I hate that My Year of Dicks has been removed. I was really looking forward to watching that one.

Watched Triangle of Sadness with zero expectations. I expected to be a movie that wouldn't hold my interest... damn I was wrong.

I made sure to watch "My Year of Dicks" as soon as I saw Mao's post.

Today I spent the day in Ireland metaphorically speaking with "Belfast" and "The Banshees of Insherin." The latter was interesting though I'm not sure if I would have nominated it for 9 Oscars. Though I wouldn't vote for it above the other nominees I've seen, this feels like the type of film voters would go for. I've now seen three of the five Original Screenplay nominees from last year and "Belfast" was the least interesting of the three.

Yeah it was great. I have a feeling it will be one of the films talked about more after this season.

I’m annoyed that I was holding on The Woman King and Three Thousand Years of Longing in hopes that they might qualify. Maybe Longing works for the romance challenge.

I did kick things off with Banshees of Inershin. Funny but sad, and really good.

The Woman King got hosed. I would have thought that Viola Davis would have gotten a nom at the very least.

I'll request the List thread be pinned.

So, I just watched Blonde and wow was that a thoroughly unpleasant film to watch. Now I understand all the Razzie nominations.

Yeah, I really disliked Blonde.

I watched RRR (Best Original Song) last night, and that was crazy fun.

This is why film is art and art is subjective. I was fascinated by "Blonde" and felt she completely deserves her nomination.

My issue wasn't with de Armas - she did the best she could with the material and her performance was the only redeeming quality of the film for me. My problem is with the writing and the direction. I got the distinct feeling about 30 minutes into the film that Dominik did not like Marilyn Monroe. To be honest, I kinda got the feeling Dominik doesn't like women period. If he wanted to point how how Monroe was exploited by men throughout her life and career, there was a way to do that without exploiting her too. It was like the film was saying if only Monroe 1. had a father in the life 2. could have been a mom and 3. had just stopped complaining about wanting to me more than a sex symbol, she would have been fine. Literally everything about Monroe in the film traced to some dude and that's inaccurate. We won't even get into the massive inaccuracies. People bitched about The Woman King not being accurate and this movie has real life folks dying years before they actually did and making that death a big deal.

I agree that respecting a performance and enjoying a film aren’t the same thing.

Tricky part tho is that it’s not a biography but a film adaptation of a novel. I’m not familiar enough with either that or Monroe’s real life to judge any inaccuracies and where they’re from. I just thought the film was not enjoyable to watch.

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)

I just posted this on my Facebook feed but I thought I'd share it with this group. I'm listening to the commentary track for The Apartment and the speaker mentions that Billy Wilder was the first person to win Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Writing for the same film and that only 7 people have done that since. Of course, that made me wonder: who are the others.

1. Francis Ford Coppola - Godfather II
2. James L Brooks - Terms of Endearment
3. Peter Jackson - Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
4/5 Joel and Ethan Coen - No Country for Old Men
6. Alejandro Inarritu - Birdman
7. Bong Joon Ho - Parasite

Several other films won all three awards but different people took home the trophies. Just FYI.

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)

Unfortunately, my father passed away last week so I had to leave town and I missed an entire week of viewing time. Life gets in the way... Hopefully I can get back on track now. Watched Black Panther: Wakanda Forever last night on Disney+ to get back into the groove. Can't believe I waited so long to see this one. I've seen most Marvel movies in the theatre but this one got away from me for some reason. All Quiet... and Living are the last multi-nominees I have left to see.

Sorry to hear that pacaway , I pray that you and the rest of his family are coping with the loss as well as possible. Diving into viewing marathons has historically been a coping mechanism for me.

BTW, I saw Empire of Light just before I left and thought it was great! LOVED the setting! I wish there were still theatres like that around.

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)

I recently learned about Flashback Cinema. It's a nationwide "program celebrating classic movies on the big screen." Their website says movies are scheduled for Sundays and Wednesdays, but the participating theater in Louisville has them playing on Mondays and Tuesdays as well. All of this month's titles are eligible for this challenge:

Wed 2/8 - Pillow Talk (WINNER: Writing [Original Screenplay]; and four other nominations)
Sat 2/11; Sun 2/12; Wed 2/15 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (two nominations)
Sun 2/19/ & Wed 2/22 - Murder on the Orient Express (WINNER: Supporting Actress [Ingrid Bergman] and five other nominations)
Sun 2/26 & Wed 3/1 - My Fair Lady (WINNER: Actor [Rex Harrison]; Art Direction [Color]; Cinematography [Color]; Costume Design [Color]; Directing [George Cukor]; Music [Scoring]; Best Picture; and Sound; and four other nominations)
