Re: The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***
GOAL: I have a busy month and I'm overseas half of it. So my goal is just to try to watch at least one movie in each of the theme/subset picks at some point this month.
9/30: Theme: Criterion Collection Crossover
1. SECONDS (1966) (Criterion Collection) - ★★½ - Odd movie. Middle-aged white man angst. It was about the emptiness of consumer culture, I suppose, but slow and a bit boring.
10/1: Theme: Cats & Dogs
2. CAT'S EYE (1982) - ★★★½ - Collection of Stephen King vignettes. "Quitter's Inc" was good. The other two were a bit lame.
10/2: Theme: Wedding Horrors
3. THE BRIDE (2017) - ★★ - Really disappointing. The historic stuff with the photos of the dead was cool, but the majority of the film had a current-day plotline about a bride whose new family was trying to do her wrong. It dragged on and on and wasn't exactly original.
10/3: Theme: Playground of the Damned
4. ALONE IN THE DARK (1982) - ★★½ - Interesting characters. The mental hospital and the conflict between the doctor (Pleasance) who wanted to believe all inmates were good, and the actual behavior of the unleashed psychopaths was well done. However, in the end it devolved into a basic slasher and I got a bit bored with it. I was glad when it was over.
10/4: Theme: Zombies
5. THE DEAD DON'T DIE (2019) - ★★★½ - I went in not expecting much due to poor reviews on Amazon. I liked it. Fantastic cast, very low-key and droll. Not the greatest zombie movie, but fun.
10/5: Theme: Donald Pleasence
6. PHENOMENA (1982) - ★★★★ - This was great! There were a lot of original ideas in this and some terrific set pieces. Loved the use of the insects.
10/6: Theme: Family Friendly Horror
10/7: Theme: Australia/NZ
7. BOAR (2018) - ★★★★ - I have a love of cheesy monster movies, and this one is right up there. Nice character development and interesting setting. Goods stuff.
10/8: Theme: Slashers, Giallos, and Serial Killers
10/9: Theme: Stranded
10/10: Theme: Horror Movies in Horror Movies
10/11: Theme: Strip Club Horrors

Re: The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***
Title in BLACK = DVD / Blu Ray from my personal collection
Title in RED = Seen on YouTube
Title in DARK YELLOW = Seen on Amazon Primer streaming service.
Title in DARK RED = Seen on Netflix
Title in BLUE = Seen in the movies during its normal theatrical run.
Title in GREEN = Seen on TV during regular programming.
PURPLE = Theme Night
SEPTEMBER 30 (after sundown)
1. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (presented by Bethany Lutheran College) (2018) Stage play recited in verse based on Washington Irving's classic tale.
OCTOBER 1
2. Borderland (2007) Very underrated movie with a simple premise but truly frightening implications. Americans travel to the border (presumably Tijuana) for the usual debauchery and one of them gets kidnapped by an evil cult that wants to sacrifice him in return for supernatural powers. This kind of thing actually has happened so that gives the movie an extra edge.
2. THEME NIGHT, Part 1: DOGS - Cujo (1983) I hadn't seen this film since '83 when it first premiered! This may be the only Stephen King adaptation where I have not read the book (and I've read most of them). A very good movie that maintains the suspense despite its simple premise which it rounds out with some solid character development and great acting from Dee Wallace and the child actor playing her son.
3. THEME NIGHT, Part 2: CATS - Sleepwalkers (1992) Written by Stephen King directly for the screen, this one could have been a lot better with a bit more backstory and less one-liners. Still, enjoyable in spite of the horribly dated morphing effects.
OCTOBER 2
4. South of Hell, S1 (2015) Episodes: Demons are Forever / Judge and Fury TV series that lasted only one season about a woman possessed by a demon who is herself a demon hunter. The demon resides in her to escape Hell and in return gives the woman her supernatural powers in combating other demons.
