Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Whoa, looks like Severin's giving Vinegar Syndrome a run for their money with their October releases:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/G6HwlXBggcI" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And, of course, I received a shipping notification from 88 Films saying Paganini Horror is on the way not even a week ago. Oh well, at least I'll be able to catch it for the Donald Pleasence theme on 10/5.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

I was looking at the October schedule for my local arthouse theater and was reminded that Joe Bob Briggs is doing a live show there near the beginning of the month. Too bad it looks like it will only have the faintest tinges of being horror-related. (It's on the history of rednecks as told through movies. It does include "why the redneck is the scariest monster in all of film history, with visual evidence." )

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

I've got my 100 movies picked out and plugged into the Checklist and Subset and Themes. If my luck holds out I should be able to finish all three. It is a lot of movies to watch, I have never understood how people can watch anything over 120. My mind would be mush by the end of the month. Around 106 has been my high in the past. I don't think I can do it again so I am planning only 100. I do have some backup movies in mind if they are possible.

Here's the 2019 checklist table. As always, it and the theme/subset hybrid can be found on post 2 of this thread, the first post of the list thread, and the first post which directs to this link. And don't forget the wiki.

I'll eventually slap a spoiler tag on this one because I get OCD about updating them all, that is, if they need an update.

The theme/subset hybrid table is being finalized and coming very soon.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

The Basil Gogos link in the checklist is broken, his estate must be clamping down on things because I didn't readily see a great replacement link.

Here are some possible alternate links:

Edit: Responding to below, very cool - I'd never heard of Wayback Machine. Thanks, coyoteblue.

The whole site seems to be down. The last time the Wayback
Machine crawled the site was early April. Nothing since then.

However, via the Wayback Machine:

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Fixed. Thanks for catching that.

And since you brought up the Wayback Machine, a reminder that full Fangoria issues are available there for free:

https://archive.org/details/fangoria...%22&sort=-date

Also for the new Fango 2.0 there's Fangoria Bonus Pages from Birth. Movies. Death.:

https://birthmoviesdeath.com/fangoria-bonus-pages

And you don't have to be a subscriber.

Spoiler:
If you missed last week’s week’s announcement, today kicks off a week of Fango Bonus Pages at BMD: articles that were bumped for space, or articles with embargos that rendered them untenable for our quarterly print schedule, but pieces which I very much enjoyed commissioning and reading, and which I now am pleased to present to the BMD audience.

Today’s article (originally scheduled for FANGORIA #1 in October) digs into the best Hong Kong horror filmmaker you’ve never heard of. (Yeah, yeah, I know you have; I mean that other person.) Chih-Hung Kuei is a filmmaker who made dozens of films for the Shaw Brothers in the ‘70s and ‘80s, yet most of his films remain obscurities in the West. Though some of his titles are known to hardcore cinephiles, most of his films aren’t even listed on Wikipedia.

Fango contributor Simon Abrams (who penned our fantastic oral history of The Brood in the latest issue) does an amazing job of shining a light on this underseen director, and in explaining just why his films were so special. I was gutted to have to cut this article from our inaugural issue, but I’m excited to present it here to kick off this partnership between FANGORIA and BMD. - Phil Nobile Jr.

Anyone get a chance to catch any of the new Creepshow series on Shudder yet? Wasn't sure if I was gonna catch it during the challenge or not and just wanted some feedback beforehand. The trailer looked a bit on the cheap side even though Greg Nicotero's involved. I was already let down by their "Critters: A New Binge" series (that should've been a movie), which obviously suffered from no Chiodo Brothers involvement among other things.

I thought it was decent. There's few nods to the original two movies and Stephen King in general.

I still haven't seen Creepshow 3 so I don;t have that to compare it to.

Thanks, I'll go into it with zero expectations and try not to compare it to the first two films. I've never caught the third one either and don't really care to.

Just made a slight alteration to the anniversary category on the checklist and added the 40th anniversary of Svengoolie (portrayed by Rick Koz) with this link:

It’s hard to believe we start Monday night. I am going to get myself in the mood this weekend, since it is possible I’ll be too busy on Tuesday to get much viewing in.

