Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 17th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)
Congrats rbrown498!
I hit 74 last night. I admit, I'm getting a little burnt. I feel like I'm reviewing things poorly just because I've watched so much horror that I'm getting tired of things easily.
Last night we finished with Dracula: Dead and Loving It for a palette cleanser. It worked for that purpose and had some amusing moments. Paul MacNicol was amazing as Renfield. But overall it wasn't nearly as funny as other Mel Brooks movies.
This is a marathon! Girding my loins for the 26 movies still to go. One thing is, a lot of the movies I've watched this challenge were selected to complete the 200s-400s on the They Shoot Zombies lists, and they were things I'd been avoiding like hardcore stuff (Frontiere, Hostel) or silent films, which aren't really my bag, or Rob Zombie stuff. So I think I will need to switch to some lighter things I know I'll like. Maybe old Tales from the Crypt episodes or something.

So far, I'm liking Fear Street a lot (I watched the first two movies over the weekend). I was too old for the YA books when they came out. Despite having young characters, the movies are most certainly not YA fare (high levels of gore).
I just started watching Brand New Cherry Flavor on Netflix. It's a limited series (8 45 minute episodes) so I'll see it through. It's interesting and fun so far, although the general story is a familiar one (someone using black magic to get ahead in entertainment business). Although a witch accepting payment in the form of kittens is something new to me
How is Midnight Mass? I like Mike Flanagan's work, although his style is generally the slow-moving slow burn that I'm less in the mood for.
I hear Abob Teff highly recommends She Dies Tomorrow!

Like most things when it comes to the arts, the 1970s were an amazing period for creativity when it comes to horror. The best flicks of the 100 years of horror chronologically thus far:
51. Crescendo (1970)*
52. A Bay of Blood (1971)*
53. Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972)*
54. Scream Blacula Scream (1973)*
55. Corpse Eaters (1974)*
56. Race With the Devil (1975)*
57. Crypt of Dark Secrets (1976)*
58. The Car (1977)*
59. Someone's Watching Me (1978)*
60. Fascination (1979)*
Highlights, and in the category of how have I not seen this yet:
Race With the Devil
The Car
and a John Carpenter flick I'd never heard of called Someone's Watching Me

I started out at a good pace, but got caught up with sports lately, so I’ve slowed way down. I’m not even at 40 yet, so I rather doubt I can hit 100. I do plan to pick up the pace on the rest of the month though.

I’m doing pretty well with my ‘relaxed pace’ this year. Goal is three films a day, all theme compliant.
- the subset choice
- another theme choice
- a choice specifically to fulfill something on the official or my personal checklists

I loved Midnight Mass. It has definitely been one of my favorite first-time viewings this month.
My big accomplishment for the month so far is watching all six Paranormal Activity movies. I had only previously seen the first three. Overall, I liked the sequels. I think what I might have appreciated the most is how all of the movies are linked and make sense together. I watched the last one, Ghost Dimension, in 3d. While most of it is fairly flat, I thought it had some great 3d elements that actually helped me get more into the story. I wish they had pushed that more but understand why it wasn't. I also fully understand why some people really hate these movies. I will say that the pace of these films does seem to quicken as the entries go on. The first few films are pretty darn slow. Also, in case some of you didn't know, the seventh film will premiere on Paramount+ on Oct. 29. I hear it's more of a reboot.

So I'm doing pretty shitty.
I've only watched Halloween (1978) and Halloween Kills (which except for the ending, I really liked). I've missed both Trivia Contests as well. I'm here for the third one, but I don't really like any folk horror films that I can think of, so I'm probably out of that one as well.
I've been spending most of the month tweaking my yard haunt (https://www.facebook.com/spooktacularspooktacular), and putting together my "Halloween radio show" on Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/ALLMIXEDUP2021). We also went to Cedar Point Hall-O-Weekends this past weekend so i guess this month hasn't been a total bust.

After hitting my goal of 31 recently, I've taken a little bit of time away from watching anything.
I've been swamped by the amount of weekly & monthly report writing at the new school I teach for, so at the end of the day I barely have enough energy to do normal things.
Hopefully I'll have the energy to watch a few more films or TV shows before the Challenge ends.

So, regarding Squid Games.. My nephew who is ~10, was talking about the show, which I have not seen. He kept asking me if I ever had nightmares. He would speed through some Squid Games thought, and then ask, ‘Do you have nightmares?’ This just kind of answered in my mind if it was horror or not. Actually looking forward to watching it after the challenge.

As has become tradition, I've hit my mid-month downturn. Work, stress, and work-related stress have been catching up to me. Thankfully, I've only got two shifts left between now and Halloween. I most likely won't hit 100, but I'm definitely gonna try!

I am going through a lot of the Universal Monster Movies and revisited The Invisible Man (1933) the other day. Damn, it is good. Perfect mix of humor and horror and doesn't come across as hokey as you might think (though I really would like to beat the screaming old lady senseless in the first third). Claude Rains is freaking awesome. I wish I had his voice and accent.
Other revisits such as Dracula's Daughter (1936) have not faired as well.

I should hit 100 tomorrow, then it’s only 38 more to my goal. I’m really glad I’m watching so much new stuff this time.

I think I'll end up hitting 100, but it will be a bit of a slog. It's certainly not like working from home! I'm hoping to maybe take some time off next week, but we're short staffed. It might not be that easy. We'll see. More than anything, I need to get through this week. A lot of work and I'm hitting a bit of a wall.

I watched Frankenstein earlier this month, followed by the audio commentary the next day, as well as She Wolf Of London. Sad thing about She Wolf is I bought a digital copy on iTunes to watch it for the theme day, because at the time I couldn’t locate my Wolf Man Legacy Collection. Later in the month, I found the set had just slipped out of my DVD box and was on the floor between it and a dresser.

Caught Sputnik on Hulu and loved it. They filmed it in old ussr buildings and the bleakness is everywhere.

In order to fulfill the subset tonight, do we need to watch BOTH Daughters of Darkness and Wilding or just one? I have seen both but I will watch one again.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 17th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)
Thanks Trevor and J...it's been interesting for sure doing the challenge this way. A few years were tough only because I am choosing only to do flicks I haven't seen and I don't plan. I search flicks released that year and choose one right before I watch it and don't look ahead. It's made for some interesting choices, especially for this recent batch of the 80s. A few years back I did the challenge ONLY watching flicks from the 80s so this time I really had to think what I hadn't covered.
61. The Watcher in the Woods (1980)*
62. Night School (1981)*
63. Unhinged (1982)*
64. The Deadly Spawn (1983)*
65. Invitation to Hell (1984)*
66(6). Making Contact (1985)*
67. Neon Maniacs (1986)*
68. My Best Friend Is a Vampire (1987)*
69. The Brain (1988)*
70. I, Madman (1989)*
Highlights, hands down, Making Contact...it's like what Abrams tried to do with Super 8 only, in this instance, made IN the actual time period it is cribbing from. What a weird, totally 80s flick that was. I, Madman was a pleasant surprise as was My Best Friend is a Vampire.
Onward into the 90s!
