is the ignore feature active?

just curious...have no plans to use it. just wondering if it was active.

Jackskeleton 04-18-02 11:17 PM

lets test it... can you see me? ;)

Hmm, obviously not.

Seriously, I'd love to have this feature. I'm sure some people feel the same way about me that I do about them. Sure, it's great in theory to just mentally ignore the people whom you think contribute nothing positive of any kind to the forum, but it would be nice to be able to sh|tlist them completely and not have to worry about it. I guess that's a very negative outlook on things, but of the thousands of regular posters, there aren't but one or two people I'd like to "ignore." Probably more than that would be content ignoring me anyway.

could you imagine the strain this feature would cause on the forum?

with how much I post alone, and how MANY people would have me on their ignore list?

Josh H 04-19-02 12:34 PM

It was enabled a good while back and it didn't seem to slow the forum down. I believe someone posted that it doens't tax the server at all, but I could be thinking of some other feature. I think the main argument against it was that it would lead to duplicate posting, as someone would post the same topic that someone on their ignore list had posted earlier.

It was a handy feature, but I really don't have a need for it anymore as I don't post in Other.

I wonder what's taking twikoff and joshhinkle so long to post in this thread? Anybody seen them around in the last couple of days?

yea.. now that you mention it.. I think I do remember someone saying that it doesnt tax the server at all..

but wouldnt an ignore feature lead to alot of duplicate posts and possibly duplicate threads?

and how does that work if you have the thread starter on ignore? you dont see the entire thread?

Probably something like this.

I need to stop doing that.

I believe that was the forum messaging feature that was reported to have a minimal effect on the server.

If the ignore feature is turned on, you don't see the persons post at all, or does it just blank it out and put in some canned language? ("message from ignored member deleted", etc)

zak52 04-19-02 06:38 PM

Over on another board I post at if you put someone on ignore you can see their name but their post doesn't show up. I don't know if it would work the same way here.

It might well have been. I knew it was one or the other. The messaging feature is useless IMO, as the forum is already a message board. You don't really need a message system within a message system. I guess it might cut down on some of the conversational threads in Other, but then again mods could just close those and tell members to go to the chat room or use AIM or ICQ.

I support this feature...but then again I'm a grumpy old curmudgeon who hates everybody...which would mean I'd put all of y'all on ignore and have the whole board to myself!

Heat: it looks like this....