5. THEME NIGHT: Weddings - Buio Omega AKA Beyond the Darkness (1979) Excellent film directed by Joe D'Amato about a young man who's fiancée dies and then he digs her up to keep her with him. Just crazy stuff happens as the young "widower" kills more people for apparently no reason.
6. The House of Seven Corpses (1974) A film crew is filming a horror film in an old mansion presided by John Carradine, little do they know that the horrors they film will be eclipsed by real ones.
OCTOBER 3
7. THEME NIGHT: Playgrounds - Let Me In (2010) Great adaptation which I slightly prefer over the Swedish version (which is also brilliant). It's hard to do something new with the tired vampire genre but this film pulls it off.
OCTOBER 4
8. THEME NIGHT: Zombies - Black Summer (2019) Episodes: Human Flow / Dive Zombies are my least favorite horror genre but this series makes some interesting viewing by focusing on interesting characters.
OCTOBER 5
9. THEME NIGHT: Donald Pleasance - The Uncanny (1977) Peter Cushing recounts three cat-centric tales of terror, Donald Pleasance stars in the last one.
OCTOBER 6
10. THEME NIGHT: Family Friendly Horror - Rings (2017) Much maligned sequel that I think deserves a fresh viewing. Some interesting concepts around the theme of life after death.
11. W Delta Z AKA The Killing Gene (2007) What would you do to avoid unbearable pain? That's the premise of this dark police thriller which gets pretty bloody at times.
12. South of Hell, S1 (2015) Episodes: I See You / White Noise
October 7
13. THEME NIGHT: Australia - Backtrack (2015) Very effective Mystery / Horror with some outstanding acting by Adrien Brody as a haunted (literally) psychiatrist who deals with feelings of guilt.
14. Let Us Prey (2015) A mysterious stranger brings out the evil in a Police Station where he is being held prisoner.
OCTOBER 8
15. THEME NIGHT: Slashers / Killers - Lizzie Borden Took an Ax (2014) Low key film that reminds me of made for TV movies of the 70's (and that's a good thing). Christina Ricci stars as the spoiled Lizzie Borden who murders her parents.
OCTOBER 9
16. I Am ZoZo (2012) A group of teenage kids go to a house by the lake to party and fall around with a Ouija board. An entity called ZoZo answers the call and begins to extort its evil influence. Supposedly based on true events. The movie itself is just OK since the "plot" is so damned predictable.
17. THEME NIGHT: Stranded - Headless Horseman (2007) A group of airheads go to a sleepy town (NOT Sleepy Hollow) where the residents claim the story of the Headless Horseman originated. They get killed off one by one as expected. The Headless Horseman does look cool, though.
18. THE WARD (2010) John Carpenter directs this psychological (literally since it takes place in a psychiatric hospital) about a group of young women besieged by a ghost.
OCTOBER 10
19. THEME NIGHT: Horror Movies in Horror Movies - Madhouse (1974) Vincent Price stars almost as himself as a horror movie actor famous for playing Dr. Death in a series of movies. Bizarre murders take place which point to Price as the culprit. Peter Cushing also stars and it's great seeing them both on screen. The bodacious Linda Hayden supplies the eye candy.
OCTOBER 11
20. THEME NIGHT: Strippers - P (2005)
OCTOBER 12
21. THEME NIGHT: Heavy Metal Movies - The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) I don't know why this was listed under the "Heavy Metal Movies" tag but since I own in and it's one of my favorite Vincent Price films, I include it. Price stars as Dr. Phibes who with the help of his beautiful assistant (Virginia North) exacts revenge on surgeons he believes killed his wife (Caroline Munro). Stylish and weird and Price is just brilliant.
22. Mercy Black (2019) An interesting take on the birth of urban legends. Could have been a bit more intense. Young girls believe that if they make a flesh sacrifice to an entity called Mercy Black, it will grant them their wishes.
