First year the kiddo topped off the traditional plastic pumpkin bucket trick or treating. Annoying though that I always have to throw away religious junk that gets snuck in her bucket. Should hit 105 before bed and then I really got to get my reviews caught up over the next few days.

Always bittersweet the end of the Horror challenge, and it seems like you never get as much watched as you planned.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

I'm done. Got my 71st in with Out There Halloween Mega Tape (2022). It nailed the era's tone. You'll definitely get more out of it if you've watched the WNUF Halloween Special (2013) first.

Wendel and Wild (2022) mostly lived up to my hopes. Perhaps not the instant classic that Coraline (2009) was, but it's still plenty good, with a great soundtrack. Have to see how it ages.

Got in my yearly viewing of The Angry Beavers, "The Day the World Got Really Screwed Up", in yesterday, since watching the episode on the 30th is de riguer. The episode is a love letter to Halloween and 50's sci-fi B-movies. Watched Ducktales, "The Trickening", tonight. It's a great episode, packed with horror movie references. Also managed to squeeze in the short, Ward 13 (2003). A little Lovecraft, a touch of body horror and a healthy dash good old fashioned violence. What's not to like? A hi-def version is available on youtube.

Finished at 35. As is the case every year, I wish that I had more time to do more. Work took up most of my weekday time. But I did what I could. Maybe one of these times I'll be free to do a large list. But not anytime soon. Thanks again for making this an enjoyable time.

For the first time, I joined the 100 views club (103). I never expected to hit 100 and didn't set out to do it. Even without that milestone, I think this was the most enjoyable challenge yet. Big thanks to Chad for running a top shelf challenge and to everyone who helped me find content to watch.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Good number of kids came by last night. My wife got 2 huge bags of candy, and we gave out about 1/2 of one bag. The sky opened up and dumped a good bit of rain on those kids that were out, but it only lasted about 2 minutes. I just put a bowl out and let them have at it until we closed up shop ~8:30.

I ended up with 103 watches for the month, and I am really tired now. Plan on finishing up Andor, and then start The Watcher on Netflix.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Finished at 129. My personal best was 133 in 2018, but this was my second best. I was fortunate to be able to take most of October off work after a crazy busy year. I watched 32 subset films, watched movies that fit the theme every night, and completed the checklist.
I had 94 first time views.

My top first-time watches:
The new INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE series. I adore it.
MEN (2022)
MR. HARRIGAN'S PHONE (2022)
HOCUS POCUS 2 (2022) - for the nostalgia and Bette Midler
WEREWOLF BY NIGHT (2022)
THE SORCERERS (1967)
SLASH/BACK (2022)
THE DAMNED (1962)
DUMPLINGS (2004)

BARBARIAN (2022)
THE SKIN I LIVE IN (2011)

NOPE (2022)

Least enjoyed:
HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES (2003)
TILBURY (1987)
WINTERBEAST (1992)
MAN BITES DOG (1992)
CLIMAX (2018)

CALVAIRE (2004)
INLAND EMPIRE (2006)
CLOSE CALL (2017)

I'm done editing my list.

Thanks to CHAD especially, but also everyone who participates, for another fun year!

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Ended fittingly on Halloween Ends (which I rather enjoyed), for a total of 29 new watches and I think 5 repeat watches (I don't keep track of those in Letterboxed). I had an additional first-time horror watches in September.

For the Checklist for anyone interested:

A film which truly justifies the term “unclassifiable,” WINTERBEAST was shot on and off for nearly half a decade and with a mix of super 8mm and 16mm, resulting in a one of a kind piece of outsider art-horror filmmaking that must be seen to be believed

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

My list is done at 56, with 47 first time views. I've done it several times before, but was never going for 100 this year. Wanted to take it a little easier, doing other things with my free time like gaming (finishing a couple of games this month), reading (finished 4 books and I'm 75% through another), and sports (with my hometown Phillies making a most unexpected playoff run).

I am a little bummed that I didn't finish on a movie I particularly enjoyed: 1965's Two on a Guillotine, which I had never seen and was shown on TCM. It wasn't a bad movie, but it was nowhere close to being the horror movie that the synopsis blurb suggested: "The daughter of a psychotic magician must stay in his mansion for seven nights in order to inherit his fortune". This looks to have been a major studio film too, with 3 "name" stars for the 60s. Although Connie Stevens, Dean Jones, and Cesar Romero don't sound like they belong in a horror movie. Romero actually does well with limited screen time (as the "psychotic magician") and brings gravitas to the movie. But Stevens and Jones act like they're in a fluff romantic comedy for most of the running time. It was cool to hear one of the last scores by the legendary Max Steiner.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

According to Letterboxd, I tagged 114 movies as watched during the challenge. I just have to find the time to sit down and actually log everything, update, and then finalize my list. This was the first year that my son actually joined in and watched everything with me. I really enjoyed introducing him to stuff that was new to both of us, as well as titles that I've been a fan of but he hadn't seen yet. It was a good time and something we have to do again.

So true!

My list is complete. I finished the challenge with 131 entries (best yet!), 81 FTVs, subset completed, theme nights completed, and checklist completed with no duplicates. Somehow I managed to find a checklist entry for all my viewings too.

