Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter[ (1984) (Friday the 13th 4-Movie Collection) 7/10
Final Chapter is a much better movie than Part 3. The earlier film is lackluster with bland victims and very little suspense except for some of the final chase. I watched it in 3D (red/blue glasses) and that worked better than I expected although it was only fair most of the time. Some of the 3D money shots were effective. Final Chapter has more interesting characters, better kills (even if less gory), tension throughout the film, and a solid finish.
Howling IV: The Original Nightmare[ (1988)
An author moves to a small rural town for a rest but discovers that the people there are harboring a secret. I watched this since my ratings indicated that I liked this the best of the three sequels that I watched but I didn't remember much about it. There isn't a whole lot of werewolf action. Much of the film is about discovering and uncovering the town's mystery which I enjoyed. There is a gooey transformation scene near the end and the finish to the story is OK but not great. [5.5/10

01. Hereditary (2018)* Streaming Amazon
After an old woman dies her children and grandchildren begin to experience ominous and sometime deadly events. One of the most consistently creepy movies I've seen with an increasing sense of foreboding that never lets up and there are few shocking moments as well. An intelligent script, smartly made with excellent acting. I'm not sure why but the end was just a little bit of a letdown for me even though it all made sense. 8/10
02. The Black Cat (1966)* (Severin Hemisphere Horrors) Blu-Ray
A wealthy young man ruins his marriage and the rest of his life when he turns to drink and becomes obsessed with a black cat. A fairly faithful (I think) adaptation of the Poe story transplanted to a slightly sleazy mid-1960's USA. Low budget with some very poor acting (female lead) but the film is well enough made to be entertaining despite the shortcomings. 6/10
03. The Blood Drinkers aka Vampire People (1964) (Severin Hemisphere Horrors) Blu-Ray
A powerful vampire tries to save his true love's undead life by getting the heart of her twin sister. A different take on vampires made in the Philippines. In color but many scenes are tinted red (vampire threat) or blue (night). This makes certain scenes very eerie. Ronald Remy is a very imposting head vampire. Atmospheric but it did drag a little in spots. 5.5/10
04. Night of the Wild (2015)* Streaming Amazon
Green, glowing meteorites cause most canines to become bloodthirsty killers. Not as satisfying as I hoped it would be. A few a-hole dog owners got eaten by their little darlings but for the most part it was just seemingly random people getting attacked by the same bunch of dogs. Stereotypic characters but the acting wasn't awful and the end was OK. 4/10

05. Hell House LLC (2015)* Streaming Amazon
Fake documentary film looking back at a deadly incident at a Halloween haunted house attraction in a small town. A found footage film which I usually don't care for because of the shaky-cam effects but this one had some interviews to break that up and there were a few nice scares along the way. Still there is always the point when I think a person just wouldn't be recording anything at that particular moment. 6/10
06. Schizo (1976)* (The Pete Walker Collection) Blu-Ray
Starting on her wedding day a woman begins to see a sinister figure from her past but no one believes her. Thriller with supernatural and slasher elements has an interesting story and good acting. Reminded me of an English giallo at times. I did guess the major part of the ending but not all of it. 5/10
07. Murder Obsession aka Murder Syndrome (1981)*
An actor who had a traumatic childhood returns home to visit his mother and is joined by his girlfriend and several of his co-workers. Basically a giallo but with doses of satanic rituals and a touch of the supernatural. Confusing at times with a convoluted finish that ends up actually working, it's never dull. 5/10

08. Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996)* (Leprechaun The Complete Movie Collection) Blu-Ray
The leprechaun wants to become a king by marrying the princess of another planet but a crazed scientist and some over the top space marines get in his way. Insanely silly, sometimes almost stupid but I got plenty of laughs and ended up really liking it. Less than stellar effects, a fast pace, and plenty of nods to other movies add to the fun. 6/10
09. The Fan (1982)* Blu-Ray
A teenage girl is obsessed with a popular pop star and after her letters to him go unanswered she runs away hoping to meet when he does a TV show. Very well made, intense film and the star does an excellent job as the teen but it is not pleasant to watch. Some mixed feeling here. 7.5/10
10. Splatter University (1984)* Blu-Ray
Students and faculty at a small religious college are being savagely murdered. By the numbers slasher movie with OK effects and sub par acting. The students act more like high school kids than college, the plot made less sense than usual and I was able to pick out the killer pretty early on. Still the lead actress was animated if not always capable and there was almost a tongue in cheek attitude which made it watchable. 5/10

