Geoff: been getting pop-ups lately
Has only happened 2 or 3 times. DVDTalk is the only window open. Here is the latest one (it looks familiar, I think it is the same one everytime): http://205.180.85.40/travelzoom/index.html
If this is supposed to be happening, no problem. But, if you aren't aware of it, you might want to check into it. |
I'm getting some crappy Casino popups. :(

Pop-ups or pop-unders?
We're testing some pop-unders in the OTHER forum only see: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hlight=testing If not you could have a spyware app on your system which you can detect and remove with Adaware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ As I said, we're testing this out in Other right now. So far my disdane for pop-unders and the low revenue associated with them so far... I'm leaning towards axing them. But here's the problem, the OTHER forum looks like it consumes the MOST amount of bandwith of any forum on DVD Talk, and sadly it accounts for the lowest amount of revenue of any of the big forum areas on our site. So I am trying to do what I can to equal out that equation. I've weighed a LOT of ideas and I'm experimenting with a few things to see what we can do. We're moving providers soon, mainly because 1) We need a bigger server and 2) Because our bandwith consumption is WAY out of hand and we need a provider who can support that at a cost we can survive with. |
Geoff, open your ears: Do A Donation Drive! :) Ask for a minimum $10 donation, accept via PayPal or Check (Snail Mail).
I think you'd have tons of success. It worked great at HTF. |
No problem. :)
I read the thread about the new banners, but somehow missed the part about the pop-unders. As has been said before "You gots to pay the bills!" |

If moderating the Other right now is hard, imagine what it would be link having to try to enforce a 10 times posting rule.... arrrg
I have thought of a donation drive, haven't ruled it out, but I've always tried to see if we could cover everything by ads. So I want to do that before I start a donation drive :) |
yeah, we talked about a donantion drive at the chicago gathering.
i say  |
Is putting a 10 post count limit that hard? (or any other number in that neighborhood?). Software can't handle that?
I know I've seen a few message boards with similar software (looks) to this site and you couldn't post more than once in 90 seconds for some reason. |
brian: vBulletin, as far as I know, does not support (without some by-hand tweaking, at least) limiting posts in a single forum in a message board to a given number.
vBulletin does include flood control, but I don't believe it's forum-specific. A 90-second limit would punish users in other forums because of the load in Other. |
In case I wasn't clear, I'm not in favor of posting limits. It just wouldn't fit the big vision of DVD Talk

It just wouldn't fit the big vision of DVD Talk I for one don't mind the pop unders if it's limited to the otter farm. Also, the donation drive is perfectly acceptable. I gave the last time and will give every couple months without a doubt. |

Little things like replacing the graphic buttons with text for example. |
we could sell brownies or have a car wash :D
and a 10 post limit?? -eek- |
Maybe one shouldn't load <i>every time a page is opened.</i>
I just brought up my task bar and saw -- and this is an exact count -- 20 Discover Card windows open. I realize you need to pay for the site, but that is extremely annoying. And when I send this, I'll get two more... |
I already have coined a name for your Donation Drive: "Geoff-Aid", you could have celebrity otters have a performance and man the phone lines.
|
I've got at least $10 sitting in paypal if you do decide to try a donation drive. I think tightening the HTML just by changing the internal links would make a world of difference.
|
Geoff, one of your pop-unders just popped up! I'm minding my own business (-eek-) reading a thread and WHAM! When I closed it I noticed that the pop-under was gone.
Do you suppose trying this out in The Otter might have been a mistake? I mean, if there's any place to pick up bad habits... |
Start a donation drive. :)
|
I say do a donation drive, maybe with a raffle along with it.
Make a "virtual wall" that has the names of people who have donated at different levels. As for the raffle, do something like everyone who donates $20 gets put in the running for a DVD or something. Hell, you could even do a raffle for people who wanted to danate at least $50... the winner could have Jacks' posts, and make him go back to zero! -k ### |

Weighing in.... Pop-ups and unders are my biggest pet peeves on the Net. I don't go to Sci-fi.com any more because of them. You can use Pop-up Killer to deal with them, but it does make pages load slower.
If looking for feedback, I'm in favor of getting rid of them. Some of the ideas here are great on how to raise some extra $$$. Raffles are always good and you may need to go to a membership fee. |
I agree on the pop-under ads. .They are my biggest turn off when visiting a site.
I dunno about a membership fee. I think a donation might be a good route.. Suggest a min donation of $5 up to however much the person wants to donate. I think if you spell out exactly why you are looking for donations, more people would be inclined to donate. I know I'd certainly donate $5-10 to keep this great site up and running. I'm sure othres would feel the same way. You could just create a new paypal account(as everyone seems to have a personal account). And if they don't and use your paypal link to open a new account, you also get a referral fee in addition to the donation. So it would be a win/win. |
Guys, the popunder test is over. I hate them. They're history