The Cabin in the Woods, So. Much. Fun!

Warlock Moon, felt like it was missing something but was enjoyable
Cult of Chucky, Andy seemed like an afterthought

Honorable mentions
Last Night in Soho, looking forward to the extras on Blu-ray

Killer Klowns from Outer Space, so weird, truly in a horror of its own!

Thanks Chad and everyone for another fun year!

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

I had 93 entries, mostly movies, but a couple TV series and other miscellaneous stuff.

Only needed 4 more movies to complete my (slightly personalized) check-list.

Out of the 72 feature films, 45 were first time watches.

Most viewed director happened to be Dan Curtis, with three films: House Of Dark Shadows, Night Of Dark Shadows, and Burnt Offerings.

My viewing was distributed across the decades:
1930s: 5 films
1940s: 4 films
1950s: 2 films
1960s: 9 films
1970s: 16 films
1980s: 13 films
1990s: 4 films
2000s: 3 films
2010s: 3 films
2020s: 10 films

I saw four films theatrically, all first-time viewings: Smile, Halloween Kills, Coraline, Psycho Goreman

My favorite new things:
WNUF Halloween Special. Thanks so much to those who recommended it. Not only is it unique, but it plays right into my interest in 1980s commercials and local broadcast.
Psycho Goreman is another I'm happy to have stumbled across.
Spirits Of The Dead. I could take or leave the first two stories in this anthology film, but the final segment by Federico Fellini is outstanding, as far as I know the only time he's done a "horror" film. I'm sure it comes as no surprise his dream visuals work perfectly in a creepy story, I've never seen them so sinister. It's like a darker version of his most famous film, 8 1/2, with Terence Stamp looking like a vampiric Rutger Hauer.

Favorite re-watch was Creepshow. Right now, I consider that the ultimate Halloween movie, beautifully coloured, captures the horror comics perfectly, a great balance between humour and the macabre. I like it more now than I did just a few years ago.

Biggest surprise might be The Hills Have Eyes Part II, which I'd been led to believe was basically unwatchable due to over-use of flashbacks from the original film, but I thought it was fine, no worse than your average 1980s horror film. The dirt bikes give it something unique. I'd rather have to watch this again than certain other Wes Craven movies like Deadly Blessing.

It's been fun, thanks to everyone for keeping me company with their lists and discussions. Pretty shitty Halloween for me this year, not only did it fall on a Monday but it was rainy. Hope you all had a better one.

Savor that.

My son watched most of the horror movies I have been watching over the last several years since he was probably 12 or 13. He went to college this year 9 hours away. I missed him greatly during this month and this year's challenge.

I visited him in the middle of this month, and we went to see Halloween Ends together and also went to the Universal Halloween Horror Nights since he is at school in Orlando. That was a blast but still would have loved him to have been around to watch and discover some cool movies this month.

To the two of you who watched with your son--that's so great. They will always remember that. My step-daughter never liked horror, and she's grown and lives away now. But my husband has been a pretty good sport about watching with me. This year I usually watched one earlier in the day by myself that I knew he'd hate and tried to pick a few for the evenings I thought he could tolerate. He likes the older stuff and the more mystery/thriller stuff. I only once heard the "You know, watching this stuff has to have a negative effect on your psyche" lecture, which I get when a film really disgusts or upsets him. So I count that as a win.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Got my list completed.

Final Tally:102 entries
Movies:84
TV Shows/Extras: 46 episodes/extras totaling 18 entries
Soundtracks/Various Horror Music Specials:37
Podcasts:17
Halloween themed events: 3
First time viewings for movies:52 (62%)
Decades for movies: 1910s - 0 (0%); 20s - 1 (1%); 30s - 0 (0%); 40s - 3 (4%); 50s - 1 (1%); 60s - 5 (6%); 70s - 6 (7%); 80s - 10 (12%); 90s - 8 (10%); 2000s - 16 (19%); 10s - 17 (20%); 20s - 17 (20%)
Formats: DVD - 6 (7%); Blu-ray - 39 (47%); UHD - 1 (1%); Streaming - 37 (44%); Theatrical - 1 (1%)
Challenges completed:No idea

Can't believe I hit 100 total. I didn't really try but just tried to eke out watching something whenever I could. It helped that I didn't make it have to be in my home theater every time. I actually streamed a few movies on my tablet while traveling which is something I don't do too often due to sound quality and picture quality. But a good pair of headphones and a nice, large tablet are surprisingly effective nowadays. But fuck watching a movie on my phone. I still refuse to do that...for now.

Did you see the "lost" ending that was originally shown to test audiences? The general audience and the studio execs didn't like it, and it was thought lost until a low-quality copy was discovered about 10 years ago. It's really creepy and disturbing (showing you what a future world where humans are subjugated by the ants might look like:

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 18th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

My list is complete, I've still got to go through it and mark down all the movies by decade.

I hit 180, which is a new record with 138 FTVs. Thinking about a career change so this will likely be the last year I can go hog wild, for a while, and I really wanted to set a new personal best.

Yes! I found the clip after watching the film. Very trippy like the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I'm glad Phase IV lived up the acclaim.
