It was agreed last year this challenge implicitly includes silent films and what have been classed in the U.S. as "foreign language films." Talkies that aren't in English, in other words.

The first annual Indie/Art House Challenge evolved out of what was previously the Criterion Challenge. In this challenge, we emphasize exploration rather than a raw quantity of films viewed. We encourage you to take some time and dive into the films you watch. Check out any included supplemental materials. Look up reviews and essays. In other words, immerse yourself! SoÖ what exactly is an Art-House film? Itís a sort of ďYouíll know it when you see itĒ thing, but Wikipedia offers the following characterization:

Pre-Horror Participants
We welcome the horror enthusiasts among us who just canít wait until October. Think of this as a chance to emphasize Art-horror, and save the really schlocky stuff for next month. Youíll find a considerable amount of eligible content!

Distributor Safe List
To make selecting titles easier, any movie made available by the following distributors is classified as "safe" for this challenge, even if it should be a mainstream production. You are not required to watch their edition. You're not limited to these distributors, though, because there are plenty others who bring to us the kinds of films we're after. If you have any questions, ask in the discussion thread.Checklist (Optional, as always)
Spoiler:

The checklist is intended solely as a prompt for participants who want a template for organizing their viewing. It's general enough that you can still complete it even if you decide to stick to just Criterion content, or if you decide to commit fully to horror. Rules:
  • Silent films count for a foreign language IF the original language title cards are shown.
  • You may only use a film once per section. This includes viewings with commentaries, etc.

Re: 2023 Indie/Art House/Criterion Challenge - legacy number Year 15

Thanks for stepping up, Trevor! I've gotten caught up in all kinds of stuff and I lost track of this being around the corner. I'm currently working on a Ninety-Film 90s Daisy Chain Project (each movie shares an actor with the adjacent ones). I've still got 48 movies to go and they definitely won't all be eligible for this challenge, but I'll list whatever movies I get to that do. In hindsight, I wish I'd timed things a bit differently because I've already done, among others, Chambermaid on the Titanic; Rembrandt; My Life in Pink; the Three Colors trilogy, The Double Life of Veronique, and Cyrano de Bergerac.

Laurel & Hardy: Year One, The Newly Restored 1927 Silents just arrived, so I think I'll try this. Also hope to get through the Pasolini set I got a few months ago.

Re: 2023 Indie/Art House/Criterion Challenge - legacy number Year 15

After debating the last few days, I decided why not take part, so I started with a couple of movie last night. The second movie, Monty Python And The Holy Grail I had to break up into two sessions though. A friend of mine on Discord wanted to hold an impromptu movie night, Sorcerer. It was directed by, Friedkin, I believe. The director of the first Exorcist. Though it wasn't horror by any stretch of the imagination, rather an action noir kind of film. Didn't list that though because I didn't know if it was eligible for this challenge.

It 100% qualifies. Sorcerer is a remake of The Wages of Fear, which is in the Criterion Collection and Sorcerer is an arthouse film in itself.

Re: 2023 Indie/Art House/Criterion Challenge - legacy number Year 15

So, I'm a complete noob at this, and was thinking this has probably come up before. Independent films to me are films that are financed outside the major studios. I have a handful of those SOV Culture Shock blus, and I'm thinking these would probably count, but I wouldn't really consider these art house. Anyone want to clarify.

Re: 2023 Indie/Art House/Criterion Challenge - legacy number Year 15

We’re pretty loose around here, and no one will mind if you decide to count something. I’ve watched a few art house-y things and decided to put them on my list without counting them (Whiplash, Take This Waltz, Other Boleyn Girl).

I did count Departures, a 2009 Japanese film about a professional cellist who ends up finding a new career in preparing corpses for funeral/cremation. I gave it a try because of the musical angle, but that really wasn’t the emphasis, and I found it quite touching.