OCTOBER 13
23. THEME NIGHT: Werewolves - Wildling - A young girl is kept isolated from the world by her "father" (genre great Brad Dourif) to protect her from the Wildlings, feral creatures from the forest. But all is not as it seems as the girl starts to exhibit strange bevavios. Liv Tyler stars (and produces) but her whispery voice makes her and odd choice to play a sheriff. The actress who plays the girl, Bel Powley does an outstanding job. Pretty lightweight when it comes to the horror but still an enjoyable movie.
24. WILD CARD 1: Mazes and Monsters (1982) Tom Hanks stars as a young man who's sense of reality is blurred by the role playing game Mazes and Monsters. More of a psychological thriller so I'll use a WILDCARD here.
25. In the Tall Grass (2019) Stephen King and Joe Hill's novella is padded to feature length. A group of people trapped in a grass field which exerts an evil influence over them. It gets a bit repetitive with all the running around in the grass but the payoff is good.
OCTOBER 14
26. THEME NIGHT: 1944 - The Lodger (1944) A lodger who may or may not be Jack the Ripper movies into a house. More of a*mystery than horror.
27. THEME NIGHT: 1969 - Nightmare in Wax (1969) Pretty standard wax museum tale that's been told before and better.
27. THEME NIGHT: 1994 / 31 FILM SUBSET - Wes Craven's New Nightmare*(1994) A meta-movie about the making of a sequel to the franchise. Heather Langenakmp (who looks absolutely stunning) and Robert Englund play themselves as does director Wes Craven.
OCTOBER 15
28. THEME NIGHT: FILM CREWS - Blair Witch (2016) The true sequel to The Blair Witch Project (eschewing Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows which is almost a stand-alone film). The brother of one of the original missing film crew returns to the Black Woods to find the truth. Interesting concepts regarding the flow of time and some decent scares. Nothing will ever top the original but this is a worthy effort.
OCTOBER 16
29. THEME NIGHT: PRANKS - Carrie (1976) A classic, nothing more need be said.
30. Carrie (2013) Seen with commentary by director Kimberly Peirce who says she saw this as a "superhero origin story" which explains a lot. Chloë Grace Moretz is just too attractive to be believable as the akward Carrie and as many have noted, this remake adds nothing new to the story. The director states she wanted more sex and gore because that's why you see horror films, which explains her one-dimensional view of the genre, and why her remake is so by the numbers.
31. We Are the Night (2010) In spite having all the usual sexy female vampire tropes (glamorous, lesbianism, bored with life) this movie manages to entertain with excellent action, acting and an overall polished look. Three vampire women recruit a newcomer into their group and show her the good life. Their reckless actions and disregard for life catch up to them.
OCTOBER 17
32. THEME NIGHT: FOG - Under the Skin (1976) Totally underrated film about an alien on Earth, played with understated intensity by Scarlett Johansen. A slow burn but worth the watch.
OCTOBER 18
33. THEME NIGHT: LARRY COHEN - God Told Me To (1976) Cohen is the full package here, writer / producer / director, and does a stellar job all around. Truly original film about people getting messages from "God" to commit evil deeds.
OCTOBER 19
34. THEME NIGHT: THORN EMI / HBO CANNON / HBO VIDEO - A Day of Judgement (1981)
35. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019) Populated with dumb characters - yes. Contrived situation - yes. But after those flaws are overlooked you have a pretty suspenseful film. Not as bad as people say.
OCTOBER 20
36. THEME NIGHT: VAMPIRES - Vampire (1979) Made for TV movie about a suave vampire (genre great Richard Lynch) who seeks to unearth his priceless art collection but is thwarted by an architect (Jason Miller from The Exorcist). The gorgeous Kathryn Harrold also stars but is sadly not on screen nearly enough.
