A few days ago, I was at Walmart, and found GI Joe: Retaliation in the $3.74 bin. That got me in the mood to start working on the series. The past couple of days I have finished ''The MASS Device', and started on ''The Revenge Of Cobra'.

If you have a DCU subscription, you should be watching Doom Patrol. If you don’t have a DC Universe subscription, you should get one. Best new show I’ve seen in years. Titans was solid too.

Yea, DP has sorely tempted me, but I've already got four or five (Prime, Netflix, Shudder, Crunchyroll (four then)) subscriptions. I've debated paying for a month once the first season has completed, but that's a pain. I wish they'd offer it for sale by season on Amazon, etc...but I guess that would defeat the purpose (getting subscribers). It'll probably show up on dvd or blue, eventually...

With the recent passing of Burt Reynolds I thought I might like to upgrade my DVD of Smokey and the Bandit to BR so, like usual, I pulled my DVD and gave it a viewing. I still enjoy this movie and decided my DVD is "good enough." Since the sequel is on the same disc I watched it. Big Mistake. I'd forgotten how utterly horrid it is and mostly regurgitates the original movie with far fewer laughs. Oh well... at least I didn't continue with III or any of the telefilms.

Yesterday I watched an old favorite, The Black Swan (1942 - Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara) to see if *it* needed a BR upgrade. It does, but reviews of the BR aren't exactly glowing - mostly because Fox, in their infinite wisdom in the 70s, apparently threw out(!?!?!?!) the 3-strip Technicolor masters! So... still trying to decide as the DVD is quite watchable. I still love the sword fight towards the end of the film and rank it up there with the one in The Sea Hawk for excitement.

Yeah, monthly subscriptions are my plan in the future. I did that with CBS for Discovery, and will probably not renew DCU once my inaugural bonus year expires. I’ll just do it a couple few months a year to binge the original shows. If my wife would let me, I’d probably even do it with Netflix and Hulu.

While not getting in some of the numbers that other folks are, my views have been all over the place. I started out with two Hong Kong action movies. The first was Once A Thief, basically a heist film but with lots of John Woo gunplay and action. The other was the great Dragons Forever with Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao all outstanding in their roles. Then I went to The Treasure of Silver Lake a German made adventure movie set in the American West about the search for a legendary treasure which was also good. I followed that with an episode of Agatha Christie's Poirot which I enjoyed as usual. Then yesterday I watched a classic Warner Brothers prison picture, Each Dawn I Die, with James Cagney and George Raft. I liked that so much that I'm going to start with another one of those today although I haven't decided which one yet. Having a great time so far!

I've been pulled into the comforting vortex of British mystery television: Agatha Christie's Marple / Inspector Lewis / The Mrs. Bradley Mysteries. They are cozy and comfortable, the perfect thing to put on when I'm working. I wasn't really planning on watching a lot of British mysteries, but I've been reading Agatha Christie's Miss Marple books this year and decided to give the series a try. One episode was all it took!

I switched gears to Hart to Hart. I just picked up a used "Complete Series" copy from secondspin (and surprisingly at a very good price). Being a Shout! title and those seeming being bootlegged more I immediately checked it. Discs are all ~7.8-8GB so all is good. Since I had it "open" I started watching. It's still a fun little series but not quite as good as I recall it being when watching it first run. The worst part is Game of Thrones starts in a few weeks and I *need* to finish my annual rewatch before the new season starts. I'm about half-way through S5 so will easily be able to catch up - as long as I get in an episode every couple of days but I keep putting other things on, totally forgetting to watch GoT!

After I finished 'The Pyramid Of Darkness', I was ready to move on to something else. I thought, since I just finished a round of GI Joe, I'd work on Transformers Headmasters. So far, Fortress Maximus just made his first appearance, and within a couple episodes, Scorponok will make his debut.

Watched a favorite of mine last night, The Friends of Eddie Coyle from 1973. Amazing and influential bank heist movie featuring a career-best performance by Robert Mitchum. I just finished reading the novel that it's based on and wanted to watch the movie while it was fresh in my brain. It is very faithful to the source material. Such a sad, bleak film. And the Criterion Blu-Ray is the best it's ever looked.

I felt like a super hero movie tonight, so I broke out my Double Feature set of the two Ghost Rider movies, and watched the first one. I've always enjoyed the Ghost Rider comics, and enjoyed the first movie too. Peter Fonda did a great Mephistopheles. Blackheart, I'm thinking was Blackout in the comics. I am thinking that it was not well received when it came out, but I thought that it was a decent movie.

I think I remember seeing that Christopher Robbin (2018) shows up today on Netflix. Also there's a new 'toon, Costume Quest, starting on Prime, that looks promising.

Well... still no GoT... A coworker and dvdtalker ('sup lrend?!) has been attempting to get me to watch Westworld (HBO) for months. I've been able to put her off due to my general dislike of the 1973 movie. Then Amazon goes and puts the S1 BR on sale for ~$10 so I figure that's inexpensive enough to order a copy to sample and stop her griping at me. It came in yesterday so I started it last night.

So far... Meh... If I had to decide on the ~2 episodes I've seen so far I'd say "fugetaboutit!" But I have the whole season so I'll watch it all before deciding as I also have a pending copy of S2 for $15 should I like S1 "enough."

