= first time viewing

Movies rated out of 5 stars (*****) based solely on my personal enjoyment.

My Viewing List:
Spoiler:
September 30th (Dusk)
1. X (2022): Nice to see Ti West back in the horror genre (hard to believe that Sacrament was 9 years ago). I like his style and aesthetic, and I'm also a fan of 70s horror and old-school slashers ... so this was right up my alley. In retrospect I feel silly for not realizing right away that Mia Goth was playing a double role. Although Pearl's older photos (which were Mia Goth) and the fact that the old-age make-up was so grotesque should've been a clue. I'm certainly interested in the prequel Pearl. ****

2. The Beta Test (2021): Not much of a horror movie (the closest it got was the opening few minutes) ... more of a social-media/techno twist on Eyes Wide Shut. And it's a pretty interesting idea for a movie. However ... I think I'm done with Jim Cummings movies. He seems to play the same persona: an unbearably obnoxious asshole who I go through the entire movie seeing someone want to beat his ass (despite him being the protagonist). **1/2

3. The Feast (2021): A nice little low-key entry in the folk horror genre (in Welsh, no less). A slow-builder for sure, but the foreign setting and language made it interesting to me. And like the best movies of this style do, even when not much appears to be happening there are little clues and a gradual ramping up of tension and unease. My one quibble is that it feels like there's a key scene missing (where we actually hear about the supernatural mythology which is central to the story). ***1/2

October 1st
4. We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021): A fair title could also be ASMR: The Motion Picture. You know something's up when Rotten Tomatoes has this kind of difference between the critics and the audience:

It's the kind of movie that's arty, indie, and has its heart in the right place (looking at how lonely and unstable people can spiral out of control on the internet) ... so I don't think professional critics want to look bad and pan it. But for an audience, it's awfully dull. **

5. Sissy (2022): This was a nice pick-me-up from the previous movie: a fun, funny very modern-take on the slasher story. Not since Tucker and Dale vs Evil have I seen anyone pile up so high of an accidental body count. ****

6. Mad God (2021): Amazingly took 33 years of production to complete Literally a nightmare in movie form. I'm sure people could complain about the thin plot, but I think that's missing the point. And I like the little Easter eggs of Ray Harryhausen monsters scattered about. ****1/2

October 3rd
7. ☼ Tilbury (1987): While I don't think I'd call this movie "good", it was certainly something ... different. Never heard of it before, and I probably wouldn't have watched it if I wasn't a pick here (and I'm glad I did see it). I do have questions though. So the "Tilbury" is conjured ... and just shows up and gets to be a high ranking officer? Is this some kind of mind control magic? What's the endgame for the girl? A creature that steals milk sounds good in the middle ages. In 1940? Not so much. I guess she can start a chocolate business. But it can't be good for business if eating the chocolate makes you drool green and pass out. Maybe it was worth it to the girl to have a kick-ass dance partner? ***

October 5th
8. ☼ What We Do in the Shadows (2022): Season 4, eps 1-4

October 6th
9. Crimes of the Future (2022): I really wanted to like this. I'm a huge fan of Cronenberg, especially his "body horror" prime (Shivers through The Fly). But despite the grotesque imagery and the interesting ideas, this mostly bored me. **

10. Men (2022): Easily the least of Alex Garland's movies (the others being Ex Machina and Annihilation), but it has some things going for it. It looks great, and the leads do a really good job (and I feel silly that I didn't realize until the credits that Rory Kinnear played all the male characters in the village). It touches on folk horror/fantasy, straddles the line between what is real is what is imagined, has message beyond just the horror ... and the ending is just bonkers. ***

October 7th
11. Nope (2022): I think I enjoyed this the least of Peele's horror movies, but still certainly good and worthwhile. Interesting "monster" design, and Peele is certainly channeling his inner Spielberg (Close Encounters and Jaws especially). I think it pushed it's 135 minute running time, though there were striking scenes and images that will be sticking with me for a while. ***1/2

12. The Black Phone (2021): I was a little worried when I saw it was based on a short story (sometimes those movies just don't have enough story to justify the running time) and that it was mostly a couple of characters in a single room. But I thought this was a really effective and tense movie (and most "open" than I thought it would be). ****

13. Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022): A fun little movie, despite almost all of the characters being massively unlikable to me (though I think that was the point). I'm guessing they CGI'ed out Pete Davidson's tattoos (I wonder how much expense that ads to the budget, especially for a low-budget movie like this one). The end reveal with Pete Davidson's character made me ***1/2

