What compensation do mods get?

Do you get paid to be a mod? Are their other benefits? I would consider doing it if their was some $ or freebies.

AndyCapps 08-15-02 05:55 PM

No.

Chicks dig us.

codefree 08-15-02 06:00 PM

 rotfl

I think most of the mods consider it an honor to be a given the position (and then they start doing the job and find out what they got themselves into  )

but if your looking to submit a resume.. send to [email protected] :D

Aside from the ocassional promo item, they get the thanks and gratitude of DVD Talk and the members of the forum.

The mod position has always been a voulenteer one and mods have always come up from the community. We don't pay because we never want it to become a job and frankly we can't afford to. People who moderate do it because they love what they do, they provide an extremely valuable service and are the leaders of the community. Because of this a mod can leave when they've 'had enough w/ moding' or even reduce their time they spend when they are busy outside the forum.

It's a formula that has worked for the past 3 years and I think it has resulted in a great group of people who mod very well.

From my experience, being a mod/admin is also an amazing learning experience. You learn a ton about dealing with people and stepping in to confronataions on the forum with the voice of reason.

Finally, future mods are 'nominated' and reviewed by the current mods, so it's great to hear from people who want to mod, but understand that generally we seek people out rather than the other way around. However, I have to say that no one who mods has come to us with a 'what's in it for me' approach. Most of them do it to give back to the community which they care very much about.

From what I can see they get ridiculed, accused of abusing their power, second guessed, and implicated in vast global conspiracies by the members of the forum.

And while Im here I want to know how I can get the idiot moderators to stop moving my posts.

Sounds about right. :) Truth be told, we're only a part of approximately one-third of all vast global conspiracies. Geoff handles the rest of the vast global conspiracies, as well as all minor global conspiracies, on his own.

And the idiot moderators will never stop moving your posts.

I would like to see a female moderaor added, especially for the Other Forum. Not for equal opportunity reasons or anything like that, but to bring a more balanced perspective. A long time ago, we had DVDer moderate the DVDtalk forum, and I have always liked her views and modding ways. How about it Geoff?

PS. We do have mods now who "act like girls", but that doesn't count :)

It's been discussed and something a number of us would like to see. Sure, we would have to pick up the mess that is the moderator forum, take down the suggestive posters, and start putting the toilet lid down.... but we are cool with it. :)

Seriously, the most important thing, IMO, is not to ask someone to be a mod because they fit a gender profile, but because they are the best qualified for the position. Still, I think we recognize that we possibly lose some valuable perspective by having an all male mod squad. We have no Julie to our Pete and Link.

Geoff has discussed a modship with someone that happens to be female and it may happen soon. That is all I can say before the "gag order" kicks in.
:)

Observant members will note that as yet we haven’t gotten around to medium sized global conspiracies. In addition to her modding duties we’re hoping that any future female Mod would be able to take on this overlooked area.

BTW, I thought it was common knowledge that we Mods only do this job because we have too much time on our hands that would otherwise be wasted on living ;)

The only conspiracy i see here is the fact that they're keeping mum on their bi-annual vacation retreats where all the mods get together. They give away door prizes for the mods that banned the most members, deleted the most posts, moved the most threads. Then they elect their Grand Pooba mod that will serve the term for the next 6 months. It's a very sought after position because everyone wants to wear the little fez hat with tassles and the lime green jacket.

It’s a cape actually, a rather fetching purple one that no-one has seen since Kenwood "left".

If we can just make sure that our first Julie looks like Claire Danes, I'd really appreciate it.

Wow, I almost forgot about that. Here, I'll give you some more info. She's... *mmph*

I thought the purple cape meant a mod caused a Bust type "You only enforce the rules against me" kinda rant.

If you are talking about The Moddies, yeah not too many people are in the know about that. Legend has it, Geoff gives away solid gold DVDs for various achievements in the field of Modding. "Most Bans in a Single Day", "Most Threads Moved", and other such categories yield the illustrious "Geoffy" DVD trophy. I believe RandyC swept the Moddies last year and won a ton of Geoffy's, but this year there's a lot of buzz around benedict. We'll see how it plays out, tickets go on sale around October and act fast because they will sell out.

Isn't DVDer a female mod? I believe her name is Heather.

Didn't know she retired as a mod, thanks guys. (didn't seem like that long ago either)

Gallant Pig 08-16-02 03:21 PM

There are a couple of females that I think would be good as mods (Zoomz and Dolorous come to mind).
