Why am I getting pop-ups?
 

Every time I load a DVDTalk page I get a pop-up from here: http://205.180.85.40/novus/discover.html

Is this a new promo? If so, I think it's a bad choice. Or is it something haywire with this site or my computer?

question - Is it a pop-up or pop-under? We're testing some pop-unders over the holiday weekend. You should not be getting them more than once. If you are you should make sure you have cookies enabled so you will only get 1per 12 hours.

Geoff, I got a pop-under earlier tonight and it did infact only happen once....so far :)

it is indeed a pop-under. However, I really don't like them to begin with, but I also don't like that I have to have cookies enabled to limit them to one every 12 hours. I choose not to have cookies enabled on my home computer, and I don't see why I should be subjected to zillions of these gnats because of that...

I have cookies enabled... I got one pop under. You don't have cookies enabled, so you get more than one. You choose to not have cookies enabled. If you visit sites with pop unders, you've chosen to get them more often. ;)

If they help pay the bills, I'm all for them. Once every 12 hours is a heck of a lot easier to deal with than what I get every time I go to espn.com.

They're no big deal to me. If it helps pay for the bandwith I'm all for them.

I'm sure Geoff would be more than happy to turn 'em off if you send him a check for a couple of grand every month. :)

No big deal really. I get so much spam email now I barely notice anymore.

as long as the ads aren't offensive in nature I'm ok with it
I come here on breaks at work, and if it was one of the ads like mature has (or other at night) I could get fired if someone saw it.

Once every 12 hours? Sounds extremely reasonable for me. Whatever helps to pay the bills.

Well, sometimes businesses choose certain courses of actions because of the wishes of the people they interact with, regardless of whether those people pay them.

Obviously, his site, he can do what he needs to in order to pay for it. But as a user, I hate pop-ups (and you can call them a pop-under, but it's still the same thing), and I am entitled to let the owner of the site know that I am in favor of paying the bills in a different manner. Although I certainly have encountered them in other places, I am disappointed to encounter them here.

Furthermore, many of the sites are configured to only open a window if there isn't one open already, regardless of whether cookies are enabled. The way this pop-up is currently configured, it opens one with every screen refresh. Yes, I know, I choose to have cookies disabled at home (call it paranoia if you like :)), but that doesn't mean I forfeit my right to express an opinion.

Ah, I can see how that could get annoying. As far as pop-up/pop-under goes, a pop-up jumps up in your face, a pop-under is nice enough to show up behind your current window so that you don't have to immediately move it out of the way.

I understand the difference, but it's just a marginal one to me, especially when it's popping under with anything that amounts to a screen refresh.

But I'm only getting them here at home. When I check into DVDtalk at work *cough*during lunch*cough*, I never get one. The funny thing is, on my work computer, I often get the newsletter popup on the main page, and I keep getting randomly logged on and off.

Work computer is IE6 under Windows 2000 with all the updates. Home is IE5.2 with mac OS X.1.5.

It's not the end of the world. At least they load quicker on dialup than those damn X-10 ads on yahoo.

They suck so much.

It's not that I don't find them annoying I do, but I know they help in paying the bills. I'll gladly close one popup ever 12 hrs or so if it helps making money for the site.

Same here. I wouldn't mind having those as permanent ads since they only come up every 12 hours. I bet it would really help out the site. :up:

If you're silly enough to have cookies turned off, then that's your own fault.

OK OK, guys I think the issue has been addressed here. We're very aware that not everyone is a fan of pop-unders. I'm no fan of them either, but 1 pop under ever 12 hours shoulld be pretty workable for most of you. For those of you with cookies turned off, I can recommend you look at installing a second browser (IE if you use Netscape or Netscape of you Use IE) with cookies on, and only use it for DVD Talk. That way you can protect your privacy in general and know that we're a trusted site for cookies.

It's always a balance between acomidating member needs and wishes and supporting the site, so believe me when I say that we usually tend to err on the side of acomidating members v. what we really need to run the site so even with the pop-unders there's a great deal of comprimise to do 1 per 12 hours and under v above.