37. Ghost Story AKA Circle of Fear (1972) Episodes: Elegy for a Vampire / The New House
38. Ghost Story AKA Circle of Fear (1972) Episodes: The Concrete Captain / At the Cradle Foot
OCTOBER 21
36. THEME NIGHT: JOHN CARL BUECHLER - Evil Bong (2006) I can't believe I actually own this one. On an 8 pack movie set, but still. Horror comedy about an Evil Bong that captures the souls of those who smoke it.
37. Demonic Toys (1992)
OCTOBER 22
38. THEME NIGHT: 50 HORROR MOVIES YOU HAVEN'T SEEN - Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural (1973)
39. OUIJA (2014) Even though the film starts with teenagers doing something really stupid, the movie manages to get better with some good story elements and nice atmosphere. Nothing special, but it could have been much worse.
40. OUIJA: Origin of Evil (2016) Normally, I'm not a fan of prequels, but this one fits in so seamlessly with the original that I'll give it a pass. Especially since the story is decent and the introduction of the Oujia board makes sense. Having it be a period piece is an extra that gives the film a special look.
OCTOBER 23
41. THEME NIGHT: HOME INVASION HORROR - Inside (2016) American remake of the much bloodier French film Á L'Interior. A pregnant woman is besieged in her own home by another woman.
42. Channel Zero (2016) Episodes: You Have to Go Inside / I'll Hold Your Hand
OCTOBER 24
43. THEME NIGHT: RETAIL ESTABLISHMENT HORROR - Messiah of Evil (1973) Seen on the Creature Features Youtube channel with special guest co-host Barbara Crampton.
OCTOBER 25
44. THEME NIGHT: JOE BOB BRIGGS - Embrace of the Vampire (1993) Alyssa Milano never looked so good and it's the main reason I keep coming back to this soft-core vampire flick.
45. South of Hell, S1 (2015) Episodes: The One That Got Away / South of the Border
OCTOBER 26
46. THEME NIGHT: HORROR HOSTS - Nightmare in Blood (1977) Seen on the Creature Features Youtube channel with guest host John Stanley himself who directed this movie.
OCTOBER 27
47. THEME NIGHT: PARTIES - Grave (original French title: Raw) (2016) Very good French movie about a young girl who harbors cannibalistic urges.
48. Ghost Story AKA Circle of Fear (1972) Episodes: Bad Connection / Alter Ego
49. Ghost Story AKA Circle of Fear (1972) Episodes: House of Evil / Cry of the Cat
OCTOBER 28
50. South of Hell, S1 (2015) Episodes: Take Life Now / Blood Relations
51. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) One of the best modern horror films. Building on a simple premise that keeps you guessing until the end. This is what happens when a good idea meets a good director.
52. THEME NIGHT: ANTHOLOGIES - The House that Dripped Blood (1971) Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Ingrid Pitt. Just for that it's a must see.
OCTOBER 29
53. THEME NIGHT: SUPERNATURAL - Look Away (2018) A teenage girl discovers that her image in the mirror has a life of it's own and seeks to take over her life. Above average psychological horror, very low-key but effective.
54. The Mummy (2017) If you take away all the Tom Cruise action scenes, this could be a decent movie. And mind you, I like Tom Cruise, but here his presence is overbearing.
55. 30 Days of Night (2007) One of the few vampire movies that doesn't romanticize the undead and shows them as the bloodsucking parasites they are. Lots of gore and a suspenseful story.
OCTOBER 30
56. Asylum (1972)
57. Cathy's Curse (1977) The evil child was a common trope in the 70's and this is one example. Nothing new here but the familiarity of it makes it the equivalent of comfort food.
58. THEME NIGHT: WITCHES - Necromancy (1972) The beautiful Pamela Franklin stars as a young bride lured to town full of witches presided over by Orson Wells. Pretty damn good.
59. WILDCARD 2: Good Witch (2015) Episodes: Starting Over... Again / Apologies and RemembrancesNot horror at all, thus the wildcard, but with a very slight supernatural angle. TV series about a "good witch", one that uses her knowledge of herbal medicine for the townsfolk.