October 8th
14. The Sadness (2021): Yeah, this was as unpleasant as I thought it would be. Though I think having the gore be so over-the-top makes it easier to watch than if it was done more realistically. Well made and attention-keeping though. ***

15. Werewolf by Night (2022): I needed a palate-cleanser after that, and this did just perfectly. I love the old-school Universal horror look, and it was surprisingly violent for something on Disney+. A rare movie where I wished it was a lot longer. ****

16. The Cursed (2021): I love Victorian-England gothic horror movies, like the sort Hammer used to do a lot of. This reminder me of those, and it did enough of a variation of the familiar werewolf story to keep it interesting. ****

October 9th
17. Morbius (2022): One day later (as I'm writing this) and already I'm finding this movie leaving my mind. Not outright awful ... there are some good actors here (Leto, Smith, Harris). But this is about as bad as CGI-fest action gets. And while I'm not one of those who thinks all movies need to be a hard R ... in order to be good, this one really needed it. When the whole point of the movie is blood and the movie goes to extremes not to show it, it just feels awkward and lame. **

18. The Munsters (2022): This was more enjoyable than I was expecting. I guess your mileage depends on your tolerance for corny jokes, garish visuals ... and if you have any affection for the original series. And Zombie clearly loves the 60s tv show ... this is essentially a prequel "origin" story that is right in line with the show and leads right into it. ***

October 10th
19. Broadcast Signal Intrusion (2021): I liked the setting (90s at the very beginning of the internet), and the vibe reminded me of Videodrome (minus the ick). I just wish it went somewhere. **1/2

20. Saloum (2021): I don't think I've seen a movie from Senegal before. While obviously low budget, it was pretty cool: interesting cast of characters, beautiful African locale, and it delved into African mysticism in a way that felt fresh. Oddly, the horror aspects of the movie were the weakest and underdeveloped. I think this would've been a better movie without that: just a straight action-thriller-drama about a band of mercenaries staying in a vacation/commune camp, with the leader of the mercenaries having an old score to settle with the commune leader. ***1/2

21. My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell It To (2020): Sad but very well done. But while the names evade me at the moment, I'm pretty sure I've seen at least a couple of movies with this same general concept and style: an arthouse indie drama about a family trying to get by when one of them has a vampire-like illness. ***1/2

October 12th
22. Winterbeast (1992): This is the kind of movie I really could’ve used the company of wisecracking robots to get through. I see that this is the only movie in the filmography of most of the cast and crew. I’m shocked … shocked I tell you! Some unintentionally funny parts, but pretty boring in a lot of others. *1/2

October 13th
23. The Velvet Vampire (1971): Probably not a good idea to watch this when tired, since it had a languid pace, dreamy atmosphere, and mellow musical score. Not as good as the many European erotic female vampire movies that came out around this time. But there were still some good points. The desert setting is different for a vampire movie. The two women are hot and get naked frequently. And it had a memorably weird ending. **1/2

24. Watcher (2022): Solid giallo-like thriller that was unfortunately somewhat ruined for me by a crappy Shudder experience (it just crashed the middle of the movie, I tried everything I could think of and the app never worked, and I had to give up and watch the rest on a computer screen ). I've seen a lot of movies shot in Romania but they pretend it's somewhere else. But not sure many modern-setting movies I've seen actually take place in Romania. I could sympathize with all of those scenes where Julia and her husband are speaking to people ... and even though they can all speak English and know Julia's Romanian is very poor, they just keep yakking it up and having a great time in Romanian. Really rude and I've had it done to me. ***1/2

25. Halloween Ends (2022): Thank god it's over! Maybe this wouldn't have been a bad story in the middle of the franchise run (or better yet, something not tied into the Halloween series at all), trying to give it new juice. But for what it supposed to be the final movie in the series ... just can't have Michael Myers be a bit player (and kind of a pathetic one at that). **

26. Hellraiser (2022): It ran too long, and didn't bring that much new to the franchise ... although the idea of what you're trying to solve with the puzzle box, taking it through different configurations to get a "wish" from the Cenobites, was something I don't remember seeing before. Still, probably the 3rd best in the series (after the first two). ***

