Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

And if you're looking to stock up on titles, and maybe missed (or not) the recent Vinegar Syndrome, Severin, RoninFlix, Mondo Macabro, Diabolik, etc. sales, don't forget these are still ongoing...

Full Moon 4th of July Sale (ends 7/8) Burn some Evergreen credit.

Three Arrow sales...

Arrow 10th anniversary BOGO sale

Zavvi Arrow Bogo BOGO sale (unfortunately now charging sales tax in many states)

Both extended until 8/4, I think 7/15.

B&N 50% off Arrow Video sale (coupons work, unlike the current Criterion 50% off sale)

Also a Raro Video 50% off Weekend sale (code 9PT96CE), Grindhouse Video Clearance sale, and Twilight Time Hot July Sale (Twilight Time and ScreenArchives).

I’m having my usual problem where this thread just hates my tablet/browser. So I may not post here again, but I’ll take a subset and I instantly vote for everything that will decide the final outcomes fastest.

If you'll have me, I'll take a subset!

I'm optimistic that I'll be able to participate more after barely taking part last year, but who knows how things will actually work out. However, I have a new TV, the baby is sleeping through the night, and work isn't as insane, so I have a good feeling about this year!

Added 5 out of the 7. I'd already added horror of war from your previous suggestion in the planning thread, and we covered 'Psychic Abilities / ESP' in 2013. And yes, I had to check. It's getting hard to remember what we have/haven't done at this point.

14 down ...17 to go.

I had a hair-pulling experience when trying to post this thread. Felt like throwing my computer out the window, and that was a desktop. Why is this forum always wonky?

Yes, my first post back resulted in a complete crash, followed by a hard restart. I think everything is back to normal.

I'm in for a subset pick. Also plan to host a copy of the subset films again, as long as life doesn't intervene. (Though I may opt to disseminate the links a different way, like through PM/email, since I did receive a DMCA takedown notice for one of last year's links.)

We've now crossed the halfway point for volunteers. 16 down... 15 to go.

If for whatever reason you do decide to go about it the old way, I'll be happy to remove all the links immediately after the challenge ends.

This gives me a spur-of-the-moment checklist idea that's inspired by Darth Maher's 15th anniversary suggestion involving films (subset and otherwise) that have left somewhat of, well, let's say left an indelible mark on the challenge.

Watch 1 of your OHMC "favorites":

--- The Carrier (1988) -
--- Shakma (1990) -
--- The Killer Tongue (1996) -
--- The House by the Cemetery (1981) -
--- Death Bed: The Bed That Eats (1977) -
--- Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror (1981) -
--- Hobgoblins (1988) -
--- Microwave Massacre (1983) -
--- Killer Condom (1996) -

Missing anything?

Shakma, obviously. And if you go with this checklist item, please limit it to just one film, as there are several folks on board who like to watch as many new films as possible. Also, the pain involved with watching any one of these again will be enough torture for any participant to endure.

I would say to put me down for a subset pick, but I'm not sure that I'm going to be able to participate this year. I've got a new job that starts August 1st, and I don't know how badly it's going to restructure my life yet. I'll have to give it a month or so to see if it'll leave me time for the Challenge.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

If anyone's got a LOT of spare time and a penchant for bean counting, it might also be interesting if someone could figure out the most-watched film of each Challenge (and, by that, I mean the film that appeared on participants' lists most often) and have that set of films to choose from for a checklist item. Maybe some of this work has already been done in some of the Challenge stats posts; I'm not sure.

Just a thought for those with time on their hands. (Of course, every year may end up in a 31-way tie, which would render this idea completely pointless.)

How could I possibly forget the cream of the crop? Late-night post fatigue, I guess. Coincidentally I just around to picking up the Blu, so I'm due for a rewatch. But yeah, I'll definitely limit it to one, that is, if people want it. It was just an idea.

I did include a 'most popular title' stat for a few years before retiring it, which was before retiring the results thread in 2014. I'd have to check when exactly. If anyone wants to take over from there, well, be my guest, but I'm not volunteering for that job.

Also wanted to mention the wiki is back in action. For some reason I was unable to access the thread tools option, which I'm guessing was due to some formatting issues on the first few posts.

And I'd be very appreciative if anyone wants to share the secret on how to get the text editor in Firefox to stop being greyed out.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Still looking for more theme suggestions, BTW. As I mentioned in the wiki, I'll be announcing the voting date that's coming soon.

And I've just added some new themes...

Mirrors

Agitation Cycle of Death (washing machines, laundromats, etc.)

Litterboxd Devil Dogs (Cats & Dogs)

That last one was a concoction of two older themes (cats/bats/rats, dogs/bogs/logs), and due to the influx of recent cat/dog horror releases: Uninvited, Saint Bernard, The Uncanny, Play Dead, Strays, Man's Best Friend and a few others I can't think of at the moment.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Another theme night idea: since this year marks The Blair Witch Project's 20th anniversary, how about having a day devoted to movies about film crews making movies / TV shows? Oddly enough, we've never had The Blair Witch Project as a subset pick, so that would of course be the perfect one for this, but it was actually One Cut of the Dead that got me thinking along these lines. There are lots of films that would fit the theme: The House of Seven Corpses, The Taking of Deborah Logan, Man Bites Dog, etc. Here's a list from the IMDB search engine, but some of them are suspect.

I think that the key thing that separates this theme from the "Found Footage" theme is that these films must involve a film crew.

We could call it "Frights, Camera...Traction!" Or not.

That makes for an especially good price on American Horror Project Vol. 2, but it's unfortunately out of stock online at the moment.
