Backlashing new members!
I'm relatively new on the board. And first I want to point out by far this is the best discussion board i've come across. And I want to applaud and give appreciation to the creators of this site which is due.
What I've notice though, is that here and there we have a brand new member posting for the first time on a topic that's been said numerous times. Most of you are kind and tend the member the ropes of Dvdtalk. However I do see sarcastic backlashing to downright rudeness to the point where i wouldn't blame the new member not to post again in fear of a duplicate topic. I know. I was one of them. My first topic was on a hopeful release of Goodfellas. Obviously I was new and for the love of dvds, I learned rather quickly the do's and don'ts.I don't know if anyone checked the dvdfile board. It's smaller but it's also full of great spontainous threads. Don't get me wrong Dvdtak is by far my favorite for boards! My main fear is besides scaring new members away is people fearing to bring new topics to the board in fear of backlashing. Not every new member will spent time doing search for their topics. Most are still new to the ways of the site. And I also see new topics with a different twist of an old thread but with a different angle which i think is wonderful!( And I'm not talking about SW or GF's where you really need a one and only thread). But alot people fail to see that and severely backlash them anyway. Now there's no blame for the mods. They are just doing their jobs. They want people to be able to shell out creative and spontainous topics but they don't want duplicate threads to go haywire and i agree and respect that. Most of us are great, but some of the older members, I think can be a little more polite with the new members and not be like helloooooooo..I'm tired of hearing this again. Go do a search!! And those are the some of the nicer remarks. I know I'm rambling. If I'm off my rockers, feel free to backlash me:) |
Do a search, I think this has been brought up before. -ptth-

I would say it's more growing pains than anything. I think it is alright for members to tell new members that they should do a search first. They just shouldn't be mean when they do it.
Now, I always try a search first. Even when I post a new topic, sometimes I'll start out saying that I did a search first and couldn't find it. Even going as far as apologizing if the topic is already out there. Which is all kind of rediculous, but some people seem to take it personally when a second or third thread is posted about the same topic. |
I think a big concern i have is that i don't want people to be afraid of being really creative and passionate of their talks on dvds in fear of backlashing. Iv'e seen people literally begging and almost scared saying things like..I swear i looked in the search. I'm Sorry ...SORRY if this was posted before. Please don't hurt me. I didn't know!..like 4 or 5 times in between other backlasher comments in the same thread.
All I'm saying is that i check this site everyday for new and fresh opinions even with different angles of older topics from new members. Remember we are one community and we are all friends here with one passion. DVDS! I really want to see this site keep growing, and heartwarmingly wecome new members. Show them the ropes. Yes! But be courtious and polite. And who knows..maybe their topic is just a bit different from a similer older topic. So let's not jump down their throat so quickly. We were all new members at one point. So we should Know.:) |
The search function is pretty crappy compared to the old forum software but when there is a thread still on the first page the posters gonna take some ribbing. That said everybody in this joint has made that mistake and were still here. If a new member is THAT sensitive their not gonna last long around here. You gotta have a sense of humor.

if you see this kind of behavior then i would email the mods. they are great and they will put a stop to behavior that is damaging to dvdtalk or that attacks a member.
remember we need to look out for one another. I am sorry you had this happen to you. I am glad however that you are here and still posting. Welcome and let's all join together to help those new members :) |

Each post has a link to "report this post to a moderator" and each forum lists moderators at the top of the thread list. If someone is out of line with any member, new or old, the right thing to do is let one of us know. :) |
Well, I've noticed that many long-time members skip right past other posts in a thread and wind up repeating what's already been said (sometimes many times) ... which they'd know if they bothered to scan the replies. To me, that's much more annoying than some neophite asking about Back to the Future. It's just plain rude. You wouldn't do that in normal conversation.

I've noticed that.... <img src="http://www.duhspot.com/users/smiley/s/otn/happy/burnout.gif">

Noticed what? What are you guys talking about? ;)
Seriously, for a community of thousands of members this place is run extremely well. I don't know if it's good members or good moderation but when you have this many people there are bound to be problems. I run a community of a few hundred members and for a while we had a few trouble makers. It gets old really fast. I don't know how it is here but I had people b!tch!ng up a storm about how the boards were run but not one of them ever took the time to report a post to me. It's there for a reason, please use it. :) |
What really hacks me off is when people skip right past the replies and wind up repeating what's already been said. That is so rude and annoying! These people should be Banned immediately.

Well, I've observed that plenty of veterans here ignore previous posts and re-state what's been mentioned before. ... makes me want to punch them.
The stupid jerks. |
Heya, Rainet
Some people see that "Member" description under your name and flashback to their highschool days picking on freshmen. But the majority of people here make it worth staying. (my first post here was "Godfather: When Will It Be Released?") :D ... I think the mods pity me ;) |

You wouldn't do that in normal conversation. Seriously though, when you're new you tend to be much more sensitive to little barbs and jabs of the old-timers simply because you don't know those people. I don't blink an eye now when someone starts picking on me, it's just so normal ;) http://www.homestead.com/McHawkson/files/coolkitten.gif |
I don't mind newer members starting threads about topics that have been covered, but when a veteran member joins in the discussion and fails to read the prior posts and just starts repeating what has already been said, well that really burns me up. :)

I don't mind it so much when new members repeat old threads, but I've noticed that a lot of long-time members skip past most of the posts in a thread and start beating an already ailing horse to within an inch of its life, stomp on its head for good measure, and then beat it some more. Then head back inside to grab a Coke before commencing the beating again.