OCTOBER 31
60. ATTEND AN EVENT: Day of the Dead Festival in my city.
61. Suspiria (2018)
62. Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)
63. Rostro Infernal AKA The Incredible Face of Dr. B (1963)
63. Black Sunday AKA Mask of the Demon (1960) Seen at a screening in my local public library. I do however have this movie in my personal collection.
62.25. THEME NIGHT: HALLOWEEN - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Segment from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad) (1949) Seen at a screening in my local public library.
62.5 WILDCARD 3: Un Chien Andalou (1929) Seen at a screening in my local public library. Total weirdness courtesy of Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali.
63. Ghost Story (1972) Episode: Creatures of the Canyon. Angie Dickinson stars as a woman stalked by a dog.
ACTIVITIES DONE THROUGHOUT THE MONTH:
64. Attend an event: Day of the Dead "Catrinas" Festival. Note: a "Catrinas" is a woman with colorful skull-face makeup.
65. Venture into the literary world (novel): Cast a Cold Eye by Alan Ryan. Ghost story set in Ireland.
66. Venture into the literary world (graphic novel): Hellboy Omnibus Vol. 3: The Wild Hunt

Re: The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***
The 15th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge
Count: 64
~~ Bram Stoker's Dracula / 4K-UHD ☼ / Oct. 1
----Coppla's take on the Dracula tale is one of my favourite of the sub-genre, but the real attraction of this format is Sony's remix in Dolby Atmos, the soundmix is mesmerizing and such a standout
~~ The Dead Files [episode: Fatal Attachment - Huntington, West Virginia] / Oct. 1 ☼
~~ The Dead Files [episode: Absorbed] / Oct. 1 ☼
~~ Paranormal Survivor [episode: Dark Dreams] / Oct. 2 ☼
~~ Gremlins / 4K: Dolby Vision ☼/ Oct. 2
----Dante really merged, horror and comedy so well here, so cuddly and yet so ready to cause mayhem at a heartbeat, the Dolby Vision color grading is the best this has looked on home video
~~ American Horror Story: 1984: [episode: Slashdance] / Oct. 3 ☼
~~ One Dark Night / [with Director and Producer commentary track ☼] / Oct. 4
----I haven't seen this since it's theatrical release and it still thrills, even with a PG rating. The effects were highly effective
~~ Paranormal Survivor [episode: Voices of the Dead] / Oct. 5 ☼
~~ Ghost Adventures [episode: Spine-Chilling Southwest] / Oct. 6 ☼[2hr]
~~ Monsters & Mysteries in America [ep. Melonheads, Devil Monkey, Blue Albino Woman / Oct. 7 ☼
~~ The Shining / 4K UHD: Dolby Vision ☼ / Oct. 8
----Hand it to Warner's to create a transfer that truly astounds - the color palette is eye popping, and the movie overall is already great in the first place.
~~ Cujo / 1983 / [feature length audio commentary by author Lee Gambin ☼] / Oct. 9
----Fascinating commentary track that revealed a lot of the film's history
~~ American Horror Story: 1984 [episode: True Killers] / Oct. 10 ☼
~~ Ghost Adventures [episode: Haven of Horrors] / Oct. 10 ☼ [2 hrs]
~~ The Curse of La Llorona / Oct. 11 ☼
----I liked the premise and the Dolby Atmos soundmix is quite effective, but the overall impression of the movie left me a bit underwhelmed.
~~ Trick or Treat / 1952 / 8 min. / Oct. 11 [WILD CARD #1]
~~ Ghost Nation [episode: The Boys Are Back] / Oct. 11 ☼
~~ Ghoulies / 1985 / Oct. 12
----Turner Classic Movie's gave me a bit of nostalgia for me, but having seen this only once before, I realized it was very flawed and a tad corny.
~~ Annabelle / Oct. 14 ☼
----I liked this more than I thought I would, the Annabelle movies have become my favourite stories in the Conjuring universe.
