Toughts?

With all of the sports threads that turn up in other (from football to wrestling) I do believe something like this would be more useful and more popular, for that matter, then a book talk. Not to take anything away from that, of course. Some have complained in other at times at the over abundance of, say, wrestling threads and a place for all sports related conversation would certainly clean that up.

One might argue that it has nothing to do with DVDs but, in retort, one might also say that neither does Video Game Talk and Book Talk. The forums have expanded to much more then just DVD chatter and something like a sports forum might be an asset.

I am personally neutral on the idea at this point. But, before naysayers get too loud, I thought I'd say that Geoff has said he is considering the idea. It was in the Forum 2002 ideas thread or something.

In the recent DVD Talk Survey 'Sports Talk' got the lowest interest in terms of if we were to add another area:

Although it seems from the above percentage Directtv/The Dish Forum socred the lowest with 5.8 as opposed to Sports Talk at 8.1, I did not know that this survey had been conducted. Although I still think it would be a popular forum and I thank you "G" for your speedy reply. :)

Edited to add: Add a vote for me for the DVD Easter Egg Forum. That would be a nice addition as well, IMO.

I think Sports should stay in Other. There's just a lot of activity right now with the NFL playoffs and upcoming Super Bowl.

I'm also wondering where this survey came up...I never saw one or heard of one anywhere. Maybe this survey should have been more public in some sort of announcement on the forums like the Best of 2001 DVD stuff and all that, just my opinion though.

I would have voted for a Sports Forum.

The moderators might have trouble distinguishing what is a sport. ;)

That's the other problem I see with this.

I have an opinion on a dedicated Easter Egg forum which others may or may not share. In reality how much discussion can you really have about Easter Eggs....the movie either has them (meaning they've been found) or doesn't (meaning they may have them, but they haven't been found). I can see this forum being full of "Does anyone know if there are Easter Eggs in movie x"??? Perhaps a better idea would be to start an Easter Egg database with detailed instructions on finding the Eggs. It seems that idea would be more useful and productive then an Easter Egg forum. Just my two cents.

I think that's a great point. Plus, how hard is it to search for the DVD you're looking for along with "easter egg"?

...and this is what's in the wings. I just have to finish up a couple of other projects before I can devote any time to it.

Was this part of the survey you were talking about in this thread? It sounds it was posted on the main dvdtalk page?

I realize that it's been done. I'm simply saying that if Easter Egg information is desired from this site, a database of them makes more sense to me than a forum dedicated to them. Again, I don't see an Easter Egg forum being filled with much more than "How do I find the Easter Egg" or "Does movie "x" have any Easter Eggs".

Those polls are kind of ineffective since you have to go to www.dvdtalk.com to see them. I good bit of people that use the forums all the time, myself included, just have the forum frontpage bookmarked and never go to the main page.

At any rate, I wouldn't mind seeing a sports forum. Sports threads are pretty much the only thing I go to other for anymore and it can be a hassle to have to dig through all the other crap to find them.

We so don't need this or any other additional Other split-offs.

I agree, you have to keep something in Other.

How about we just get a St. Louis Cardinals forum for classicman2 and Andy Capps. Then, they both can jabberjaw about how good their team will be, up until that fateful day when playoffs start. :p :D

Seriously, though, keep the sports in Other. It provides an interesting mix.

Come to think of it, I am going to modify my previous statement.

A WWF Forum would be a good thing. We would be doing society a service to get all the WWF fans in one forum so that we can keep an eye on them.

I was disappointed that Music Talk was split off. Please don't make a sports forum.

How about just a Jules forum? We could finally rid ourselves of him from otter land. :p

I've never understood people who whine about stuff being taken out of other. The only people that the old other (i.e. when music, TV, books, video games etc were all still discussed there) that benefitted from the setup were the ones that have nothing better to do with their lives than spend hours in other each day. It was cluttered, and it was a hell of a chore to find the topics that interest you. This also limited the discussion on the various topics, as many people interested in the topics wouldn't bother posting in other, and many of the threads fell off the front page to quickly because of all the banal threads like word association and "chat like" threads. Since they've been split off, the topics get a ton more discussion because each thread is assured of staying on the front page for at least a day in the new specific forums. Other is also a lot better off, as it isn't as clutter. I still don't post their at hardly at all because I don't like the subject matter of most posts, nor have any desire discussing anything with most of the people that post there. I pretty much only go for the sports threads, and it would be nice if they had their own forum, even though it would be offtopic for this site-- so is book talk. It would further reduce the clutter in others for those that like that forum, and there would be more sports discussion just like having a specific forum has generated more discussion, and better discussion, on all the other topics that have been split out of other.

I agree with almost everything you said, and the Other forum is quickly becoming a place that I can't even get or give any information. I think there's the probability of being enough sports-related talk to justify it having its own forum. I personally think it's much easier to talk about music in Music Talk than it ever was in Other, and I think the same would be said of Sports.
