Film/DVD Aficionado is shutting down 10 June 2019

I put it in the cataloging thread but I thought it deserved it's own.

They just posted on Facebook that they can't make the economics work, so shutting down on June 10.

In the upper left go to My Collection, then Export Collection to make a copy of your stuff.

Thanks for the heads-up, milo.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I KNEW that I should have been keeping an Excel spreadsheet of my collection.

It looks like doing an export will help me build one without having to do too much extra work.

Still...damn.

I stopped updating my collection about a year ago because I’d heard that they’d had data loss issues that led to titles just disappearing. I’d been meaning to catalogue everything in excel because I figured they’d eventually fold. Sad, because I really liked this service. I liked how easily you could share a link to your collection.

Active member since 2005 Though since my purchasing of physical media has plummeted in recent years, I haven't been using the site anywhere near as much.

Not surprised that this is going away though. I think I must've been expecting it for some time, since I started using Ant Movie Catalog years ago to archive my media collection.

2003 for me. Very sad news. I've been an active contributor of content for the past few years because I really appreciated being able to keep track of my collection on their site. I have to say I would typically forget to get to Amazon through their site when I purchased discs online, so I didn't do much to help in that regard. This really is a bummer.

I used DVD Aficionado a lot back when I first started collecting but stopped updating it quite a while ago. I discovered DVD Profiler shortly before they shut down which I actually preferred a lot more.

Re: Film/DVD Aficionado is shutting down 10 June 2019

I tried to list my collection at DVD/Film Aficionado some time ago, they didn't have the 2nd DVD I tried to enter into their database (History Channel's After People), didn't feel like taking the time to enter it manually (how many more of my 1200 +/- titles didn't they have in their database?), said Fuck This and never tried again. I do use them as reference from time to time though. I've had DVD Profiler since 2010, it's worked very well for me. Having said all that, it'll be a sad day when Film Aficionado goes away.

Re: Film/DVD Aficionado is shutting down 10 June 2019

Been a member since 2003, but the site never quite clicked with me. I kinda thought of it as a backup of a backup even though it's only got roughly half my collection documented (over 3000 discs). Think I may have done some contributing way back when, too. Still, something about the interface rubbed me the wrong way and I drifted away. Sad to see it go, but there are alternatives available (besides a spreadsheet).

I thought DVD Aficionado shut down several years ago. I was a new member when they made the announcement. I never went back.

I wonder if a site like this would be interested in acquiring it? It would seem like a natural fit. Just sayin'.

Could set DVDTalk up to be a more direct competitor to that other site with Blu in it's name that includes a library function for it's members.

So, can anyone recommend an iOS based app replacement?

Blu-ray.com has an app. I like that you can not only track UHDs, BDs and DVDs but also current and last gen video games.

Thanks, I have an account over there but I didn't know there was an app.

Re: Film/DVD Aficionado is shutting down 10 June 2019

All good things must end. I always liked the simple interface, even if I started coming across some unlisted Blu-rays in recent years.

That being said, I knew this would happen sooner or later. I've been keeping a separate catalog of my collection for sites shutting down. I haven't even wasted using Blu-ray.com's collection feature, because I know the developers will pull the plug as soon as the site isn't profitable anymore.

That’s my concern as well, so I’m just going to start a spreadsheet, as fancy and attractive as some of the other options might look.

There were talks from the site owner and asking other sites interested in buying or selling, including to DVDCompare, but yes, as stated above the adding of titles were backed up and took quite some time, and it's a difficult site to maintain. Same. Signature must change...

I tried the export and unfortunately the information you can export is very limited. Can’t get the titles contained within a box set - that’s the biggest pain for me.

I'm surprised they stayed up as long as they have. I could never figure out how they made money, and I guess they couldn't either. Now Film Aficionado will join DVD Spot in the sweet bye and bye.

Fantastic news! There's a lot of value in maintaining that database and DVDCompare has been a well-run site for years.

DVDSpot was the best!

I forgot all about DVD Aficionado, despite being a member since '04. Blu-ray.com and DVD Profiler just overtook it for me.
