I'm fond of Ghosts of Mars (2001), too, but it is Carpenter remaking Rio Bravo (1959) or El Dorado (1966), or Rio Lobo (1970) (take your pick), again. There must be something archetypical about the movies' situation.

Just FYI Kino started their Shocktober sale, and you can pick up one of this month's subset picks Deep Rising on Blu-Ray for $9.99

I remember being very pleasantly surprised by Ghosts of Mars; it's a cool far out premise that takes some risks even if it is formulaic in ways. We need more unabashedly gusty sci fi horror films that are not afraid to risk being a little cheesy.

Also planning on grabbing Cannibal Apocalypse to check the Antonio Margheriti box on the checklist.

I actually think it's OK, just bland. I'd love Netflix or someone to dump a truck full of money at Carpenter's feet, give him like a $20M budget, and let him make one more movie with Kurt or even Wyatt Russell. Let him go out on something a little more personal, even if it isn't good/great.

He’s got something new coming. There was a cryptic post on his Instagram of him sitting down in a movie theater, preparing to watch something.
I highly doubt it’s a directorial effort though. Probably music or a podcast. Some of the hashtags were Godzilla and Toho related.

Yeah, all the dates are in order. I just forgot to put the proper placement on that list, but it's now updated.

Thank you much sir, I am perhaps overly wary as one year I set up a basic schedule to the unsorted list.

I watched my selected film. When the lists came out, I said "please no Hausu " to myself. I just remember not caring for it so much the first time i seen it. I'll say, on a second viewing... it is better. Maybe I was in a better viewing situation and catching more this time. It is still very wonky and discombobulated... but I think that is more intentional and planned to help with the distorted viewpoint. I'd go 6/10

Disney+ has an Halloween section as of today. Took a look and it's solid and yet half-assed effort.

Movies and Series -- They've got more than they're showing; I don't know if they're going to add stuff in or not. The tv stuff is probably more interesting than the movie selections.

Shorts and Specials - The usual Disney shorts, Trick or Treat (1952), etc..., and a smattering of Disney Channel specials.

The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror -- All of the specials probably (no, I didn't count). Binge'em or cherry pick, this one is pretty good

Haunting Episodes -- Halloween episodes of shows Disney+ has made and acquired.

Disney Channel Halloween Episodes -- This one's more interesting, possibly. About 3/4's live and 1/4 animated. A few deepcuts. I can't believe they went with "The Terror of the Terra-firmians!" over "The Trickening!" (Ducktales).

Still alive thanks! Did have a recent health scare. In a 24 hour span I learned I had skin cancer and heart disease. But good news on both fronts thank God. The skin cancer is the Ďeasyí kind, should just be an easy procedure to remove it. Wear sunscreen everyone! And the heart disease is somewhat mild, hopefully caught it in time to change my diet and avoid a heart attack. Eat well and exercise everyone! It will keep us alive for more of these Challenges!

So with that and other OCD hobbies, I havenít been making enough time for DVDTalk. But Iím still doing my monthly checklists and checking in occasionally. Very excited for October! Chad and the rest of you have done the usual amazing job in getting things ready, and then some. Looking so good!

Appreciate the rundown!

They do have some more new content coming. (I'm looking forward to Hocus Pocus 2 and Werewolf by Night, and I've been subjected to approximately 8 million ads for Under Wraps 2 in my mobile game.) But I agree, they definitely have more movies and series -- including stuff, I'm sure, that's already streaming on D+ -- that they could've curated for this collection.

Oh dude! Under Wraps 2?! I loved the original when I was a kid. That and Dracula 1992 definitely laid the foundations for my interest in horror. Of course, the Disney Channel was new (for us) and every original movie they developed felt like a big deal at the time. If I recall correctly, Under Wraps was the first "Disney Channel Original Movie", although maybe it was Suzie Q?

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

It's time to strap in and start getting excited. One week from tonight the Challenge finally starts. I've been preparing for three months, I say it's time to start now, but I have to control myself one more week. I hope everyone is as excited as I am! And another thanks for the September roulette movie even if I was one of the lucky ones to get a "bullet". It was a great idea and I am definitely in for it again next year! Thanks for the idea and the work IBJoel!

I just finished the pick assigned to me -- Dawn of the Dead.

I had seen it one time before, way back in 2009. In fact, it was a subset film chosen causing me to see it. A funny note -- I went back to find the thread and discussion about the film and the search brought up a Gilligan's Island thread! (Dawn Wells - Dead at 82)

Also of interest, my comments in that thread were similar to the experience now, indicating that I enjoyed the scenes from the mall the best.

I own the disc, but since IBJoel had mentioend it being on YouTube, I just pulled it up there. There were several different options as I recall and I chose one labeled "extended cut". However, there was another with a longer runtime? How many cuts are there?

Three official and there’s a fan edit called Extended Mall Hours.
My preferred cut is the extended/Cannes cut. I’m glad to finally have it on UHD.
The fan edit is cool to watch once or twice. It’s got a lot of extra footage.

R.I.P. Louise Fletcher.

Added to the recently deceased list with 14 entries.

You are correct, sir. But fair warning, UW2 is a sequel to the remake that came out last year(?), not to the original '90s one. I'm sure it's... fine, just maybe not the nostalgia hit you might be looking for. Still, maybe they'll be successful in priming a new generation of horror fans.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

I can't believe we are (finally!) less than a week out. I'm about 95% done with getting the streaming copies of the subset films ready to go -- still have to pull all the links together in a doc, finish locating and attaching subtitles, and do final checks of all the files. And there are a few more extras I might try to get uploaded.

Like last year, if you're interested, please PM or email me and I will send you a link (after I finish the last 5% of prep work). I'll keep my eye out for requests throughout the month, but you're definitely more likely to get a timely response from me before the challenge starts than during -- so if you think you might want a link to one or more of the movies, better to plan ahead and ask now.

I too was assigned Troll 2 for IBJoel ’s giveaway contest. Have long been a fan of it, and it served as a nice break from my Criterion viewings this month. I couldn’t find my disc version(s) of the film, so watched the HD cut on Pluto. I hope I find my set and Best Worst Movie disc before October is over, although I do agree with numbercrunch that multiple viewings in a short time span will have diminishing returns. My wife laughed with me at some of the awful acting and dialogue, and was concerned about the mental health of a person who would assign such a viewing ;P