~~ The Addams Family / 2019 / 3D / Oct. 15 ☼
----Decent 3D presentation, couldn't save the fact that this movie could have been trimmed by some ten minutes or so - the story is too simplistic and a bit vapid ultimately.
~~ My Horror Story [episode 4] / Oct. 15 ☼
~~ Happy Birthday to Me / 1981 / Oct. 16 ☼
----First time seeing this, probably the surprise of the 'Challenge.
~~ The Omen / 1976 / 4K streaming ☼ / Oct. 17
----My favourite of the series and the 4K streaming version while sharp, the colors look a bit drained compared to the screenshots I've seen of the new Arrow deluxe edition.
~~ The Omen Legacy / 2001 / Oct. 17 ☼
~~ The Holzer Files [episode: Phantoms of the Fire] / Oct. 18 ☼
~~ The Holzer Files [episode: They Buried Me Alive] / Oct. 18 ☼
~~ The Holzer Files [episode: A Grave Revenge] / Oct. 18 ☼
~~ Memory: Origins Of Alien / Oct. 19 ☼
----While not too redundant to the special features on the Alien bluray edition, this still managed to be a fascinating recounting of the influences and creation of the classic sci-fi/horror movie.
~~ Nightmare City / 2K Techniscope transfer / with commentary track ☼ / Oct. 20
----This is movie is so crazy and even while listening to the commentary track watching what unfolds on screen is a scream - I didn't realize that Tom Savini was/is slated to do a remake.
~~ Train to Busan / Oct. 20 ☼
----While I was expecting a lot more gore, the characters and plot progression is riveting.
~~ Ghost Nation [episode: A Nightmare in the Nursery] / Oct. 21 ☼
~~ Ghost Adventures [episode: Serial Killer Spirits: Axe Killer Jail] / Oct. 21 ☼
~~ The Dead Files [episode: The Watcher & the Shapeshifter] / Oct. 21 ☼
~~ Zombieland: Double Tap / Oct. 21 ☼
----I thought the first twenty minutes took a while to get used to, as the story and humor got broader and more funny, I got it's 'vibe' - the Luke Wilson, and companion scene, is the highlight.
~~ The Evil Dead / 2013 / 96 min. unrated version ☼ / Oct. 21
----Good lord, the makers of this movie thought some of the more bits of extreme gore, was going to get by the MPAA untouched - HAH! oh this was a trip, it's not a great remake, but the tenacity and blood and guts are a blast.
~~ The Mummy / 2017 / Oct. 21 ☼
----This movie's plot was all OVER the place, there's some fun bits, but then it gets way too serious for its own good - Tom Cruise's acting range is that of a paper bag.
~~ My Horror Story [episode 3] / Oct. 22 ☼
~~ American Horror Story: 1984 [episode: Red Dawn] / Oct. 22 ☼
~~ Bob's Burgers [episode: Pig Trouble in Little Tina] / Oct. 22 ☼
~~ The Simpsons [episode: Treehouse of Terror XXX] / Oct. 22 ☼
~~ Parasite / 1983 / [3D viewing] / Oct. 22 ☼
----The script and story is downright bewildering, but the 3D is just fantastic, I don't think I could enjoy this just in 2D.
~~ Most Terrifying Places [episode: Graveyard of the Atlantic] / Oct. 23 ☼
~~ Christine / 4K UHD ☼ / Oct. 23
----After 'The Thing' this has become my second favourite John Carpenter movie and Sony's deluxe transfer for 4K UHD is something to behold in both picture quality and Atmos remix - major thumbs up!!
~~ Jigsaw / 4K UHD / Oct. 23 ☼
----This movie was one huge 'what the f***?!' - I enjoyed it, but it felt unnecessary and a tad way over the top in its final connecting all the dots of the plot.
