Re: Film/DVD Aficionado is shutting down 10 June 2019
The site owners just announced on Facebook that they're moving the site to a new server and they recommend downloading a copy of your collection.
Choose My Collection in the upper left, and the bottom option is Export collection.

Done. It's woefully out of date, but even so...

I have not been able to reach the site for a couple days.
I’m still not clear if the mean to bring it back in some fashion or not.
I may try to put my exported data into a spreadsheet going forward and just keep my wishlist in Notes on my iPhone.

They've confirmed on Facebook that Aficionado is dead.
This isn't how the internet was supposed to work. It was supposed to be for the people, the communities could take care of each other. All our work over the years is gone.

Honestly I'm surprised that it lasted as long as it did. I exported my collection prior to the shut down, but really I will probably never use it and I kind of dread the thought of importing my collection into a new database.

Sad to see it's official. I spent a lot of time contributing new titles and updating existing ones, trying to do my part to keep it worthy of maintaining. There's gotta be someone out there that can appreciate what it is and has the resources and ability to bring it back.

This could be another opportunity for DVDTalk to capture the functionality of that site and integrate it here. This increasing the value of this site to more users.

What I think happened is that no one wanted to pay the server costs anymore for the site and the guy's sudden death didn't give them much time for planning another solution. The web domain is already gone and up for sale.
I agree losing the site entirely is terrible since there was so much well-catalogued media data on it.

This day and age, wouldn't cataloging be better suited to an app than a website?
Are there any apps out there that do that?

I've been using DVDProfiler from Invelos.com to catalog my movies for years. It's a one-time paid app.

The folks that have the data are looking for someone to host the data, about 170 GB.
Anybody know how much web hosting for that kind of space costs?
