copyrights and locked threads

Hey. Question... and I'm not trying to start an argument here... just trying to get a better understanding of what is / what is not allowed. I posted a thread in the music forum about mp3s of the chris cornell/rage against the machine demo. The thread was promptly locked. Yet I've seen threads before where people have linked specific sites that host certain mp3s or pointed people toward audiogalaxy/kazaa and indicated which terms to search for. Furthermore, people in the Other forum post pictures from Maxim, Stuff, and other publications all the time... Are the things that get through just oversights? Are there certain guidelines for things that are specifically allowed and not allowed? Thanks in advance.

Although I cannot speak for the non-music examples cited....

.... here is an extract from the rules that I pointed you to in one of the locked threads:

The following is strictly prohibited on the DVD Talk Forum and may result in immediate account suspension:
• Posting Information on how to defraud any company or promotion of any kind of illegal or unethical activity
• Anything that violates the trademark or copyright of another company including anything that may violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
I had quoted that self-same extract in the past couple of days in Music Talk. Additionally, with regard to possible "inconsistencies", here is something from what was posted in that FAQ I linked to in the aforementioned locked thread

There are hundreds of posts everyday and we can't read them all. We are trying our best as our schedules permit.
I expect others will be able to respond later with specific comments and/or reposts of previous statements.

One point. I would close a thread that was about copying or how to copy copyrighted material. Or how to locate/purchase a specific copyrighted item.

Discussions about Kaaza or MP3s or Gnutella or whatever are not automatically about enfringing on copyright laws. There are many items that are not illegal that are found or transmitted using peer-to-peer sharing.

So, I would leave open a thread asking what the best method of downloading songs is. I would close a thread asking what the best method of downloading the new copyrighted album from a specific artist.

If I knew of the thread, and I knew the work was copyrighted.

Posting pics is in itself a large discussion involving a very gray area. Same with quoting copyrighted text from news sources. As far as I know, we don't have any specific rules written about those things and if we did, we should have some discussions about that.
