Well, I nabbed the REC collection during Shout's new sale. Also got the Humanoids from the Deep steel.

On the theme of werewolf movies, I recently saw and enjoyed one of the more unusual spins on the genre (poster spoil-hidden for size):
Spoiler:

As you can tell by the poster, it's not supposed to be a frightening movie (though there is gore and mutilation). And it leans more art-house than horror. For those who look at the Rotten Tomatoes score, this one is sitting at 95%. It's certainly a movie you need to be patient with ... for the first 30 minutes, there's nothing horror-related at all (and you may be thinking you've made a mistake and starting watching a Brazilian lesbian romance/drama movie instead). But it really picks up once the werewolf elements of the story are introduced (it's almost like two completely different movies). And yes, the poster is correct ... there are a few musical numbers that just come out of nowhere

Correction, that might actually go to Night of Something Strange which had no good characters, horrible acting, and just disgusting. So glad I stopped getting HorrorPack with these "exclusive". Rather just buy the exclusives I want.

But that's just my take on it. I actually preferred original Phantasm Reggie than the one in the later movies. In the first movie, he was a loyal friend and pretty cool guy. It wasn't until the sequels he became this horn dog he eventually turned into...
The charm is, he doesn't get the girl lol. 100% sleazy. But still a really funny actor and shocked he didn't get more roles.

Also, I just watched Tigers Are Not Afraid (an upcoming theme discussion movie and a Shudder exclusive at the moment) and really thought it was outstanding. It's right around the top of my list of best first-time views so far. It reminded me of Pan's Labyrinth in how it overlaid a girl's fantasy with real-world horrors.

So I caught Blood (1973) on Prime for yesterday's theme after misplacing my Werewolf Blu-ray. I don't think I've ever heard so much dialogue crammed into a 69 minute movie. Not to mention a werewolf, vampire, man-eating plant, deformed mutants, etc. Then I realized it was from Andy Milligan.

I recently made that mistake with Fulci's City of the Living Dead. Rebought it under "The Gates of Hell" after falling for the glow in the dark slipcover release (with Psycho from Texas) that Dark Force put out. It's supposedly taken from a "35mm drive-in print", and looks just as bad as you might expect.

Aside from the generic answer of the original Halloween (and H3), I rarely miss Suspiria. This year I'll catch it a few days after the challenge since the UHD release drops in November.

I finally just finished Suspiria and was VERY disappointed. I like the music and the mood (probably why I enjoy Rob Zombie because, while the writing is bad, he can at least set the mood and can deliver a good soundtrack to his film), I felt it wasn't as scary as what I've read about. Am I missing something maybe?

I watched this due to your comment... I'm not quite sure what to make of it but enjoyed it enough to add others of his oeuvre to my Amazon watchlist. If you didn't watch with subtitles you missed lots of fun stuff describing the on screen action. Things like "Schmacken der Luger" and "Rolling pin to the head" and "Swing and a miss."

I felt the same way the first time I caught it, especially after the goofy bat scene. And the plot's a bit incoherent. But after the second viewing I just "got it". It's everything from the ultra-stylized design, the cinematography, the aesthetics of the red color scheme that make it feel like a painting come to life, the overall atmosphere, the three mothers mythology, Goblin soundtrack.... the whole package. There's just nothing like it.

This movie reminded me a lot of Feast (2005) which is a favorite of mine.

I love the original show and for some reason missed the features for all these years . I saw Bordello Of Blood (1996) for the first time last year but didn't enjoy it near as much. Haven't seen the remaining Tales From The Crypt feature Ritual (2002). Has anyone seen it? Is it worth seeking out?
Demon Knight is a lot of fun and Billy Zane elevates it that much more. Always thought he should have been a bigger star.

I will def admit there really isn't much like it. Visually, it is amazing. Sound wise, superb. Could use more spooks and scares, though, as well as dancing (one reason I really enjoyed Black Swan). Curious how the remake is as the trailers did look really good.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

This is a rough week for me. I had to stay late for work Monday, have my regular Tuesday night piano lesson, and then have to stay late for work again Wednesday. I really need to pick up the pace considering I will have two or three days where my viewing is extremely limited later in the month. I might try to take a couple of days off next week if things open up enough at work. Still chugging along, though. I caught The House That Screamed and completed a TV entry. If I can keep getting at least two in a day, that gives me something to work with on the weekend to keep a pace for 100. That being said, this is the first year that I've felt all right with the idea of not making it to 100 or completing any of the extra stuff. I'm trying to keep up with themes, but I've barely looked at the names on the checklist.

I think Night of Something Strange might be the most disappointing horror film I've seen in a long time. I cannot tell if that's because it looked promising to me and was horrible; or if it was just really really horrible regardless of expectations.

It had a very promising premise. Could have been like Contracted but it just completely bombed. Acting and script was just awful.

Anyone else watching any of the Showa-era Godzilla movies that TCM has been going through (from the Criterion collection prints)? Those movies, especially the Ishiro Honda-directed ones, are some of my favorites from my childhood. I still have a few of them stored on the DVR. When I just finish a dark and depressing horror movie and need something to brighten my mood they cheer me up. Godzilla and the leader of Planet X put it well:

I haven’t seen them on TCM, but I have watched some of the Toho Showa era films this month. I’ve watched Godzilla Raids Again, Rodan, Varan The Unbelievable, and The H Man so far. I’ve also watched a couple Showa era Gamera films on Amazon Prime.

I’m on a good pace to hit 100 for the first time in quite a few years this year. I just hit the halfway point with a decent vampire movie on FXM, Devils Of Darkness.

Nice ... that's on my Amazon Prime Watch List for the month. I don't think I've seen it before, but sometimes these movies all blur together (and it's only after I start watching that I say to myself "Oh yeah ... I've seen this before").

Awesome!

I'm only at 10. Technically, I'm at 8.5 because 3 of those are one hour TV shows... and it also includes a Wild Card (a haunted house).

Oh well. did you expect any different?

Not quite sure I'm ready for the hood yet, but I've got the first 2 of them out of the way... I just wish they'd varied the little guy's lines a bit.

Final reminder the winner of the first trivia question will be revealed tonight (possibly a little later than usual). It's not too late if you haven't gotten your entry in yet. As usual I'll take them right up until the last minute.

Just don't in expecting anything even remotely like the original. It's a 2 and a half hour slooooooow burn.

Very nice.

Hitting my goal of 150 isn't looking too good at the moment, but with some time off coming next week I'm still giving it a shot.
