The Eleventh Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge **Discussion Thread**

The Eleventh Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge
May 1-31, 2020

This thread is for DISCUSSION only.

List thread coming soon...

May is just a couple of weeks away, so it's time, once again, to take a look at your dusty, unopened box sets, your unwatched stacks of Blu-rays, DVDs, HD-DVDs, LDs, VHS or Beta tapes, your DVR, your Netflix queue, etc., and decide what you think you should spend 31 days watching. Now's your chance to finally watch all the stuff that didn't fit, or that you just didn't get around to, during the other Challenges.

Since you choose your own Challenge theme, you make the rules.

There are, however, a few guidelines which everyone should follow.

Challenge Guidelines:

The Challenge runs from April 30th at dusk to June 1st at dawn.

Please state your challenge theme and your challenge goal and rules (if any) at the top of your list(s) in the list thread so others can tell what you're doing.

Please don't duplicate an existing "Official" DVD Talk Challenge.

This guideline is mainly here so we don't subtract from participation in any of the other Challenges, and to encourage participants to focus on genres not already covered by a Challenge, but since everyone's "need to watch" list is different, and you're able to watch stuff that qualifies for one or more of the other Challenges during every other Challenge, you're free to narrow the focus of one of the broader "Official" Challenges.

For example; Say you only collect horror, then you could make your Challenge to watch just horror films, or just horror TV shows, or just zombie films, etc. Or if you have lots of unwatched Sci-Fi, then your MYOC could be just watch Sci-Fi movies, or watch Star Trek shows, or watch TOS, etc.

Here's Trevor's handy-dandy list of Challenges from his "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium thread, updated for the new February challenge:

DVDTalk Challenge Schedule

Month
Month-long Challenge
Partial Month Challenge
JanuaryTVHoliday ends on the 1st; varying Academy Award
FebruaryRomance, Music & Musicalsvarying Academy Award
MarchAction/Adventure/Crimevarying Academy Award
AprilDrive-In/Exploitation/B-Movienone
MayMake-Your-Ownnone
JuneHistorical Appreciationnone
JulySci-Fi/Fantasynone
AugustAnimationnone
SeptemberCriterionnone
OctoberHorrornone
NovemberComedyHoliday starts week of Thanksgiving
DecemberHolidaynone

Since we already have Monthly "Unwatched Media Pile" Threads, please do not use that as a theme.

During past MYOCs people weren't happy with this being used as a theme, and I tend to agree that it is a little lazy, so please give a little thought to your theme and come up with something a little more creative.

Hmmm, what to do? I know I’ve debated dozens of ideas over the last ten Mays, maybe I’ll peek back into the old threads.

Re: The Eleventh Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge **Discussion Thread**

I recently purchased DVDs of the first 3 "Dr. Who" of the "modern" era. I just looked at the cases and it's just over 80 hrs. of episodes. I'm thinking that'll fill the month quite nicely and they're first time viewings to boot. If I don't go that route I'm leaning towards a repeat of "The British are Coming" to focus primarily on the R2 British TV sets I have awaiting viewings.

Re: The Eleventh Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge **Discussion Thread**

I've had my challenge decided for quite some time.

I'm thinking I'll call it the "Extras Extravaganza" with the intent to focus on all those special features (commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, making-of specials and the like). I've been convinced to pick up many a BD (and DVD before that) because of the abundance of extras, it's now time to watch some of them for once.

Where to start is to be determined. I'll probably concentrate on favorite films and see what's there. However, if anyone has some kind of definitive list (or site you've used) which provides the best extra content out there, feel free to share with me.

Bob’O

I may do a deep dive into one of the TV shows I’ve had sitting around forever.

I think I might do a combination of documentaries and animal shows. Been watching a lot of the vet shows on Nat Geo Wild and been watching a lot of my documentary series lately. Started a rewatch of Blue Planet last night, and Iíd like to watch some of my Oshkosh and other aviation documentaries as I canít go this year.

I'm going with the magic of movies and watch films that feature some kind of magic... fantasy or real

I've been thinking about a British film and TV challenge as well. Probably more TV shows than movies since I have a bunch of British police/detective shows and comedies that have been neglected for too long.

Re: The Eleventh Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge **Discussion Thread**

If the challenge was right now, I'd have it pretty easy. I've been binging the new Star Treks (Picard and Discovery, the shorts) on CBS All Access, but I'm almost done and planning on canceling once I finish. I do plan on picking up Disney+ right after, so I might make it a Disney challenge. I think I've done that once before, but they have such a huge catalog, it'd be easy enough to do again without too many repeats (unless I wanted to...)

Thanks for taking over BobO'Link! I'm thinking I'll do a month of 3D movies again (and since a bunch of my unwatched 3D movies are comic book movies, I'll actually be revisiting more than one past challenge theme).

My wife wants to rewatch the series Chuck, so I need to find a theme that will include that.

You could just do a Chuck challenge, as I did a few years ago. Or if you want to give yourself more options, you could do spies or action-comedies.

That's exactly what I did for the 6th (2015) challenge: I Spy - Spy movies and TV programs

I watched some Chuck, I Spy, Mission Impossible, and a few random things. It worked very well.

Re: The Eleventh Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge **Discussion Thread**

I may attempt a Godzilla challenge. I've finished about half of the Criterion set and have many of the other era films on digital.

Or I may go rogue and do something else.

Re: The Eleventh Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge **Discussion Thread**

I'm going to add LGBTQ films to my usual go-to: foreign films. I've tried to do fancy, thematic challenges before and typically lose interest, so I'd decided to do my go-to foreign. Then I was listening to the OCB of the Legally Blonde muscial, and the silly song "Gay or European" gave me the idea to add queer movies to the mix. That should give me a lot of movies from which to choose.

I’m looking at my D+ watchlist and wondering if I should do a Star Wars TV watch. Or maybe sci-fi TV—tons of that I have yet to watch.

Iím considering a Star Wars month as well. Seems appropriate for May (the Fourth.....).

Another option is a History of Film Challenge, where I finally dive into my massive Unseen Cinema, The Movies Begin, and Treasures from American Film Archives sets. But then, I guess I could count that for June as ďhistoricalĒ....