11. The Chilling (1989)*
Bodies that have been cryonically frozen return to life due to lightening strikes and run amok at the storage facility. Pretty good. Little gore and a long buildup but the attack on the plant has lots of fun moments and the zombies look fine. Predictable plot with a few holes (why is that guy there?) but still enjoyable. Some name actors involved (Linda Blair, Dan Haggerty, Troy Donahue). 6/10
12. Zombi 4 aka After Death (1989) Blu-Ray
Two unrelated groups of people end up on an island that once had a medical research facility but now is populated by zombies. Lots of action with both fast and slow moving zombies but the constant attacks get to feel the same after a while. Just a little plot, a few atmospheric sets, and good gore effects with especially impressive ones at the beginning and end. 5/10
13. The Hanging Woman aka Terror of the Living Dead (1973)*
When a young man comes to a village to hear the reading of his uncle's will he is shocked to find a woman hanging from a tree just outside the graveyard. Then things get even stranger. Enjoyable film is a mystery with mysticism, 19th century science, and zombies. No big scares but there's a nice atmosphere and some great sets. Paul Naschy shines as the sleazy gravedigger. 6.5/10

14. Raw Meat aka Death Line (1972)*
A London police inspector investigates the disappearance of a government official and discovers that others were last seen at the same subway station. Donald Pleasence is great as the abrasive inspector and there are some creepy tunnels that are used to great effect at times. Solid story with some gruesome parts and good acting all around. 7/10
15. The Devil Within Her aka I Don't Want to Be Born (1975)*
A woman is cursed by a horny little person and ends up having a baby with almost superhuman strength and fits of intense violence. Could it be ... SATAN? Despite Donald Pleasence and Caroline Munro in small roles, this didn't work for me. It started out OK but I was never convinced of the premise, much of what was supposed to be eerie was just kind of funny, and it got tedious towards the end. 4/10
16. Phenomena (1985) Blu-Ray
A teenage girl with a psychic link to insects teams up with an entomologist to try to find out who is killing girls around an exclusive Swiss boarding school. Enjoyable. Moves along at a good pace with some impressive photography but once the finale starts the pace picks up and things get crazy and bizarre. 6/10

17. The Woodland Haunting 2 (2006)* (Hostile Hauntings)
Paranormal investigators are called to investigate a haunting. They don't get there in time. Pointless, meandering story with no real acting although lines are delivered quite naturally. Some very clever padding techniques are used and I'm embarrassed to admit I got a few chuckles out of some really stupid humor. Not painful to watch but best to avoid. 3/10
18. Lady in White (1988)*
Apparitions help a 10 year old boy reveal the identity of a killer who has been murdering children for years. Set in 1960's small town USA and told from a child's point of view this has some good suspenseful and creepy scenes. Not a lot of violence and even less gore and some effects are a little dated. Good comic relief from bickering immigrant grandparents. 6/10
19. Don't Panic (1988)* (BCI Crypt of Terror: Horror from South of the Border Vol. 1)
After playing with a Ouija board at his birthday party, a teenager begins of have visions of his friends being stabbed to death and is horrified to discover that it is actually happening. The makeup and deaths are pretty well done but it isn't until the last half hour that things get interesting. The first hour is a chore to get through and it doesn't help that our hero is running around in his dinosaur pajamas for a good part of that time. 4.5/10