With how gloomy and cloudy it is where I'm at, wishing it started now. I'm actually really excited as I've been working from home for the past month or so and don't see it changing for a while. Plan is to knock out TV shows like Twilight Zone and Tales from the Darkside when I'm a bit busy doing work and when it is slow, waiting on calls, to switch on a movie. I got baby/kid sitting duties on Monday night, so probably the first movie on deck will be A Nightmare Before Christmas.

Is there anything really good on Shudder for October and can one get that on the PS4?

I"ve been reading Arrow's Blair Witch Project book, and the guy mentioned 2019 is the 20 year anniversary of both Blair Witch and The Sixth Sense.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 15th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Here's the 2019 themes/subset hybrid table. Like previously mentioned, it and the checklist table will eventually be found on post 2 of this thread, the first post of the list thread, and the first post which directs to this link. And don't forget the wiki.

Both are ready to copy/paste into your list. Links to the subset threads are all active. Spoilers have a bunch of time killers including full films that correspond with their respective theme. And every theme/subset has a specific reason for being on that particular day - a holiday, an event, release date, etc. I do not take responsibility for any negative side effects brought on by the shitty taglines. Enjoy.

* Only One Theme Required to Complete.

Spoiler:
From the book "Heavy Metal Movies" by Mike "McBeardo" McPadden:

Freddy Krueger directs Evil Ed from Fright Night (he was also Wendell Tvedt in Fraternity Vacation) in a gimmicky, effects-heavy fright flick about Satan possessing callers by means of a " horror-scope" telephone line. The ring-dings include our bedraggled teen nerd hero, who soon turns into a purple-faced demon hell-bent on wasting his bully tormentors.

Upon release, 976-EVIL was a relative disappointment. A quarter century later, the VHS special is an automatic blast back to an extremely specific, knuckleheaded headbanger past. Aside from Robert Englund (yes, Freddy) behind the camera and Stephen Geoffreys (the aforementioned Ed/Wendell) in the lead, 976-EVIL traffics in rubber monsters, sticky gore, Satanic Panic, Spencer Gifts-ish punk chicks, and, in its every moment, the look and feel of an MTV hair metal video.

Besides all that, the central plot device is a pay-per-minute call-in number for a dubious entertainment service hustled hard via late-night TV ads. Circa 1988, these semi-scams were everywhere, offering prerecorded messages from teen idols, scandal queens, pro wrestlers, rappers, Howard Stern, and no dearth of metal bands, including Kiss (of course) and Warrant. There were also 900-number Heavy Metal Movie spin-offs such as the Freddy Krueger line, where he'd tell you a scary story, and a Bill and Ted touch-tone time-travel game that touted the Wyld Stallyns van as a grand prize. I'd love to meet the winner.

976-EVIL generated a useless 1992 sequel, and the Deftones recorded the 2010 tribute "976-EVIL".

Heavy Trip was released on VOD on this day in 2018.

For those who get Folk TV, I see Thriller is on early Sunday mornings, and for people who have MeTV, iirc, it is also on early Monday mornings, late Sunday nights.

I loved the first two [REC] movies but never saw the 3rd and 4th so I plan to watch those during this challenge as well. I bought the set from Amazon a few months ago so I'm all set.

I haven't seen any of them but I've heard good things. I'm glad that one was picked as a subset, finally giving me the motivation to check them out.

I also ordered Arrow's new release of The Hills Have Eyes 2 in case I'm having too much fun during the challenge and want to punish myself.

Does anyone stream Shudder via Amazon's PS4 app? Looking at their movies and price, I'm certainly open to giving the streaming service a shot for the first time this Challenge. But not if it's a PITA (I don't have a Roku or any of the other official supported systems for Shudder, and don't want to have to connect my laptop to my tv). In theory, it seems I should be able to watch everything Shudder has through Amazon Prime's interface. Has anyone tried?

Got the same question. Just got a PS4 to stream anything or a laptop/iPhone and I really don't like using those things as the volume sucks.
