choice between paying for forum access or rich media pop-ups, I would rather pay for access. But do what you have to do to keep this site running... As for Fear.bomb, any chance (and it was damn_slim) that I would have rented this stinker is long gone. |
Originally posted by diacritic I found the ads to be quite cool. They sparked my interest in the movie, especially after answering the questions for the sweepstakes, then I read the DVDTalk reviews . . . . . .looks like I won't be renting it after all... |
Originally posted by gkleinman I think there is a max of 10x that you can see the ad. So for most of you the rich media part will be over much sooner. |
I'm over the 10X and it's still every single page

:thmbsdwn:
Very annoying. :grunt: |

These ads are a bit creepy. :)
Seven more days to go! |
Well...helps pay for the site. Though it did confuse me for a few seconds at work, I had my speakers on listening to a streaming video (work -related) and then I had this sound...sure enough 15 min. minutes went by :)
-pedagogue ps. At least you are getting Penitration in the industry. I always hear how people will do almost anything to get penitration into such a select group that is hollywood :) |

Can't we at least have popups for movies that DON'T suck? :yack:
|
Just to clarify:
You should get the pop-ups no more than 1x every 30 mins. If you're getting more than that, make sure your browser is accepting cookies. In terms of the rich media ad, you should only get it at a max of 3 times in a day, no closer than 2 hours between them and a max of 7 times over the life of the campaign We realize that not everyone loves these, and we do what we can to meter them so that people aren't completely inundated with the ads |

I DO NOT SEE ANY "commercials durring my favorite TV programs," GK... I only watch HBO and PBS.
Originally posted by gkleinman Just a note... (think of it as a commercial durring your favorite TV program). |
What's gone? I just got a rich media one. They'll be here until Geoff said they'd be here (23rd).
:) |
Yes! They ARE still here... -ptth-

DVDTalk == Pop-up hell!
It's really is getting a bit old. Maybe now that this 'horrible' movie is released to can pull the pop-ups. |
Between this site and DVDFile I dont think I have ever seen a pop up more times than I've seen crapdotcom's....so damn anoying....but if it pays the bills.....

Oh come on! I really like this site but this is getting out of hand. I'm now running a pop-up stopper on my computers, primarily because of DVDTalk. I like this site, but object to all these pop-ups. I thought pop-ups weren't allowed? I posted a thread about this and was told that they weren't pop-ups, but pop-unders. This one clearly is a pop-up and should be removed, unless the rules have changed.

This one clearly is a pop-up and should be removed, unless the rules have changed. DVDTalk DOES NOT USE POP UPS!** I promise! (We did, however, start using pop unders in early July 2002, and had a month long one time pop-up ad deal with Warner.) **Unfortunately, many advertisers are now requiring that pop ups be included in advertising deals, so at times, DVDTalk is forced to use pop up ads. As a general rule, we avoid them when possible, but the recent drop in Internet advertising dollars means that we can no longer turn away advertisers just because they require a pop up ad. There will be a thread announcing each promotion. Please post any problems or questions regarding the pop up in it's respective thread. Thank you for your understanding. |
fear.dot.POW works well.

Sorry Geoff, but this site is following in the footsteps of every other site out there that I can't stand to go to anymore because of the g--damn pop-ups.
I'm all for making money and making the site better for the users but this is getting ridiculous, especially since the site really hasn't gone through too many changes/improvemnts since the two years I have been coming here. Or is it simply to keep it running at this point. Aren't huge porn banners on every page enough? If you must have pop-ups then why not limit them to the main page and leave the forum alone? |

palebluedot,
I think you are over reacting. - The campaign is 11-12 days, and pop-ups are not the norm - There aren't huge porn banners on every page and they only run at night - We do things like impression capping so people don't get inundated with ads - DVD Talk consumes an amazing amount of bandwith and the forum consumes a HUGE amount of this. Traffic has increased over the last year and so has expense. We continue to have to add servers to support the traffic. To run a site like DVD Talk we have 3 options: 1) Charge A Membership Fee (like something awful) 2) Beg For Money from our members (like Home Theater Forum) 3) Run ads which pay for the site (like 90% of the major sites out there) While I myself dislike intrusive advertising, I think it's the lesser of the above 3 evils and in the long run is the most reliable way to ensure we can continue to provide our members with the best service possiable at practicaly NO cost to them! |
Originally posted by CROM1 i was surfing late at night with my speakers turned on and this ad popped out of nowhere! freaked me out! The ad (like previous ones) aren't that bad. Atleast it doesn't pop up after every click. |
I don't mind the popups as it helps the site. However I do mind having to listen to "do you like to watch".
|
Originally posted by The Bus Hey D.doom9.net what are you downloading there? :) I dont mind pop-ups - I understand that maintaning a web page can get expensive. This I have no problem with. However its when they start to talk to me or start making noise and playing music is when I start getting pissed. And surfing with the speakers off isnt an option since I like to play MP3s and CDs while I do. |
I do not like them. It is embarrasing when you are at home or school and it pops up. It looks like you are looking at porn.
