I know that it's not the right time to mention this, but if I don't do it now, I'll forget about it.

Any interest in adding "kaiju/giant monster" to the checklist? With the Criterion set streeting at the end of the month, it seems like we ought to show Godzilla and his brethren some love.

I'll be announcing the next round of themes to make the cut tomorrow. I *think* that'll be the last one before entering the final [elimination] round.

I personally can't wait for that set, so sounds good to me. Added to post 10.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

One returning for the first time since 2010 and the other a new addition ... former was unanimous...

1. Thorn EMI/HBO Cannon/HBO Video, 2 has been chosen for the 1980's Video Companies Spotlight.

2. Nothing was chosen. (Australia / New Zealand only)

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

The next round of themes to make the cut...

NEW
  • R.I.P. John Carl Buechler (1952 - 2019)
  • Horror Movies in Horror Movies*
  • Playgrounds of the Damned
  • Heavy Metal Movies
  • April Ghouls' Day - Deadly Pranks
  • Litterboxd Devil Dogs (Cats & Dogs)

RETURNING
  • Joe Bob Briggs
  • Home Invasion (last used 2013)

R.I.P. John Carl Buechler, Horror Movies in Horror Movies, and Playgrounds of the Damned were in a 3-way tie for first.

* A reminder for Horror Movies in Horror Movies - Since there's still not been a proper list found and compiling our own list would be a huge endeavor, this is your best bet...

Go to IMDB.com and select horror film --> Click "More" ---> Click "Connections" ---> Click "Featured In" (ex: NOTLD)

_________________________________________

Another reminder voting is still happening. We have four spots left to fill and that will be determined in the final round ...the elimination round. Tomorrow.

I've been sllloooowwwly pulling together a "starting point" list of these. There are probably hundreds more out there, but this gives people some options without having to do the work themselves.
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls048421199/

Eventually I'll add a note to each listing what movie(s) are watched within each movie on the list; in the meantime, you should be able to find most of them on the Connections page for each under "Features" (e.g., The Blob features Dementia). Caveat emptor: This is mostly based on those Connections pages, which of course are crowd-sourced and prone to at least some inaccuracies, so no guarantees that any particular movie on the list actually has a character watching the "featured" horror movie.

And while I'm at it, I also added last year's subset picks to my IMDb master list of all subset films:
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls029042594/

This one might come in handy for anyone using advanced searches on IMDb to come up with subset suggestions, because you can exclude lists of titles from your search by adding "&lists=![list ID]". For instance, if you're trying to come up with horror movies released in 1994 for the chronological face-off but don't want to worry about comparing against the whole list of already-used titles, you could use this search:
https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?t...2594&count=100

And you can even mix and match lists to include with lists to exclude in the same search. So here's all the "horror movies featuring other horror movies," minus the ones that have already been used as subset picks:
https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?l...9,!ls029042594

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Curiously 'Return to Oz' is on the Heavy Metal Horror list and IMDB lists 'horror' as a subgenre in the middle of the page. I'd never thought about Return to Oz as horror, but is it 'safe' to use? Return to Oz is one film I'd been curious to revisit.

Thank you so much! I've been scouring the net trying to find a suitable list since adding it last year. Everything from Letterboxd to Mubi to the IMDB ...practically every list site out there.

Also added the subset master list to post 4 as another option. It's always nice to have an accompanying pic to go along with the title.

I definitely remember it being pure nightmare fuel when watching it as a kid.

  • Till Death Do Us Part - Wedding Horrors

  • Frights, Camera...Traction!
  • Random Maniacal Mashup of Insane Indecisiveness 2 - TV Terrors / Late-Night Horror Hosts / Aerobics Craze / Casinos
  • R.I.P. John Carl Buechler (1952 - 2019)
  • Horror Movies in Horror Movies
  • Playgrounds of the Damned
  • Heavy Metal Movies
  • April Ghouls' Day - Deadly Pranks
  • Litterboxd Devil Dogs (Cats & Dogs)

Hey Chad, it might just be my phone, but the link for the 2018 subset list on the first page is just taking me to the main forum.

Yeah, I don't know what's going on there. There's been quite a few complaints about it not loading properly on iPhones. I tried on my Android phone and it seems alright for the most part. Only problem is I can't scroll left to right when viewing the theme/subset and checklist tables in spoiler tags on posts 2 - 6, so I can't view them in their entirety. This forum is definitely not mobile-friendly, that's for sure.
