How are "status titles" assigned?

I think you have to sleep with one of the mods to get a status change. I have asked to be made Pope of all Other Forum and San PantyJose, yet I remain whatever status I am.

Hint on how to not get a custom status...post in a mod's thread and tell the mod the thread sucks because it was not in the form of a question. :)
