12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

Guess what time of the year it is! That's right, it's the 12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge!

List Thread for 2018 is here.

Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.

3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions (theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

Audio:

Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio

I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.

If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.

1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.

1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.

3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.

1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

*Exceptions:* 1: The Tarzan films are eligible to watch and count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
2. Superhero films. If they do not have a sci-fi/fantasy tag, they count for the watch list, but not for the check list.

Finalized Checklist:
Spoiler:
*Watching enough shorts or TV to count as one entry, you can use that one entry as a check on the checklist, as long as each of them count for whatever you're checking. You can mix and match what you've seen to make a check, they all don't have to be grouped together as a single entry on your watch list.

Re: 12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

Just a couple things...1) Please let me know of any changes you'd like to see in the checklist. It was overhauled last year, but can always be changed before the start of the challenge. Anyone I should add to the "He's Dead, Jim" section, for instance?

2) This year I'm not going to hand out prizes. I know it's been a long standing tradition and GoldenWheels has been VERY generous to us, but I honestly don't have time to set it up this year. I will definitely be around for the challenge, but the end of June is going to be a busy one for me and I'll be off-line a lot in the next 7-10 days or so. (Mini-vacation and then my mom is having surgery and I am her support person for it, if you're wondering...)

Think that's it. I'll be setting up the list thread very shortly as well so people can start their planning! I'm not sure about anyone else, but I'm really looking forward to some fun watches this year!

Re: 12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

^ I am too. Already watched some. And I have a question. Planes: Fire And Rescue is playing at AirVenture Oshkosh this year. Would that count as a fantasy?

Re: 12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I'm going to go ahead and say yes without looking it up. I watched it once a long time ago and considering it's talking planes/automobiles, I think that's in the fantasy realm... :)

This is the challenge that started me on this monthly cycle of themed movie watching madness. As usual, I have more to watch than time in which to watch it! I'd have it no other way! :)

I’ve got some new DVDs I plan to watch. Including both volumes of Time Tunnel. I also got the last DVD set to complete my entire collection of Series 1 and 2, of GI Joe plus the 86 movie, the two live action movies and the two CGI movies. It deals with sci fi plots in almost every episode. Dish Network also has Lion and Vehicle Voltron and all three series of Robotech on demand.

The Time Tunnel is one of my favorite 60s SF series. So much so that I purchased a copy of the BR release when it came out. It looks excellent.

I just got the new BR of Jonny Quest - came in today. I'm not waiting till next month to watch it as it's a top 10 favorite and my favorite animated show of all time. I plan on starting it later tonight.

I also just got in a copy of the new BR of Ikarie XB 1. I'm really excited about this one and will likely make it my first viewing for the challenge. I also just got a BR upgrade copy of Minority Report, the only SF movie from Spielberg I'll willingly watch. That, too, may get an early viewing.

Can we add Michael Bay to the Directors list? That would give us a lot of additional movies to choose from.

Re: 12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I think we can get rid of Margot Kidder and David Ogden Stiers in the RIP category. They really didn't have much to begin with.

I agree about Michael Bay.

Probably...I will be home on Sat. Night and will check his filmagraphy then and make a final decision.

Any complaints about taking Stiers and the other person off the RIP list? Any additions?

Didn't see they made a blue of Jonny Quest...I will have to check that out when I get a chance.

More for RIP:

James Karen (10/23/18)
Larry Cohen (3/23/19) has 6
John Carl Buechler (3/18/19) has a bunch for makeup effects

These all look good to me.

While you are considering adding Michael Bay to the Directors list could you also consider adding Cate Blanchett to the Actors choices. She has 17 fantasy films and we can always use more female representation in the list.

I'm a bit torn on adding Bay, to be honest. He truthfully has only 2 Sci-fi/fantasy credits to his name. 1) Armageddon. 2) The Transformers series. Yes, there's like 10 Transformers movies, but that's it. It's not that diverse of a selection. If I get a lot of people chiming in that they want to add him before the challenge starts, I will, otherwise, I'm going to leave him off for now. The movies still qualify for the lists and watching, don't forget!

