Why do "new" posts get reset if I take too long?

Often I will casually stroll though the new posts over the course of a morning while I'm doing other things. But I've noticed that if I take too long, like over an hour, all the posts since my last visit will suddenly be flagged as "old" posts. Why is that, and how can I prevent it?

The forum has a session timeout, so it can try to track when your visits end, so that it can mark any posts after that time as "New" when your next session starts. I believe the session timeout is somewhere between 20-30 minutes.

That is, if you don't do anything on the site for 20-30 minutes, it will believe you've left, and reset the "New" posts. You can keep your session active if you visit a new thread or forum or refresh a thread you have open every 15 minutes or so.