20. Inn of the Damned (1975)* (Oz-Ploitation Boxset Vol. 1 R4)
In 1896 Australia an elderly couple run an inn along a stagecoach route where guests check in but don't check out. There's a western style manhunt story that plays out before the focus moves entirely to the inn story. No gore or scares but the conclusion is a little creepy and there's a nifty means of murder involved. Good effort. 5/10
21. The Tunnel (2011)*
A news team explores abandoned subway tunnels to find out why the government stopped plans to use them as part of a water recycling project. Faux documentary with interviews and film from the expedition. There is growing tension and a few really creepy parts along with some great underground locations but this never really grabbed. 5.5/10
22. The Sweet Sound of Death aka La llamada (1965)* (on The Hanging Woman disk)
A man and a woman pledge their love even beyond death and soon after the woman is supposedly killed in a plane crash but returns to the man a day later. Quiet, unusual ghost story with some nice atmosphere and eeriness instead of scares. The end is a bit chilling. 5/10
23. Screaming Dead (2003)* (Shock-O-Rama Horror Collection)
A photographer, specializing in artistic fetish picture, and five associates go to an abandoned hospital, rumored to be haunted, for a photo shoot. Uneven effort. Plot is predictable but there is a very good buildup but after that things are just kind of flat. Good pacing and a good low budget cast but the special effects are lacking. 4.5/10

24. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)
Now grown Tommy Jarvis, survivor of Jason's last rampage, is moved to a halfway house to prepare him to enter the world after spending most of his life in institutions. Then the killings begin. OK entry, somewhat tongue in cheek. Good effects and makeup with so many kills some had to be done off camera but with little suspenseful buildup. The final chase is exciting and I like the arc they do with Tommy. 5/10
25. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
Tommy accidentally resurrects Jason and mayhem follows. I liked the actor who played Tommy in Part V better but overall this movie is superior. There's lots of creepy atmosphere throughout and the kills are more interesting as are the buildups. Theres some fun winks and outright humor which is actually funny and doesn't detract. 6.5/10
26. Death Walks at Midnight (1972)* (Arrow Death Walks Twice) Blu-Ray
A model is stalked by a man who she saw commit a brutal murder when she was under the influence of a hallucinogen but there is no evidence of the crime. Some gory murders, a typically convoluted plot, and some good chases make for an entertaining giallo. 5.5/10
27. Jack the Ripper (1959)* Blu-Ray
US version. An American police detective helps the London police track down Jack the Ripper. Pretty good with a some grisly stuff for the time but the emphasis is on the mood of the menacing, foggy London nights and the public's growing fear. Some very evocative street sets and decent acting. 5/10

28. Don't Torture a Duckling (1972)* Blu-Ray
In a rural Italian village police and reporters have to deal with local fear and superstition while they try to find out who is strangling boys. Well paced mystery with solid performances and some very gruesome scenes. There are some spectacular locations which are effectively used in the story. 7/10
29. Mystery on Monster Island (1981)*
After their ship blows up two men are stranded on a mysterious island and find visiting cannibals, dinosaur like creatures, seaweed people, a hot babe, and cloaked raiders among other things. I assume this was supposed to be a children's movie so it's probably OK for that but I found it kind of lame with one extremely annoying character. 3.5/10
30. Slaughterhouse (1987)* Blu-Ray
An elderly recluse uses his savage if dimwitted son against the people he blames for losing his slaughterhouse business and anyone else who gets in the way. Fun, low budget slasher movie has a touch of humor and a fair amount of gore with surprisingly good acting, great locations indoors and out, fast pacing and a few tense scenes. The film opens with scenes from a real slaughterhouse so be warned. 6/10

31. Eight Legged Freaks (2002)*
In a small town, spiders exposed to toxic waste grow really, really big. VERY standard plot with the usual bunch of characters but made with a light touch and some actually funny humor. The spiders look good and there's many different kinds (explained). Scarlett Johansson playing the sheriff's daughter doesn't hurt one bit. 6/10
32. Mimic (1997)* (Mimic 3 Film Set)
Scientists create a new species of insect to combat a plague that kills children but the cure becomes more dangerous than the disease. Excellent. Interesting story, fine acting, lots of tense, creepy underground scenes and a thrilling climax. The creatures look great. 7.5/10
33. Absentia (2011)*
A woman's husband who had been missing for more than seven years suddenly returns in a battered and almost catatonic state. Very creepy, very intense with several good scares and a somewhat different plot. Not much gore, more of a quiet, psychological story with solid acting. 8/10