Am I missing things for Karen? I see the two Return of the Living Dead movies and 3 or four individual guest spots on TV shows that would likely qualify but that's it. Is that enough to include him?

Larry Cohen will be added as will John Carl Buechler.

Done.
Any other changes or suggestions? Did I miss any?

Possibly. Here are 10 movies (IMDB Advance Search) with Science Fiction tags:

And 4 more with Fantasy tags:

Thanks, I admit to being tired, but not quite sure how I missed those! I promise I did look! Seems like enough so will add him as well to the RIP section.

Part 2 of 3Below: Tales of Arcadia is being released on Netflix on June 12th.

Also season 2 of Final Space just premiered on Adult Swim (episodes will repeat on TBS). Cord cutters can pick up the season on Amazon, Vudu, etc...

Getting closer to the beginning of the challenge. Anyone have any last minute additions/changes to suggest for the check list?

Not sure what my plans are going to be for the month. Don't have a ton of new movies that qualify but it might be a good month to pull out some older TV shows. I get EW and this week's has a reunion with the Angelcast and it's totally hitting my nostalgic button. Could be a fun show to re-watch. Can't tell you when I last watched it, actually...

I whet my SF/Fantasy appetite every month. I got the new BR of Jonny Quest last week and have been watching a few episodes of that every night.

Every month is Sci-Fi/Fantasy viewing month for me :D Though I have been holding off on a few streaming movies for July.

I'm almost caught up with the Arrowverse shows on Netflix (at least the "core" shows of Arrow, Flash, Supergirl and Legends), so I should be ready to shift to weekly DVR viewing in the Fall.

Only major goal I have is to finish the (OG) Outer Limits. I nearly finished season one last year. Outside of that, it's open season.

Haven’t had many goals in these Challenges lately, as completing my ~40 item personal checklist pretty much taps me out, but I think I’ll try to finish a couple TV seasons I’ve been slowly rolling through, like the recent V and Dirk Gently.

I have just a couple hours to go until dusk before I can start the challenge...some of you may have already been able to start, so I wish you and everyone else good luck! I plan on watching something tonight, but not entirely sure what yet. I have quite a bit to chose from, though!

Dusk starts late enough 'round these parts (a little bit after nine) that I'll watch one short (60 minutes +/-) movie or watch an episode of Slayers, start the next Ace of Wands serial and call it a night.

I hear you, it's 9:30ish for me (like 9:37 or there about). I sort of thought about starting The Fellowship of the Ring but that's way too long for me to watch tonight, though since it is summer, I don't have to get up early. Leaning towards either a Harryhausen film or maybe a MST3K one.

It's 9:57 for me here so my hands are tied somewhat. I'm thinking of starting with God Told Me To on Shudder just in case it leaves in the middle of the month.

Oh! I just remembered, the checklist is now finalized. I'll update the starting post here and in the list thread with the one I posted a bit ago. I don't remember any more additions or comments though I'll double check. I'll do that right now. Was just about to pop in It Came from beneath the Sea when I realized I hadn't done that yet. Sorry!

I started the Challenge by finishing season 3 of Jessica Jones. Overall it was a satisfying ending to the series.

Re: 12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

Off to a slow start... I sort of wanted to finish the 2nd season of The Rebel I'd started last week. Didn't get it done... may do a few episodes scattered in so it's not sitting there staring me in the face all month waiting to be completed.

Still trying to decide what I want to watch first... I *did* at least get things a bit more organized this year and have all my unwatched SF/Fantasy in an easily accessible location.

i started Jessica Jones but just couldnt get into it. i watched a couple episodes of the first season.

I am going to kick it off with Star Trek the original series. i have worked my way through season one and halfway through season 2

Re: 12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I started last night with two things. I recently got a copy of the Season 1-6 set of Ancient Aliens, and have lately been working my way through Season 3 for the Historical Challenge, so I watched the last episode on Disc 2. After that I felt like listening to an episode of Coast To Coast AM, since I am a Coast Insider and get the last five years on Demand, as well as weekly Art Bell episodes with Somewhere In Time. I listened to Saturday night’s episode which dealt with Bigfoot.

