Re: The 14th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge List Thread
*=First Time Viewing
Rating: 1* to 5* Goals: 1. See at least all the Best Picture Nominees I haven't seen yet (I haven't seen Joker, The Irishman, Ford V Ferrari, 1917, seen the rest) + as many of this year's other nominees as possible. It makes it a bit more fun watching the awards if I've seen the movies. 2. Use this challenge to cut down on my unwatched list. 1/14/20 1. Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (2018) Winner: Best Animated Feature **** Not quite as good as the first time I saw it, I think because it came as a surprise, but still pretty good. 1/15/20 2. Ready Player One (2018)* Nominee: Best Visual Effects ** Read the book which I liked but not as much as others. The movie was pretty mediocre--for me this just works better in my imagination than in a movie. 1/16/20 3. Isle of Dogs (2018) Nominee: Best Soundtrack, Best Animated Feature **** I'm a huge Wes Anderson, was pretty lukewarm on this first time I saw it. Liked it more this time. 1/17/20 4. Green Book (2018) Winner: Best Picture, Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay (Really)?, Nominee: Best Actor, Editing *** This was the only Best Picture winner I hadn't seen so finally got around to it. It was ok, but even though the nominees weren't great last year, no way this should've won. 1/18/20 5. Gulliver's Travels (1939)* Nominee: Best Original Song, Original Score **1/2 Some of the animation looked pretty good, but the movie was just so-so. Some of the other cartoons on the disk were really good though. 6. Ford v Ferrari (2019)* Nominee: Best Picture, Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing. ***1/2 Not bad, considering I don't care about car racing, and still mostly enjoyed this movie. 1/19/20 7. The Irishman (2019) Nominee Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor X 2, Editing, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Costumes, Visual Effects ***1/2 1/20/20 8. Joker (2019) Nominee - Best Picture, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing **** 9. Life Overtakes Me (2019) Nominee: Best Documentary Short 1/22/20 10. Amélie (2001) Nominee: Best Original Screenplay, Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound, Foreign Language Film ***** This is one of my 10 favorite movies, so 5* and should have won some of those awards. 1/25/20 11. On the Beach (1959) Nominee: Best Soundtrack (weird, because this is just variations on Waltzing Metilda), Editing ***1/2 12. 1917 (2019) Nominee: Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, Original Screenplay, Production Design, Makeup, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Visual Effects, Original Score **** Pretty good, better than I thought...and finished goal 1 (all the best picture nominees watched). My pick is Parasite or Jojo Rabbit, but this will probably win. |