October 11
34. The Long Hair of Death (1965)* Blu-Ray
In the late 1400's a woman is burned for witchcraft and murdering the count's brother. As she dies she curses the count and his family. Leisurely paced, moody Gothic horror film full of creepy corridors and underground vaults. Good soundtrack adds a lot to the atmosphere. Barbara Steele shines as the witch and her oldest daughter. 6.5/10
35. Vamp (1986)* Blu-Ray
Two pledges go to a strip club to hire a dancer for a frat party but the one they pick turns out to be a vampire. Just OK. The vampire makeup is pretty good and the movie has a more serious tone than I expected but I couldn't get into this one. 5/10
36. The House That Screamed (2000)*
An author of horror novels rents a haunted house in order to write his next novel there. Not a good idea. This is not The House That Screamed that's part of the subset list. The story has some good ideas but they usually aren't well executed and there are several clever bits of padding in an already short film. The lead doesn't have the acting skills to really pull off his role but he's not awful either. Slow at times but watchable. 4.5/10

37. The Incubus (1982) Blu-Ray
Small town officials try to find out who is behind a series of savage murders and rapes. Compelling story relies on the viewer to put some things together and has a chilling finish although in retrospect there are some unexplained points. A growing mood of uneasiness is particularly well done. 7/10
38. Evilspeak (1981)*
At a military academy, a loser cadet who is bullied by students and staff uses a computer to help translate an ancient ritual that will get him the power of Satan. Long buildup generates a real dislike for the bullies and the story goes in a darker directions than I anticipated. Clint Howard is good as the loser cadet. 5/10
39. In the Mouth of Madness (1994)* Blu-Ray
An insurance investigator goes to a town that no one thinks exists in order to find a missing horror author whose novels appear to have strange effects on some readers. Entertaining and interesting film dealing with cosmic horror of a Lovecraftian type. Several really bizarre scenes add to the fun. 6.5/10
40. Wendigo (2001)* (The Larry Fessenden Collection) Blu-Ray
A couple and their young son go to a rural area for a snowy long weekend but run into trouble when they anger a local hunter by hitting the deer he was tracking. Well made psychological horror film keeps ratcheting up the tension and slowly adds a supernatural element to the mix. Strong visuals. The actor who played the son was particularly effective. 7/10

41. Voodoo Woman (1957)* Streaming Amazon
In Africa a crazed British doctor uses voodoo rituals and Western science to turn a woman into an indestructible creature. Pretty good AIP drive in fodder stars B-movie babe Marla English and hunky Mike Conners (when he was still going by Touch Conners). 5.5/10
42. Puppetmaster III: Toulon's Revenge (1991)* (Charles Band's Puppetmaster Collection)
In Berlin during WW2 Andre Toulon and his puppets fight the Nazis who want his secret of animating objects. A good cast, an interesting story, and well done puppets make for a fun watch. 6/10
43. Howling V: The Rebirth (1989)* (Timeless Media Group: Howling Trilogy)
A group of people are invited to a castle near Budapest that has been closed for 500 years. Lackluster sequel is a little interesting at first but turns into a series of similar killings. There is also a mystery to be solved but the solution isn't much of a surprise. 4.5/10

44. The Climax (1944) (Universal The Boris Karloff Collection)
Karloff plays an unstable doctor who uses hypnosis to gain power over a young opera singer who reminds him of his lover who disappeared ten years ago. Karloff is always worth watching and he does a nice job playing both concerned and menacing. There are a few longish musical numbers which slow things down a little but are entertaining for what they are. 6/10
45. The Cremator (1969)* Blu-Ray
A somewhat pompous and self-centered but seemingly compassionate man who runs a crematorium is introduced to Nazi ideas and radically changes. Set during the early years of WW2. An art film but a good one. The horror creeps up subtly and the ending is truly chilling once you realize what's going on. The acting is excellent and the soundtrack does a perfect job enhancing the visuals. I was tempted to watch this again. 8.5/10
46. Aswang (1994)*
A young woman, pregnant and unmarried, signs a contract to turn her baby over to a married couple who can't have children so they can get an inheritance. There's a lot to like here especially several nice jump scares, entertaining WTF action, icky gory moments and a kind of different but terrible horror. The story seems to get out of control near the end and the shocking conclusion just barely makes sense if at all. 6.5/10
47. Wendigo aka Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo (1995)* Streaming Amazon
In Upper Michigan hunters disturb a mystic circle freeing the fearsome Wendigo. Pretty bad. Almost entertaining at times, the high point is a decent stop-motion Wendigo. Constant background music is usually too loud and often doesn't fits the action. 3/10

