I'm two movies into the William Grefé set and and enjoying them, so far. 60s Drive-in trash, as advertised. The audacity of the jellyfish monster in Sting of Death is worth the price of admission. Tartu is fun. Looking forward to the rest.

Yesterday, while scrolling through Roku TV's live channel, I came across a Victor Buono movie on Cinevault Classics. The Silencers had just signed on, so I thought it was perfect timing. It kind of reminded me of a Eurospy film, just in the type of vibe that I got from watching it.

The Silencers, if I'm remembering correctly, is the first of Dean Martin's Matt Helm movies. They're a curious mixture of serious/parody. He made three more, The Ambushers, Murderer's Row, and one title more I can't dredge up (and I'm not gonna look it up). The Matt Helm movies were slicker and certainly had more money thrown at them than the typical Eurospy movie, though they were certainly riding Bond's long tail as were others. One's that come close in quality, might be Deadlier Than the Male, Some Girls Do and perhaps Modesty Blaise. There's also Kiss the Girls and Make them Die (1966) with Mike 'Touch' Connors, Dorothy Provine and Terry-Thomas, which is closer in feel to a Eurospy, and I'm fond of it.

Watched Carry on Spying (1964) for the second time and it went down more smoothly this time. I appreciate that they play it as relatively straight spy (Bond) parody; for a Carry On movie. Always worth catching Bernard Cribbins.

Slowly working my way through the third Drive-in Delirium set, still have seven hours to go. I'm pretty sure I've sat through it at least two or three times, but there's a lot of trailer material that I don't remember seeing. Maybe I've only sat through it once. At 12 hours it's not a casual watch. It's not a chore to sit through exactly, but after a few hours (even separated by days) you do start feeling it. Still, it's fun and a good reminder of films to make note of for other challenges.

Finished the serial, The Whispering Shadow (1933), that I started in the previous Challenge. I had a sneaking suspicion about the identity of the antagonist, and I was right, it was "Keyser Söze". Makes you wonder just how far back this trope goes...

Dangerous Game: The Legacy Murders earned its 0% RT. Truly terrible combo of gross-out murders and Knives Out mystery. With Jon Voight and Jonathan Rhys-Myers.

Blade of the 47 Ronin (2022), a Samurai vs Ninja action fantasy, is a sequel to 47 Ronin (2013), which I did like. The sequel definitely isn't great, possible not even good (YMMV), but it has its moments and it grew on me. It also re-enforced the usefulness of faceless minions. The "same" dozen, maybe fewer, faceless ninja were killed countless times, but hey, faceless minions are cannon fodder, so that's the way it goes.

Is anyone counting Evil Dead Rise. I mean, it feels too big.. but it is part of a huge exploitation franchise.

I was perusing my collection for something to watch tonight and stumbled over Joe Dante's The Movie Orgy (1968), a compilation/mashup film. It looks like a fine way to wrap up the Challenge. It's about five hours long, so I'm splitting it into four about 75ish minute chunks. I'll finish off the Challenge with Grindhouse (2007), Saturday, barring a last minute change of heart. Three of the five fake trailers are now or will be actual movies (Eli Roth is working on Thanksgiving, for Thanksgiving 2023). So only two are left unmade, Werewolf Women of the SS and Don't.

I've been consuming an excessive amount of box sets, vanity projects and kung fu. I bowed out after only one Milligan flick (The Body Beneath) this go-around after dosing off one too many times. Same with Rebane and Monster a Go-Go. Probably the biggest surprise is how much I've enjoyed the Doris Wishman set(s) so far, although Steckler is my new favorite director set released since last challenge. The Frank Henenlotter commentaries on Wishman and Grefé are THE highlight. AGFA and Arrow made a mistake not including newly recorded tracks from him for every film.

I wish I were more excited for Thanksgiving, and probably would be if it were 10 or even 5 years ago. Times have changed, obviously. I just hope it retains the sleazy Grindhouse feel of the trailer.

While doing some random YouTube searches yesterday, I discovered that there are some MST3K movies on there. Yesterday I watched Gamera and I followed it up this morning with Gamera vs Barugon . I used to have the Gamera set of MST3K movies on DVD, but lost it many years ago in a move.

If there’s a naked shootout, it must be the exploitation challenge!

One was in a French revenge thriller called, um, Revenge (2018, mostly English). Unfortunately the naked shooter was a man, and the movie was fine, though also a bit ridiculous.

The other was in Cat Run 2, and both it and the original were full of beautiful naked eastern European women, goofy spy antics, and more. I got the discs from Netflix but foolishly had them queued out of order so I had to wait for the original to arrive before watching the sequel. As it turns out, they recast the lead anyway. Nothing I’d choose to watch again.

Also rewatching a “classic,” Rebecca DeMornay in the 1988 remake of And God Created Woman. Cheap trash, but only $4.99 for digital SD.

Thanks for hosting Caligula. I had family problems last month, so had trouble getting in movie watching moods, but still enjoyed what I watched.
