The challenge has officially begun. Yay! Yet also some shock. Wow. It's here. Been super busy the last few weeks with work and have had car problems, including after work on the 13th, but hoping for a good month.
One big change for me this challenge is in the last 6 months, I've really gotten into growing, and this is prime growing time. Everyone keeps asking me how I'm going to keep up with all my plants and the challenge. We'll see, but I don't think my plants will require much more than 40 minutes per day. Not too bad. I've got a lot going on between fruit trees, vegetables, flowers, various potted plants, a giant pumpkin plant that is just starting to take off and a growing collection of carnivorous plants. Luckily, the weather has been cooperative lately. Just enough rain to allow me to not have to water so much.
I started things last night with a longtime favorite, Beetlejuice. I still love it. Been a long time since I had seen it. Then I finished up with Green Room. I had forgotten just how tense that movie is. Great first night of viewing.
I'm really debating how much to follow the themes this year. It's like I don't feel like being boxed in this year. I'll just see what stands out when I get home from work.

For today’s theme, I watched another Criterion movie from the Criterion Channel. I decided on House from 1977. I’d seen it once before when Hulu had Criterion movies, but hadn’t watched it in years. I still enjoyed it.

One thing I love about this time period is the yearly influx of returning DVDTalkers. Seeing a couple/few of them pop up each day like clockwork (or Clckworang) in the list thread feels like a mass migration. Some of them have never posted in dvdtalk except for the one yearly list post.

I started with somewhat of a cheesefest. First up was The Crater Lake Monster (1977) followed by Land of the Minotaur (1976).
The Crater Lake Monster is a cheesy SF monster movie featuring a plesiosaur that's constantly called a dinosaur (it's not - dinosaurs all lived on land, the plesiosaur lives in water). It's pretty bad - but in a 50s sort of SF monster movie way. I think I've seen it before but am not sure. It's in a set of 12 Crown movies from BCI and has a pretty good anamorphic WS transfer.
Land of the Minotaur wasn't much better and pretty much wastes the talents of Donald Pleasence and Peter Cushing (you get the impression they took the jobs for the vacation in Greece where it was filmed). The Minotaur is a statue that breaths fire. It doesn't move but at least looks like it should. I'd hoped for better but... It's in that same set as Crater Lake... and also has a decent anamorphic WS transfer.

I've had some pretty good progress. Like Joe29, I've been laid up sick, but planted myself firmly on the couch with the TV on and horror movies in queue. I figure this cold has another week to go...
Crawl has been the best first-time viewing I've had so far. It was a blast.

I went through half of Crystal Lake Memories on 9/13 and resumed it this morning. As they were discussing part 7 (The New Blood), there was a reference to Susan Jennifer Sullivan, who played Melissa, passing away years before. Since she was young, I started searching for a cause and while IMDB/Wikipedia lists the date of death, there's not much else provided. However, there are other forums where folks are saying this information is incorrect. She's actually alive, and perhaps just wanting to be left alone. Anyone else hear of this news or have additional information? It's a little strange and has me curious.

Not off to a great start...
1. Midsommar (2019) 5/10
After a traumatic event, a young woman and her partner travel to Sweden for a mid-summer festival that happens every 90 years. The film starts off strong, building some pretty great tension and dread - even just in a simple long-take phone call - but around the halfway point it becomes obvious the film doesn't really know what it wants to be. It drags on far too long, and all that dread that it was building up slowly turns into boredom. Florence Pugh's performance is great and her character is interesting, her crumbling relationship with the douchebag boyfriend is genuinely sad and frustrating to watch, but none of it seems to have any relevance to the festival, which just seems like a cheap take on The Wicker Man, and the ending almost turns it into a pathetic revenge film.
2. Konchû daisensô (1968) 5/10 (theme night: Criterion)
After a swarm of insects takes down an American fighter plane, scientists and soldiers try to find the reason for the insects' attack. Though this gave the impression it was going to be Godzilla with insects, it ends up being something of a cross between Matango and Phase IV. It takes itself super seriously in its attempts to be an anti-war film, but combined with the terrible acting, bad dubbing and silly effects it comes across as a bit of a joke, and nothing more than a bad low budget film. Phase IV would later do a much better (though still not great) job at turning insects into peace-wanting destroyers. The abrupt ending was also pretty hilarious.

I started the challenge today with Hereditary since that one has been taunting me on Amazon Prime for a while now. I really liked it - very creepy from start to finish with a few shocks along the way and well acted. Now on to cats and dogs, starting with The Black Cat (1966) and The Blood Drinkers, the movie it was paired with when it was released. Dogs will come later from Prime.
And I just got my order from Diabolik which was motivated by their Blue Underground sale. VERY cool 3-D cover on the Maniac limited edition.

I've heard plenty of these since I got into it. Luckily, they don't clamor for me to feed them; they find food all on their own.
Sorry, wasn't completely sure how to resize.

Didn't the last girl from the very first Friday the 13th get overwhelmed by the reaction? Isn't that why she's in so little of the second? I might be remembering wrong.

I think they actually blindsided her with her death. She agreed to do the movie without a script. I read an article where she showed up to film her scenes without realizing they had already filmed the main parts of the movie. But, she did have a fan stalk her after the first movie's release.

I’ve only seen half of that 12 pack iirc, need to finish it some October.
That sounds right. Buried in my “multi-pack” bookcase behind a bunch of comics, so I might not get to it this year.

Yep. That's it. Looking it up I find I purchased it back in 2012 and have never made time for it. That *will* be corrected this year as my overall goal is to watch only stuff in my unopened pile. If I do that I'll pretty much wipe it out.

Looks like alyxstarr was able to come through with links for some of the more obscure titles this year. Thanks, alyx!
