DVD Talk Forum - Do we really need the new forum software?

It's not worth a hardware binge. In the end this is all just simple communication with friends (and antagonists).

Hi all, Just to clear up some misconceptions...1st off the new version of vBulletin 2.x is faster than the old one in many ways but mostly in database indexing and such. Second is that there are alot of new features for the admin as well as the moderators (who now get their own control panel). The users also have alot of added functionality as well. Some of the new features are:

Co-branding / Multiple style,template sets
Support for Avatars
User control panel
Private messaging
Buddy list
Nested forums (unlimited depth subcatagories)
Upgraded search engine
GZip pages (to reduce page download time)
Real-time forum statistics
Download / Upload template sets
Moderator's control panel
Revamped user permissions system
Improved support for moderators
Backup database feature
Much more!

Thanks for your post. Unfortunately 2.0 is exponentially greater in terms of server load. It's a great piece of software but I don't know if it's ready for deployment on such high volume sites as DVD Talk

Sorry but I have to disagree with you. I work with alot of very big sites that far exceed the concurrent connections that you have and seen substantial speed increases with version 2.x, the average load with 60-100 concurrent users is about .2 - .3 versus 2.6 - 10+ with version 1.x.x. If you experienced anything short of an increase with your attempt with version 2.x your problems may lie in your database which can easily be resolved.

I liked the PM feature. was less thrilled with the look. I thought the buddy feature had merit and could become fun.

I never have been big for polls and had hopes it would become a moderator only feature for when they wanted to ask us something.

I'm in the process of writing some hacks for the Gold release and will be making Polls and Attachments a selectable item in the control panel, as for Polls for Moderators and Admins only...hmmm sounds like a nice idea, I could whip that up...
