Geoff - You do know how slow the entire site has been, don't you?

Just wanted to make sure you were aware. For about the last hour it has been running extremely slowly. Like you're feeding the internet through a 56K modem.

The traceroute looked just fine and other sites I checked are fine too, so it's not on my end or anything between us. Looks like a server or load problem.

I've been noticing it too... it gotten better in the past 10 minutes or so, but it still seems very labored.

yea.. its back to normal now.. but it did seem slow about 20 minutes ago.. which btw, corresponds with when it reached its higher active members point..

but before we go blaming the software, this had gotten pretty common with the old version as well.. during the busiest times, there is always a slow down

I haven't seen it at normal speeds since an hour before I first posted about this. Maybe it gets merely very slow at times compared to extremely slow, but that's the best I've seen. Quite a difference from last night and earlier today (and the old normal).

When it's slow, please do and post a trace route. It's really important in seeing if its a software issue or a net issue.

I know that at a point today it was slow and I did a trace route and found that it was net congestion not software that was making it slow.

Here's a current one. Essentially the same as the one I saw earlier today:

6 10 ms 20 ms 10 ms sl-gw28-stk-10-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.229.9]
7 10 ms 20 ms 10 ms sl-bb22-stk-8-1.sprintlink.net [144.232.4.117]
8 10 ms 20 ms 20 ms 144.232.18.158
9 10 ms 20 ms 20 ms 156.at-5-1-0.XR1.SAC1.ALTER.NET [152.63.52.210]
10 10 ms 20 ms 20 ms 0.so-0-0-0.TR1.SAC1.ALTER.NET [146.188.144.146]
11 80 ms 90 ms 90 ms 127.at-6-3-0.TR1.DCA8.ALTER.NET [146.188.141.113]
12 91 ms 90 ms 80 ms 197.at-5-0-0.XR1.TCO1.ALTER.NET [152.63.32.189]
13 80 ms 80 ms 91 ms 193.ATM6-0.GW9.TCO1.ALTER.NET [152.63.38.21]
14 90 ms 90 ms 90 ms verio-gw.customer.alter.net [157.130.49.214]
15 90 ms 90 ms 90 ms 216.167.88.100
16 90 ms 90 ms 90 ms 216.167.88.133
17 90 ms 91 ms 90 ms wwwdvdtalk.com [216.167.93.69]

Those timings are pretty much normal for what I see. And response is still fairly slow, my browser typically shows 14-17K/sec download speeds as I wait for a page to load. I'm not used to seeing any download speed showing as pages load.

I do know that it may feel slower, the old software version would load the page and then the graphics, the new version will wait to load the whole page before displaying.

I did count on a load of the same page on the old and new system at the same time, both timed out at the same rate.

Ok, but I'm kind of used to that behavior with Netscape anyway.

I'll do some timings tomorrow and let you know if the problem persists. It really is much slower than it was yesterday after the software change though.

For me, I noticed a slight longer delay with loading up the page. And one other thing, while the new graphics are nice, I can't list as many threaded topics on a page anymore, each line takes up more space than it did before. I noticed that some icons are smaller, which helps, but still, on the part of the webpage that lists the threads, it's spaced out weird.

I'm really impressed with how smoothly this transition has gone, Geoff. I've been hammering the site almost non-stop, and I've hardly noticed a blip in performance. Excellent, excellent work.

You guys must be running some special machines or fast connections. I am taking 45 -90 seconds to load the initial page using Netscape 4.7, dial-up ISP, 56K modem. That's WITHOUT images. I am not having any trouble anywhere else on the net right now. Definitely the new software for me: started with that change and has been that slow every time I login. Really it is so slow it's unusable. That's 45 seconds+, every time I return to the site after examining a thread. The threads, incidentally, seem to load at something like normal speed. Guess my old system can't hack it any more. It is a little bit faster with IE 5.15, maybe 10 to 15 seconds quicker. Don't think it is my ISP, since everything else is working pretty much as usual. Hate to complain, but I liked the old way better.

The site has slogged down again. Just as bad as when I originally posted. You can almost feel it huffing and puffing, and the user feel is quite unpleasant to the point where you don't want to open long threads if you don't have to. I'm seeing the download speeds again during page loading, around 12K/sec.

Here's your traceroute.

6 10 ms 20 ms 10 ms sl-gw28-stk-10-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.229.9]
7 10 ms 20 ms 11 ms sl-bb22-stk-8-1.sprintlink.net [144.232.4.117]
8 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms 144.232.18.158
9 10 ms 10 ms 20 ms 156.at-5-1-0.XR1.SAC1.ALTER.NET [152.63.52.210]
10 10 ms 20 ms 20 ms 0.so-0-0-0.TR1.SAC1.ALTER.NET [146.188.144.146]
11 91 ms 80 ms 90 ms 127.at-6-3-0.TR1.DCA8.ALTER.NET [146.188.141.113]
12 90 ms 90 ms 90 ms 197.at-5-0-0.XR1.TCO1.ALTER.NET [152.63.32.189]
13 80 ms 90 ms 90 ms 193.ATM6-0.GW9.TCO1.ALTER.NET [152.63.38.21]
14 90 ms 91 ms 90 ms verio-gw.customer.alter.net [157.130.49.214]
15 90 ms 90 ms 90 ms 216.167.88.100
16 90 ms 90 ms 90 ms 216.167.88.133
17 90 ms 90 ms 90 ms wwwdvdtalk.com [216.167.93.69]

Edit: I thought I'd try rebooting in case it was a local-to-me problem. From what I've seen over the last minute, things are back to normal. I can tell the new forum uses a huge amount of CPU power (at least in Netscape). I wonder if it's a problem with the user's machine and/or Netscape that accumulates after a while. My memory utilization was very low even before the reboot, but the speedup is just too coincidental. It's entirely possible the speed may be directly related to the available amount of CPU resources.

Response really sucks big time! What did you do, change to a colo in Cuba?

Here's the ever-popular traceroute, this time showing where the trouble is:
