Ask this again next year and maybe, just maybe I can recommend a hot new book from a first time author... me. Yup, I am trying to write a book, more mystery thriller than horror. It's definitely cutting into my movie/TV watching this year.

I got my wife interested in the Psycho series this week. We have been watching a different Psycho movie each passing day. ( Pat myself on the back for that ).
Were up to number 3 tonight. Although I don't like 3 that much. Probably going to skip to 4 instead.

Totally agree. It's creepy and very effective. I took it on vacation one year and was happy I had the free time to power through it.

So far these are the best films I've seen this challenge (no order): White God, Demon, The Lure, Who's Watching Oliver?, Lovely Molly

I have been disappointed by Brightburn, Sleepwalkers, and (to a lesser degree) Child's Play (2019)

Personally I would count these. I know that 'thrillers' have been allowed and the same logic might apply.That is exciting, like Spiderbite and Trevor I'd be curious to hear more. I've sometimes thought about trying to write a book but couldn't ever get ideas to gel or think of a solid starting point. Good luck.

Der Fan is pretty great - but I've seen it a few times now and it's worth re-watching but didn't strike me as hard as it had the first time. If I kept track of 'really great noteworthy semi-illicit films everyone must see before they die' it would be on it but instead of raving over how great some of these sleazeball classics are I'm limiting myself to what seemed powerful in the moment. You make some interesting points in the discussion thread I'm milling over and can respond there.

It's been a mixed bag for me lately.

PLEDGE -I wasn't sure about this film at first, but it turned out to be well worth watching. The protagonists are three nerds who try to pledge a fraternity, but their pledge weekend turns out to involve more torture than they counted on. There's a twist toward the end of the film that that you can see coming if you pay attention. I definitely recommend checking it out

ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE-This movie combine my 3 favorite genres: musicals, zombies, and Christmas. Terrific songs and a fresh-faced cast plus zombie gore make this a holiday perennial. I hope this comes out on Blu-Ray in time for Christmas.

THE DEAD DON'T DIE. Jim Jarmusch can be a mixed bag, but this movie is terrible. The movie constantly winks at the audience, like reveaing that Adam Driver's character has a Star Wars keyring, throwing in Brechtian reminders that we are watching a work of fiction ("How do you know what's going to happen? I read the script."), which destroyed my involvement with the characters. The cast is fantastic, but this fails as satire and as a zombie film. His vampire movie is a masterpiece, and this . . . isn't.

Zombies are my favourite subgenre so I was looking forward to a huge binge day today.. The Dead Don't Die is the worst movie I've seen all year and followed by another bad movie, I had no energy to watch any more for the entire day. Bleh.

17. The Dead Don't Die (2019) 3/10
A small town tries to survive a zombie invasion. An extremely awkward and not funny at all zombie 'comedy' that feels like it will never end. It got worse and worse as it went on, repeating jokes over and over that weren't funny in the first place and some weird meta 'humour' that adds nothing and isn't amusing. None of the cast are funny or bring anything to the film, though Tilda Swinton looks a lot like Gollum. The 'consumerism' angle is nearly interesting but it is just used superficially. There is no tension or suspense or terror either, and the only good thing there is to say about it is that it's not a loud ear-piercing screaming zombie film, and is pleasantly quiet.

18. The Dark (2018) 4/10
An undead young girl, preying on passerby's in a forest, befriends a blind boy. The opening scene was pretty great, and had me hooked, and then it all just fizzled away. The makeup was not very good and pretty distracting for both characters, and they themselves were really uninteresting. There were some interesting ideas about trauma and abuse and 'coming back to the light', but it wasn't done very well, it never goes deep enough and the characters' journeys are pretty forgettable. The pacing is sluggish and it's quite boring. It was also really dark, so dark that at times its difficult to tell what is even happening on screen.

I've had a couple of nice surprises over the past few days. I usually don't care for found footage movies but since Hell House LLC is on Prime and I remembered reading some good things about it in previous challenges I gave it a try and liked it. There are some good scares and things make sense and the shaky-cam footage (which I dislike) isn't that bad.

I've been working through the Leprechaun series, most of which I haven't seen, over the past couple of challenges and this year Leprechaun 4: In Space was up. I usually don't like silly movies but for some reason I got a lot of laughs out of this one and really enjoyed it. Maybe it was the mood I was in or something. I liked the cheesy effects and the little nods to other films.

Just finished One Cut of the Dead (2017) and it was a lot of fun. I wanna say more, but don't want to spoil it for anyone that hasn't seen it. I'll have to watch it again next year and see how it holds up.

Are we counting Joker as horror? I thought I saw it in the list of theater movies out in the list here, but not 100% certain.

Best movie I've seen so far has to be Ghost Story though the ending was...not my favorite part. Any good movies anyone can recommend on Amazon Prime, Vudo (or whatever it is that you add movie codes to), Hulu and Netflix that are must watch?

The zombie felt like the least fake thing about The Dark. It annoys me when films spend so much of their time setting up an elaborate plot device then acting like it's somehow metaphorical when they've taken so many liberties to get there it blunts any symbolism ending up commenting more on some awkward version of trauma specific to one film than anything universal. The Dark started interesting but the blindness seemed like too much in an already far out story - almost oversimplifying things with not enough subtlety.

How should I be counting the new Creepshow series? Just watched the first two episodes tonight! Feel like the "with commercials" thing in the rules is antiquated when it comes to streaming services.