Re: 12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I'm debating whether I want to use one of my wildcards on Rocketman (which I managed to catch before it gets booted from all theaters in my area for Spiderman). Even though every synopsis describes it a musical fantasy, no one lists "fantasy" as one of the genres.

My official kick-off viewing was for a Swedish movie called Border. I didn't realize until the credits that it was based on a story by the author of Let the Right One In. While I didn't find it anywhere near as engrossing as that movie, I'm certainly glad I watched it. It's a low-key build-up to the fantasy elements of the story. What starts off as a quiet drama about a Neanderthal-looking woman trying to get by in life morphs into an modern-day fantasy/fairy story about ...

I watched Star Trek Generations (1994). My plan is to watch all four of the Picard films. I historically was a snob that preferred the original series, but i have to say i really enjoyed Generations and the 'handoff' between Kirk and Picard worked for me.

Me too. Unexpected company showed up yesterday and are staying till tomorrow. Not sure if I'll get anything watched today, but hopeful for tomorrow. Also, for me, having a smaller selection really helps my decision making! It's most of the battle for me, making a decision of what exactly I want to watch!

You are a big fan of Ancient Aliens, aren't you? I think you've watched at least of a few of those episodes every year I remember!
My first watch was It Came From Beneath the Sea. Several years ago, I picked up a 3 movie set from Big Lots and that one I go back to a lot. This year, I watched one of the features and decided to finally hunt down a couple of the others that Harryhausen did, Jason and the Argonauts and the 7th Voyage of Sinbad. I also didn't realize but he did The Thief of Bagdad. It's been a long time since I watched that one, so may add that in as well.

Mine wasn't unexpected - my son and his family (3 kids, wife, and dog - a small schnauzer that's OK for a dog [I'm absolutely not a dog person]) came in a week and a half ago. They're going home this Saturday. I love seeing them but them staying at my house during the visit really puts a dent in my viewing time. It seems that every year the first week of this challenge is slow for something in that vein. A couple of years we've gone to see them, they've been here a couple of years, or other family shows up.

I think shadokitty's managed to work in episodes of that one in just about every challenge. :) If I've been keeping up correctly this looks to be the 3rd or 4th time through.

Harryhausen is one of my all-time favorites. I love Jason and the Argonauts and the Sinbad movies. His more mainstream SF and monster movies are also tops in my book. The only one I'm not that fond of is The Three Worlds of Gulliver, but I've never really cared for the story so that somewhat colors things.

I finally started last night with a long overdue viewing of my BR copy of Revenge of the Creature. I'd purchased this "day of release" and didn't open it due to the reports of botched 3D on this title (and I don't own 3D equipment - just wanting a proper, corrected, version). I got the replacement disc and opted to wait for this challenge. Last night was a good time. I also compared the new disc to the original for the 2D version and didn't notice any difference so the reports that nothing was done to fix that version are true (as I'd suspected). It looks a bit better than my DVD (the more recent single-sided disc DVD box set) except in WS (finally). I'll watch Creature Walks... or Creature from... tonight if possible.

Still deciding on just what TV show to put in rotation. I like to use those for late night viewings when I don't have time for a full movie, am too tired for a full movie, or just as a break from movies. I keep looking at Andromeda as I've only seen S1 of that, and recently as I purchased a very inexpensive S1 DVD set. I enjoyed it enough that I picked up a region free BR full series set so it's sitting there daring me to open it and start watching.

OK... I have to say it... That's a horrible name for that biopic! Every time... EVERY TIME I see the name I think of the 1999 Disney movie of the same name and have to stop and remind myself it's not that movie but the new one about Elton John.

I've decided to alternate TV days/movie days for the Challenge. The will hopefully keep me from burning out on either one and I can use the extra time to decide what movies/shows to watch the next day. Tomorrow for instance I've decided to go with a caveman double feature of Caveman (1981) and MST3K "I Was A Teenage Caveman". I've mostly got the TV stuff mapped out, Final Space, Slayers, a second Ace of Wands serial, on the Twelfth I'll start the second season of 3Below. I'm eyeballing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 2 for the later half of the month and I'll fill in any gaps with whatever catches my eye.