~~ American Horror Story [episode: 100] / Oct. 24 ☼
~~ The Changeling / with commentary track ☼ / Oct. 24
----Even though on the commentary track - the director and producer claim this isn't a "horror" movie - I disagree. Great backstory and insights to the making a classic to the 'ghost / haunted house' genre.
~~ Monsters & Mysteries in America [episode: UFO Bigfoot; Lake Pepin Monster; Cajun Werewolf] / Oct. 24 ☼
~~ New York Ripper / 4K restoration / with commentary track ☼ / Oct. 25
----For a movie that is so nasty and grimy, Blue Underground's 4K transfer is just amazing and the commentary track is a bevy of fascinating film history of Fulci's most notorious slasher movie.
~~ The Dead Files [episode: Deadly Force] / Oct. 25 ☼
~~ Innocent Blood / international cut ☼ / Oct. 25
----Oh I had forgotten how great the cast is here; and for such a odd premise, Landis in my opinion manages to pull it off.
~~ Ghost Adventures [episode: Serial Killer Spirits: H.H. Holmes' Murder House] Oct. 25 ☼
~~ Ghost Adventures [episode: Serial Killer Spirits: John Gacy Prison] Oct. 25 ☼
~~ The Brood / Wicked-Vision Media transfer / with commentary track ☼ / Oct. 26
----I'm for one am not impressed with Criterion's transfer, but with this German bluray edition, this one is far and away the best looking the movie is represented on home video. It's my fave Cronenberg movie and the commentary track was very illuminating.
~~ Dawn of the Dead / with Richard P. Rubinstein commentary ☼ / Oct. 26
----As long as I have owned the Deluxe edition - I'm not sure why it took so long to actually give a listen to Rubinstein's comments on the film.
~~ Monsters & Mysteries in America [episode: Sykesville Monster; Lechuza; The Rake] / Oct. 26 ☼
~~ Monsters & Mysteries in America [episode: Ohio Grassman; Green Clawed Beast; Big Muddy Monster] / Oct. 27 ☼
~~ Tales from the Crypt Presents Demon Knight / commentary track ☼ / Oct. 27
----This was a chore to listen to, if this hadn't been moderated by Blu-ray producer Michael Felsher, listening to Ernest Dickerson's recounting of the making of this movie would have been extremely dull.
~~ Krug and Co. / 78min. version of "Last House on the Left" / Oct. 27 ☼
----When comparing this to the longer cut, you'll notice the missing footage quite blatantly, it really doesn't work abridged.
~~ Ghost Nation [episode: The Novelist's Nightmare] / Oct. 28 ☼
~~ The Holzer Files [episode: The Devil Texas] / Oct. 28 ☼
~~ C.H.U.D. / 96 min. 'integral' version ☼ / Oct. 28
----I remember seeing this during its initial theatrical run and absolutely hating it, did the alternate cut work or make the story more logically plausible? eh... no.
~~ Fall Break (aka The Mutilator) / unrated version ☼ / Oct. 28
----First time seeing the restored 'gory' bits - wow! acting though and that music - cringe inducing.
~~ Most Terrifying Places [episode: Shadow Factory] / Oct. 29
~~ The Dead Files [episode: The Demon Inside & The Gut Wrencher] [2 hr] / Oct. 29
~~ Most Terrifying Places in America [episode: Nevada Clown Motel & Possession in the Pub] [2 hr.] / Oct. 29 ☼
~~ Resident Evil: Afterlife / 4K UHD ☼ / Oct. 29
----The movie was meant and best appreciated in 3D, here though the Atmos mix is a monster and makes up for the lack of visual intensity.
~~ Most Terrifying Places [episode: Death Car] / Oct. 30
~~ Most Terrifying Place [episode: Ship of Anguished Spirits] / Oct. 30
~~ Hour of the Wof / 1968 / 2K 2016 restoration ☼ / Oct. 30
----Fascinating to watch prior to 'The Lifehouse' since it's a tighter story, editing and is amazing that Bergman can effortlessly drift into making a horror/thriller movie when his bread and butter is generally high art drama.