48. Effects (1979)*
Members of a film crew making a low budget horror movie is a remote area begin to feel that something is not quite right. Dark, unsettling film with multiple layers often blurs the line between reality and fantasy. Even now I'm not sure about some scenes. John Harrison who plays the unemotional director does a very good job. 5.5/10
49. Paranormal Activity (2007)* (Paranormal Activity 6 Movie Collection) Blu-Ray
A young couple begins to experience strange occurrences in their new home similar to things that have happened to the woman at other times in her life. Pretty good build up of suspense and tension but no big scares until the excellent finish. 6/10

After being accidentally exposed to a South American native drug, a medical researcher begins having visions of a mysterious and menacing figure. Interesting mix of serial killer mystery with touches of SF and horror. Nice performances by all which kept me absorbed at all times. 7/10
51. War of the Gargantuas (1966)
Two giant humanoid creatures, one good and one evil, fight each other and the armed forces. Good kaiju movie with neat looking monster suits and an interesting story. Quite a spectacular battle at the end. 6/10

52. Carrie (1976) Streaming Amazon
A shy, bullied high school senior is given a chance to fit in but because of a malicious prank she is embarrassed instead. I haven't seen this since the theatrical run and was pleased to see that it held up very well, most likely due to a very strong cast and good script. 7/10
53. House (1985)* Blu-Ray
A writer moves into his deceased aunt's huge Victorian mansion which is rumored to be haunted. Enjoyable horror-comedy has a few little scares and some funny bits with one or two good looking creatures and several kind of silly ones. 5/10
54. Salvage (2006)* (Echo Bridge 4 Film Horror Collector's Set 67909)
A young woman has reoccurring vivid visions of being brutally murdered by man she's never seen before. Even though there are a couple of good twists in the plot there just isn't enough story here for a film. The movie moves slowly and the actors just aren't good enough to keep it interesting. 4/10

After being raped and murdered by soldiers, a mother and her daughter-in-law, whose husband is off fighting, become demons vowing to drink the blood of all samurai. The husband returns a hero and a samurai and is assigned to destroy the monster which is killing samurai. An interesting situation and lots of atmospheric scenes in a bamboo grove make for s very good film. 6.5/10
56. Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1968)* (Severin The Blood Island Collection) Blu-Ray
A government scientist, a beautiful woman looking for her father, and a young man returning home land on Blood Island and have to face chlorophyll created horrors. Fast moving with neat looking monsters and tasteful touches of gore and nudity, this is drive-in entertainment at it's best. 6/10
57. The Torture Chamber of Doctor Sadism (1967)* (Severin Hemisphere Horrors) Blu-Ray
Count Regula is drawn and quartered for torturing and killing a dozen young women; 35 years later he returns to destroy the ancestors of those who condemned him. Standard gothic horror basic plot but a very weird movie. Lots of bizarre, often atmospheric scenes, a castle full of traps, a pit with a pendulum, and an 18th century lab set among other things. Surprised that I liked it so much. 6/10

