Do you sell our emails?

I've been getting emails from companies that I have never visited their website. I noticed that some of them have banner ads on this forum. Is there a connection here?

I haven't noticed anything strange coming my way that could be associated with this site. I think Geoff and his website are above that form of generating revenue.

Sorry thread hijack, but Geoff please take a look at my further replies to the lack of email for subscribed threads. Thanks.

Did you read DVDTalk's privacy policy? I think that would answer your question...

I don't know if Geoff sells them, but I'm sure other sites come here to data mine our profiles.
miss cleo has sent email to many members, at the email adress they use here

I've been getting some e-mails lately sent to my address used for the forum. I'm sure Geoff doesn't sell our addresses - and you can turn your e-mail off in the profile and there won't be any way for these bastards to get ahold of us.

Technically, aren't there anti-spam laws that prohibit people from doing exactly what these people are doing?

Just because you get someones email from a forum or other place on the net doesn't mean they wanted that person to email them constantly.

The bigger issue is whether or not they ever get enforced

We do not sell e-mail addresses.

If theres a mailing or e-mail that comes from us it clearly has DVD TALK in the from address.

It's VERY possiable that spammers strip email addresses off of forums and web pages. I get a ton of spam each day and it annoys the hell out of me.

i think this is much more then possible..

I was cruising my normal tech sites the other day.. and noticed an app that is used to grab email addresses from forum webpages or from newsgroups and generate a list that can be pasted directly into emails.. it sucks that tools like that are so easy to come across

interresting
do you know if any are open source?
I'd love to look through the source code and rewrite it to get other stuff besides email addresses

no clue, I just happened to notice the program once.. didnt pay much attention to it

what kindof information would you want to collect though?

and couldnt the same type of info be collected by simply rewriting a search engine?

mikehunt 12-04-01 06:35 PM

not sure what I'd collect, probably just mess around with it
didn't think about search engine code, that'll probably be easier to find
thanks

You mean you don't want to lose 20 pounds in 5 days?