~~ The Lifehouse / Oct. 30 ☼
----I thought this was highly overrated, despite an interesting and potential premise, at almost two hours I thought this movie dragged; it also didn't help that amongst the garbled delivery of lines, it left me straining to understanding what was being said.
~~ Modern Family [episode: The Last Halloween] / Oct. 30 ☼ [WILD CARD #2]
~~ Ghost Adventures [episode: Serial Killer Spirits: Ted Bundy Ritual House] / Oct. 30 ☼
~~ My Horror Story [episode: Run, Ghost Boy, Run] / Oct. 31 ☼
~~ My Horror Story [episode: Home Sweet Hell] / Oct. 31 ☼
~~ American Horror Story 1984 [episode: The Lady in White] / Oct. 31 ☼
~~ An American Werewolf in London / 2019 2K restoration / Paul Davis commentary track / Oct. 31
----2019's Best Arrow Special Edition of the year !! great highly informative commentary track.
~~ The Paul Lynde Halloween Special / 1976 / Oct. 31 ☼
~~ Pride and Prejudice and Zombies / 4K UHD / Oct. 31
----I was surprised how much intensity and little bits of blood and gore made it into a PG-13 rated movie - Lily James could read the telephone book and I'd still be riveted.
~~ Hell Fest / Oct. 31 ☼
----I was expecting more gore in this, but the production design, sound mix and that ending, which I "got" redeemed the movie.
~~ Fresh Off the Boat [episode: HAL-LOU-WEEN] / Oct. 31 ☼
~~ Superstore [episode: Trick or Treat] / Oct. 31 ☼
~~ Ghost Adventures [episode: Curse of the Harrisville Farmhouse] [2 hr.] / Oct. 31 ☼
~~ The Fog / 1980 / 4K UHD: Dolby Vision ☼ / Oct.31
----While I have some minor flaws with this movie, and no I won't stomach seeing the remake, this movie is middle-tier Carpenter in my opinion.
~~ Pet Semetary / 1989 / 4K UHD: Dolby Vision ☼ / Nov. 1
----I know this movie, in general gets a lot of mixed reviews, but I thought director Mary Lambert did a commendable job in transitioning the book to a movie.

Re: The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***
If my calculations are correct this is my 5th attempt at this challenge and will likely be my lowest total number, but it's something I want to try again after a year off.
My Goal - 40. I'd love to say 100, but will be stoked to get more than 1 a day. I will be busy at work and the Dodgers are in the post-season, so we'll see what I can do.
Movies
1. Ramekin:* Pretty sure this was just someone's attempt to see if they could make a movie in a day and get a streaming platform to take it.
2. Happy Death Day:* A surprisingly solid little slasher. Very much just a mashup of Final Destination and Groundhog Day, but it works.
3. Willow Creek:* A rare solid entry in the found footage genre. I guess that's what happens when you use decent actors, real people playing themselves, and don't over edit.
4. The First Purge:* I've enjoyed the series for what it is, but this one just didn't really work. The allegory was never deep in these movies, but this one was a bit heavy handed.
5. Midsommar*: Holy shit this movie was incredible. I was fully expecting to hate it based on its popularity and the people who loved it, but I was wrong.

10/2
1. Evil Dead 2
2. Army of Darkness Theatrical Cut

3. Army of Darkness TV Cut
Went from probably the best print I've seen of AoD to probably the worst, so sort of hard to watch, but some of the language edits were amusing.
4. Scanners
10/12
5. Happy Death Day 2U (watched on plane)*
10/25
6. Halloween (Shudder, Joe Bob Briggs)
7. Halloween 4 (Shudder, more Joe Bob)*
10/26
8. It Follows*
Pretty creepy. I liked it.
10/27
9. Annihalation*
10/29
10. Cold Prey II*
10/31
11. One Cut of the Dead (Shudder)*