27. Dark Glasses (2022): If not a return to form, it's a return to Argento's movies not sucking. A decent-enough thriller though it felt really cheap, and lacking much of the style you associate with Argento's best. The relationship between the main character call girl and the Chinese orphan was cute, and gave the movie a nice emotional heart. **1/2

October 15th
28. Glorious (2022): Without a doubt, the best cosmic horror movie about a god in a rest stop bathroom glory hole I have ever seen! Did even recognize True Blood's Ryan Kwanten in this (or realize JK Simmons was the voice of "god", even though his voice is pretty distinctive). Normally these "small number of characters in a single room" movies bore me, but this kept my interest throughout. ****

29. Speak No Evil (2022): Well made, but I really need to stop watching these bleak depressing horror-dramas since they just make me feel like shit (and I'm at a point in my life where I just don't need that from my "entertainment"). I saw the twist coming a mile away ... although how much of a twist can it be when you know this is turning into a horror movie. **1/2

30. Offseason (2021): I've seen a few of director/writer Mickey Keating's movies, and he's certainly someone to keep an eye on (especially given how young he still is). This has a cool Lovecraftian vibe (and also seems to take inspiration from Messiah of Evil). While it didn't offer any surprises, it was a fun spooky little ride. ***

October 17th
31. ☼ What We Do in the Shadows (2022): Season 4, eps 5-7

32. Village of the Damned (1960): The pacing of some of these older movies is crazy. Just a shade over 75 minutes long, and has you wishing there was more (and leaves the origin of the "children" vague, though it's not hard to guess what was going on). Still some of the creepiest horror movie children of all-time. ****

October 18th
33. Children of the Damned (1964): Not really a sequel, even though it features super-powered children with glowing eyes. And not nearly as interesting or frightening as the earlier movie. **1/2

October 19th
34. The Hunger (1983): A style-over-substance movie to be sure ... but what great style. Tony Scott may not have gotten the acclaim that his brother did, but he made some slick and fun movies. Something that still creeps me out about this movie is the fate of Miriam's lovers ... which has got to be one of the most horrible things that can happen to a person (aging to a withered husk, but not dying and spending eternity like that). ***1/2

October 20th
35. ☼ What We Do in the Shadows (2022): Season 4, eps 8-10

36. Child's Play (1988): Still a fun taut little thriller. Slashers were on the downturn in the late 80s, but this breathed a little life back into the genre. ****

37. Child's Play 2 (1990): More of the same, but still fun and interesting. You can see who they really start laying into the comedy more. Loved the big showdown in the toy factory, which made it feel like a real finale. ***1/2

October 21st
38. ☼ Child's Play 3 (1991): I don't remember seeing this before. Word of mouth was pretty bad and the military setting didn't look like it fit with the series. And this was a pretty lackluster movie, and it's easy to see why there was such a long gap to the next one (Bride of Chucky). Cool finale in the carnival ... though the haunted house ride made no sense (like the Tardis, the inside of the ride looked bigger than the entire carnival). **1/2

39. ☼ Orphan: First Kill (2022): The premise didn't sound particularly interesting, since the first movie set up that Esther kills everyone in the first family. But there's a twist that makes Esther almost an anti-hero. And she's a fun character, and it was interesting see how they made the actress (now an adult) look like she did in the first one (especially without any CGI). ***

40. ☼ Resurrection (2022): I'm not sure if I liked this or not Rebecca Hall really gives a tour-de-force performance. And it's rare that I have no idea where a movie is going right up until the end. ***1/2

October 22nd
41. ☼ Deadstream (2022): By no means a new concept ... I think I saw a couple of "social media streaming in a haunted house" movies just last year. But it was fun and energetic, and brought more of an Evil Dead 2 vibe than those movies (and really leaned into the comedy). ***1/2

42. ☼ V/H/S/99 (2022): Like all of the V/H/S compilations, a mixed bad (and I'll probably have forgotten most of it in a week). But the stories go by so fast ... and I noticed the last segment (featuring a literal trip to hell) was by the director of Deadstream. ***

October 26th
43. ☼ Barbarian (2022): I hadn't been following release news, so a nice surprise to log into HBO Max and see this at the top. Fortunately I was able to be kept in the dark about this. And the movie has fun with toss out red herrings about where the horror is going to come from. ****

