Got 5 movies in today. Just finished a big project and my hubs was away from home, so I binged. Really enjoyed The Mephisto Waltz from 1971 (I never see this discussed in horror circles, which is surprising). The other highlight of the day was The Frighteners (1996). Fantastic movie. So much fun.

I watched The Mephisto Waltz today too. Despite the weak script and some lackluster acting (looking at you, Alan Alda), it's a genuinely fun, spooky movie. Wisely, it relies more on suggestion than on showing anything.
It's also an example of the racist rule of Hollywood Satanism: If there is a non-white or non straight person in the crowd, they are devil worshippers. Examples: Rosemary's Baby, The Devil Rides Out, and this movie.

I got 4 movies under my belt today. This is my last month working from home before I have to go back to the office, and I'm making the most of it.

I've been listening to the Blank Check podcast right now as they are covering the films of John Carpenter. On the Halloween episode they spend a good amount of time on the history of modern horror and I was pleasantly surprised to see them mention The Mephisto Waltz as part of the discussion.

Watching Sundown : the Vampire In Retreat for the first time. This thing sucks. Unless this improves in the next 30 mins, it’s going straight in the sell pile.

Love Blank Check. I've been saving their John Carpenter horror episodes for this month, but loved their analysis of Snake Plisken being the ultimate Ben character

I guess it's not as oscure as I thought. That's good to hear.

So it looks like you can satisfy the checklist with just the Subset films, and no more than 16 other films, which I’m sure could be narrowed down to less than 10 by combining items.

Been wanting to get these for years (still surprised they never made their way onto discs) but never wanted to pay the premium price point they went for. Did manage to snag this one for a reasonable amount and I am about to put it in for todays theme.

Peter Jackson has a cameo in The Frighteners.

Today is also Clive Barker's birthday, if you want viewing inspiration.

Seriously, now. You are gonna share a pic with that VHS collection in the background? Please tell me you've posted that VHS shelf in a thread somewhere. That looks awesome.

It really depends on your feelings towards comedy/horror. Generally speaking I canít get into them. There are obviously exceptions. Shaun Of The Dead, Evil Dead, IntruderÖ Sundown has an excellent cast and an interesting story that unfortunately has the execution of a movie from the SyFy channel.
I mentioned I bought this to a friend of mine who even though we are both Bruce Campbell fans, neither of us have seen it. He said ďtrust me, if itís a Bruce movie and we havenít seen it yet, itís gonna be horrible.Ē

Them's just the left overs, have been paring it down for years. I'm not one of the current VHS collectors, I just started collecting movies when there was only VHS.

The much depleted Sci-Fi/Horror section of my remaining VHS tapes:
Spoiler:

Probably almost another shelf's worth to get rid of at this point

I hear you. I've been cutting back on all my collections over the last few years. I still have some VHS I haven't gotten rid of but its more about what I really enjoy. The collections are better reflective of my preferences and tastes now.

Shit man you got some good stuff in there. A bunch Iíve been searching for at least.
I never ditched my collection when I switched to discs. I just boxed em up and stored them at my moms.
Last year I built a bar in my basement and Iím trying to keep the 70ís & 80ís dive bar vibe. So I threw an old tube tv down there and my vcr. Iím so glad I didnít ditch my tapes.
Iíve picked up a few at thrift stores or eBay recently, but the vast majority is stuff I already had.

VFW in the basement? That sounds cool. Would love to see a pic.

Definitely regret getting rid of some over the years that have inexplicably shot up in value but I decided in those early days of DVD that it wasn't really the format I was collecting but the movies. And if I had a better version it was probably not worth keeping one that was just the same thing at a lower resolution. (Have about 650 tapes left to upgrade or edit out).

SterlingBen, I have to ask: what company released those Fast Times and Robocop tapes on the far left of the bottom row? Those aren't US releases, or at least not ones with which I'm familiar.

Those are boxed T-Shirts made to look like two copies of the standard VHS next to each other on the shelf. Got me with that nostalgia.