A high school football star is bitten by a werewolf during a trip to Romania and has to deal with his monthly transformations and the fact that he hasn't aged when he returns home decades later. Interesting take on werewolves and full of silly humor some of which I thought was pretty funny, even if some of it, like the political humor, is dated. 5.5/10
59. Dream No Evil (1970)* (Arrow American Horror Project 2) Blu-Ray
A young woman, orphaned as a child and currently working with a faith healer, believes that she has found her father in a small desert town. Well made, quiet horror film with a strong cast and one huge flaw. A narrator reveals critical story information which would have been much more effective if the viewer had figured it out on their own. 5/10
60. Grave of the Vampire (1972)* Streaming Amazon
A vampire rapes a student and she bears a son who she feeds with her own blood. Years later the grown son seeks vengeance on his father. The opening graveyard scene is great and the end is petty good as well. In between is an interesting, sometimes eerie, film with a slightly different take on vampires. 6/10
61. Garden of the Dead (1972)* Streaming Amazon
Convicts killed during an attempted prison break rise from their graves as formaldehyde fueled zombies. Shot quick and cheap as the second feature for Grave of the Vampire this isn't bad at all. The zombies look OK and a few story quirks make it interesting. Short running time also helps. 4.5/10

A killer wearing the school mascot's costume begins killing co-ed's during a sorority scavenger hunt. Mundane slasher movie with little tension or variety in the deaths. The end is pretty good though. 5/10
63. Video Violence (1987)* (The Basement - Retro 80s Horror Collection)
In a small town, a couple from New York City open a video rental store but some very disturbing tapes end up in their return bin. Decent story with some cheesy gore and over the top acting. Not to be taken too seriously but it runs way too long before the predictable payoff. 4/10
64. Cannibal Campout (1988)* (The Basement - Retro 80s Horror Collection)
Four college students go camping in a very remote forest area (which is really kind of a pit) and find only trouble. Basic city folk vs inbred locals in the woods plot. The acting is low level but there are times when tension is built up very well and it ends up being a very cheesy and icky gore fest. 5/10

A knife wielding maniac terrorizes the city and threatens to disrupt a scientist's experiments with suspended animation. There's a lot going on in the entertaining Columbia B movie including a gathering of greedy heirs, a seance, secret passages and an odd final scene. Bela has a decent sized part as a turban wearing servant. 5.5/10
66. Horror of Dracula (1958) Blu-Ray
Dracula vs Van Helsing in this Hammer classic. Great cast, some good atmosphere and the rich Hammer period feel make this one of my favorite Dracula and Hammer movies. 8/10
67. Count Dracula's Great Love (1973)* Blu-Ray
Four women and a man take refuge in an old sanitarium after their coach breaks down and the driver is killed. Paul Naschy plays a wistful, almost vulnerable Dracula, in this sometimes slow moving story. There are some really creepy scenes and the end was unexpected. 5/10

68. Troll (1986)*
An evil troll tries to convert an apartment building into part of fairyland so he can begin his conquest of humans. Lighter than it sounds with a kid hero and some nifty looking creatures. Story is just so-so and there are some well known stars but many don't have much to do. 5/10
69. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) (A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection) Blu-Ray
Freddy returns and kills off the last of the Elm Street children but wants more blood and finds a way to get it. Some impressive, grisly dreams in this one with good special effects all around. 6/10
70. Dolls (1987)* Streaming Amazon
During a storm, a couple and their young daughter take refuge in an old mansion owned by a doll maker and his wife. An charming look at childhood with lots of neat doll effects that still hold up and several creepy scenes that produce a scare or two. I really enjoyed this. 7/10

3. The Fly (1986) - Finally completing one of my blindspots as I'd only ever seen small bits of this. This was very good. And honestly less gross than I expected.

4. Neon Maniacs - Interesting. It got pretty fun in the second half. Good solid first 15 minutes to get you into it. Above average kinda cheesy.

6. Deadtectives - Often a little slower than it should be, but some good fun overall. The finale is where it is the best, but they should have gotten to those ideas earlier.
7. Hostel III - I remembered this being less visceral than the first two. Still not something I feel the need to watch again any time soon. Pacing is off, and I was honestly just done with it by the time the climax came around.

10. Fun Size - This is just a fun family little rump that takes place on Halloween. Nothing scary and just lighthearted fun. Nothing memorable, but not a bad way to waste 90 minutes.
11. Dead House - This is a short movie that still feels like it is too long. It just takes forever in the lead up. Just dwells on the really unpleasant people in the setup for far too long.
12. The Covenant - Had a lot of potential. But boy was this boring.