October 27th
44. Lord of Illusions (1995): It's been ages since I've seen this ... probably not since it was a new release in Blockbuster Video in the 90s. That probably wasn't the director's cut, which sounds like it strengthened the movie. Like much of his work, Barker has imagination and ambition in bounds. Though it can be a struggle showing in movie form convincingly what he can write in a story. I liked Bakula and Janssen as the leads. I didn't find O'Connor convincing as this supposedly charismatic master illusionist. And Nix just looked so schlubby to be threatening in the beginning (although him in "monster" make-up at the end was good). Hard to believe this was the last movie Barker directed. ***1/2

45. ☼ Terrifier (2016): I didn't bother with this when it was new (and never saw All Hallow's Eve). But all the buzz about Terrifier 2 had me wanting to check it out. I don't know ... Art the Clown is certainly a fantastic monster villain. Not just the look, but all the little mannerisms the actor brings to the character (and it's not surprise to hear he has a background in mime). And the practical effects are convincing, especially for what must have been a micro-budget. But the movie itself is ugly and mean-spirited, and felt repetitive even in it's brief 85 minute running time. I'm not sure how I could handle 2 and a half hours of this in a sequel (though by all accounts it's a better movie in every way). **

October 28th
46. ☼ Skeleton of Mrs. Morales (1960): More of a crime/black comedy than a horror movie (in fact, I wouldn't even consider it a horror movie at all). I was surprised how subversive it was, considering the year and country. Dr. Morales is one of the most sympathetic murderers I've seen in a movie. ***1/2

47. You Won't Be Alone (2022): A beautiful and moving movie that is mis-characterized as a horror movie. Sure, there are witches, shape-shifters, and gory killings. But it's really a philosophical art-house drama. And I don't think I've seen a movie in the Macedonian language before. ****

48. Terrifier 2 (2022): Thankfully what I heard was true ... better in every aspect than the first movie (though this still should've been edited down at least to under 2 hours). Building up the main heroine, the giving the audience some catharsis over the sadistic killer, makes a huge difference. Also, this has more of a sense of fun than the first movie (and evokes more of an 80s slasher vibe instead of the grimy torture-porn vibe from the first movie). Though I can still do without the extended mean-spirited torture killings (and if you've seen this, you know what scene is the main offender). ***

October 29th
49. Alligator (1980): Just a fun popcorn monster movie, with an interesting cast of character actors, and a funny script (by John Sayles). ***1/2

50. It's Alive (1974): Despite the ridiculous premise, the movie plays it very straight. And unlike the previous movie I watched, has a grim and glum tone. I'm surprised how quickly the police and media get on board with the fact that a mutant baby is running (crawling?) around killing people. ***

51. Scream (2022): Well made and easy to watch. But just feels like the same movie we've seen before in earlier Scream installments. ***

52. ☼ Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022): "Lot 36" and "Graveyard Rats"

53. Hellbender (2021): One of the more watchable micro-budget horror movies I've seen, and the home-computer level effects kind of work in giving it a trippy feel. It's cool that this was literally a family project of doing something during the COVID shut-down (with pretty much everything in front of and behind the camera being the work of a married couple and their two daughters). ***1/2

October 30th
54. It! (1967): Another movie I remember fondly from childhood tv (when monster movies were the thing on Saturday afternoons and weekend late-night). And this is pretty solid ... Hammer-style Norman Bates controls The Golem is a great concept, and Roddy McDowell is fun. It does do a bit too much "telling, not showing" (including inexcusably having a scene where McDowell and his monster attacks and kidnaps his love interest not even being shown). Another movie where the authorities are quick to believe that there's a supernatural monster on the loose ... and they have the most extreme plan to deal with it that I've ever seen. ***

55. Pearl (2022): Great looking ... I've seen lots of 70s and 80s throwback styles for horror movies, but don't remember one that evokes the technicolor Golden Age of Hollywood. Though it (probably unavoidably) suffers from knowing exactly where the movie is going. ***1/2

Halloween
56. Two on a Guillotine (1965): Sucks to end on a movie I didn't particularly enjoy, but thems the breaks. I was surprised I somehow missed an interesting-sounding major studio horror movie from the 60s, though it sounds like it was "missing" for a long time after the theatrical run. As it turns out, it wasn't much of a horror movie ... more like 90% romantic comedy. I'm sure on that level it was a perfectly fine movie, but when you're given something massively different than what you were expecting it can hard not to feel let down. Good score by Max Steiner though (one of his last). **1/2
