I came here awhile back looking for DVD info, and found out that I like this place. But jesus, this place is becoming porn central station. Every other thread in the Other forum is either a "babe thread" or a thread with a few risqu photos of some smut actress, then with links to other very highly explicit images.

That's great for a 2 bit operation, but for a place like DVDtalk that's just on the edge of of mainstream respectibility, it is kinda strange.

The porn threads do nothing more than help a bunch of teenage boys and older single men jerk off at their computers while browsing the other forum.

There is a lot to be said about Anandtech's much stricter moderation, both pro and con, but that place does have a much more professional and well run feel to it. If it were up to me, I'd say drop the smut threads. Not to mention that 90% of images posted are copyrighted pics.

Well, there is 4 mature posts on the front page right now, so I would not say that it is every other thread. ;)

Yea, there are times when it seems like there is a bunch of them, but if they bother you just do not click on them. Also, if you came here for the dvd's why are you hanging out in the other forum? Stick the the talk forum and be happy.

dvdnaut, you came looking for DVD info -> they are available in the 4 DVD related forums. The Other Forum is for general discussions that doesn't deal with DVD's, hardwares, or bargains. Basically, you can discuss almost anything in the Other Forum including things that are sexy/mature in nature. As tjr2mental pointed out, at the time of his post, there were only 4 mature threads in the first page which isn't exactly a "lot."

If you don't like a mature thread, don't click on it, it is that simple.

dvdnaut, think of it this way: we try to be very lenient and tolerant to the many needs of our members. which is why even though DVD Talk is a serious and a professional web site, DVD Talk also includes the fun and irreverent Other Forum. but then sometimes, some people go a little too far and the mods have to take actions, but usually the Other Forum is a place where almost anything goes^*.

A good example for all those that say the mods are too strict on porn. There is no way to make everyone happy, so we try to compromise and follow some guidelines.

Wow mighty explicit talk. I was not exactly expecting to see this kind of discussion in the feedback forum. I guess I will need to go back to the other forum where it is safe ;)


I think that is why they require mature tags on threads that are going to show photos that should not be seen by people who want to avoid any nudity.

I tend to open those threads first but then that is just me. I also have not ever done what you talked about in your post. there are better places to perform essential bodily functions :D

Other does tend to get "awash in pr0n" occasionally, where it seems like the picture you paint of every other thread being a spawning ground of <b>[MATURE]</b> pics is accurate. Usually it's not that bad, but sometimes I wonder if even the lower, average amount is too much.

I'll admit that I think it gets out of hand sometimes too. But, I don't really know how the mods could regulate it without banning it altogether.. which would likely upset just as many, if not more members.

As other's have said, just don't click on the threads if the bother you. They are clearly labeled, and easily avoidable. That's the only possible solution to please everyone.


There are more than three, I can think of 6 off the top of my head. Also, there aren't many women in any of the forums here besides other either. The fact is that this is an electronics/technology oriented site, and that is going to attract more guys than gals. Guys tend to be more interested in new technology than girls. There are lots of girls who love this kind of stuff, it's just a much smaller percentage of them, than it is of guys.

If you came here looking for DVD info, don't go into the Other forum. There is no DVD-related information contained therein. Seems simple enough to me.

The main problem I see with the mature and porn threads is that there is no mechanism here on DVDtalk to weed out those who are underage. Yes, porn is easily accessible for those who do a simple search on the internet, but allowing such threads just makes it that much easier to view explicit pics.

It is not that big an issue, as it used to be when DVDtalk had a slightly better image within the industry, and actually hosted chats, etc. with studio and film types. Hmm, maybe that says DVDtalk has fallen so far out of respectability, but thats a topic for another thread....

Our goal is to make every just slightly unhappy. If we lean too much one way or another one group is very unhappy and the other is happy. Tough to balance, but we try.

I would suggest people who are offended by these threads to occasionally look in them. We do our best to keep a no nudity on the forum rule. And the only links we allow are links to pics with tasteful nudity not sex for the sake of titilation.

and all those pics are copyrighted. Which is against forum rules, however you guys do NOTHING to weed it out. It's your responsibility to keep copyrighted stuff off. Brooke Burke pics? all copyrighted.

well to me, pics of women spreading their ***** lips open with their fingers isn't tasteful nudity. Michelangelo is tastful nudity, some 18 year old ho from Hustler isnt.

I've always thought that was a pointless argument. This is a dvd related site. Young children aren't going to go on line, search for dvd sites, and join a dvd related board. The youngest member I've came across was 15, and at that age he's probably already searching for porn. In otherwords, that argument is futile, because children aren't members of the site, and teenagers are already curious and looking at porn and having sex so who cares. Besides it's a moot point because porn is not allowed here. Even nude pics most be posted as links. I see no problem with teenagers looking at picks of naked girls and I -rolleyes- at anyone who does.

I also -rolleyes- at people not intelligent enough to not click on threads labeled [MATURE][Pics] It's a simple concept. Unfortunatley the intelligence level of these forums has dropped dramatically in the past year or so. As for the pics being copyrighted, why complain, that's the administrations problem, not yours.

As for the copyrighted work, there is something called fair use that I believe applies here. Look it up. And please do not tell me what my responsibilites are here. You do not know what they are, only Geoff does.

1) You are exaggerating the situation re: what the nudity is.
2) That is your opinion. We try to live up to the standards of the community. Your options are to accept it, ignore it, protest it to try to change it, or leave. Looks like you are trying to change it, an admirable attempt, but I think it is one that will fail.

Your attitude really stinks, you know that? I was at my wits end trying to be polite. But you are clearly an impolite person. And Geoff is the person who would have any reason to be concerned about your threats to tell on DVDTalk for the posts that its members made, not me. Your threats are hollow to me. Try emailing him if you want to make sure he hears what you have to say.

Being rude to the mods isn't going to help you get your point across. Being a smart ass just reduces your credibility. Anyway, all the copyright holder would do is ask that they be taken down. The only time they will take more sever action is when the person in making a profit directly off them, i.e. putting them in a magazine that they sell, or putting them on a website and charging a membership fee. Anyway, get over and avoid these clearly labeled threads or leave. Your not going to lose this argument as Geoff would lose more members, and thus more ad revenue, by banning these threads. Most people opposed to them can live with the compromise of only allowing tame pics, links to nude pics, and no porn period. However, if you ban these things, people will get pissed over what would be censorship, and leave. I'm sure some members come here primarily for those threads. I don't view these threads very often, only when the are centered around one person I find attractive. I much prefer the serious threads that are few and far between. I just avoid the stuff I'm not interested in, and the stuff that offends me. If you can't do that, then just find another forum. Geoffs not going to make changes for only a couple of people. The only time he's changed anything in the past, i.e. add a new forum area, is when a ton of people support it.