It's sloooooow. I can see things they're pushing the viewer towards liking/disliking but so for it's just not compelling. I absolutely dislike the constant music score. For crying out loud... stop the music and let people convey emotion by talking. Throwing music that's obviously attempting to manipulate emotion under the voices just feels cheap and detracts from what's being said. I also don't like the very cliche' use of reworked pop songs in the score. If the discs had a "no music" audio track option I'd select it in a heartbeat.

I started my 1st GoT re-watch in Feb. to get ready for the final season and it's been a revelation! I never read the books and only watched each season as it was released on HBO, so I "got" maybe 70% of the story. We're up to season 5 now and soooo much is clicking with me that I either missed or just didn't follow during my first (night's) watch.

Every time I rewatch the series I see/get "new" things. Part of it is simply forgetting everything that happened but often it's getting new connections I just didn't pick up on the previous times through.

This one makes the 5th time through. lrend insisted I watch the series, in spite of my saying I didn't "need" a new one at the time. I borrowed her S1 discs to make her happy and wound up watching the entire season in one day. I returned it and borrowed S2. I was slower with that one so I could savor it a bit more. This was all in November right as S3 was being released on disc. All 3 seasons went on sale after Christmas so I purchased them all, started with S1 and watched them just in time for S4 to begin. That started an annual viewing of the series paced to get finished just as the next season started.

I've never read the books but have purchased the first 3. I plan to start them this summer.

I finished Westworld S1. I didn't care for it. I feel the showrunners utilized cheats to confuse rather than present true "mystery." It was far too repetitive. Those 10 episodes could have been presented in 4 and had a much tighter and cohesive production.

Gonna wash the bad taste out with S6 of GoT.

Tonight's movie is going to be Night of the Hunter (1955). I saw it was available on Prime and it falls under Challenge criteria. I've seen trailers and the odd clip, but have otherwise never watched the movie. I aim to fix that tonight.

I finished S6 of GoT. I always forget stuff and just how good even the "lesser" seasons of that series are!

I started more Hart to Hart after GoT (want to hold off on S7 for another week or so) and then realized this morning that I have a box set each of Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto films which qualify. I'll be starting those tonight!

I'm back from my conference and back to watching Homicide

3.14 “End Game” Turns out that a Gordon Pratt lives in the apartment Howard, Felton, Bolander, and Munch were accidently visiting. Barnfarther gives them 48 hours to find the shooter before the investigation is handed over to another unit. The squad goes all out to find Pratt. I love the fact that his co-workers ratted him out because he’s a Yankees fan and you can’t be a Yankees fan living in B-More. Our racist friend Pratt is played by Steve Buscemi who just oozes on the screen. Everyone takes a crack at Pratt but it is Pembleton, who is intellectually superior, knows it, and shows it by reading Greek, that finally gets under Pratt’s skin. We even get a song and dance about how affirmative action for blacks and women keeps regular white men down. That speech was particularly laughable given the college admission scandal that just broke. Pratt is released on bail and everybody lashes out. The only thing that brings everyone together is when Pratt turns up dead.

3.15 “Law & Disorder” This is the first of the Law & Order crossovers. Logan brings John Waters to B-More for a murder charge. I wonder is he playing the same character he played in “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” The first time Waters was on, his character didn’t have a name so it’s possible. Poor Bayliss is the primary on the Pratt shooting and everyone knows a cop did it – that murder is staying in red but it is strongly implied that Munch did the deed. Pembleton and Lewis team up for a shooting in a grocery store parking lot. We get another racism rant from the victim’s friend who, without any evidence whatsoever, knows that a black kid from the projects is responsible for the shooting. Pembleton and Lewis clash on the best way to investigate the shooting though they work well enough that they manage to close an unrelated murder they didn’t know had occurred. Turns out, a little white girl from the “right” side of the tracks, was playing with daddy’s gun and is responsible for the shooting. Felton returns to light duty and because they’re short-handed, G goes out as primary. Felton is distressed at the crime scene and yells at G in the squad room and throws a can at him. PTSD may be a bitch and he’s certainly suffering from it, but G unleashes the entire can of well- deserved whoop ass on him.

3.16 “The Old and the Dead” The late Tim Russett makes an appearance as Russert’s cousin. In the cold opening she’s wearing a captain’s uniform though she doesn’t get the promotion until later in the episode. Bolander meets with the shrink to get back to active duty. Howard is back but her desk has been moved. She manages to close one of Pembleton’s cases while Bolander struggles. G uncovers corruption that leads Granger to retire. Russert is promoted to Captain ahead of G which highlights the fact that affirmative action has benefited white women more than any other demographic group.

3.17 “In Search of Crimes Past” Barnfarther is taken hostage by a woman whose father is about to be executed for a crime he may not have committed. The case is 16 years old and Bolander was the primary. Half the squad combs through the archives to find the case files. Lewis is primary on a suicide and he confesses to the cold case in his suicide note. Execution is halted and Barnfarther is free. Russert is pissed because G didn’t let SWAT go in guns blazing. If she had her way, an innocent man would have been executed and Barnfarther might be dead too. Jerry Stiller plays the new bartender Munch hired on his own and the former proposes boutique beers. He’s also one of the worst bartenders ever.

3.19 “Colors” Bayliss’ cousin kills a teenager and Pembleton is the primary. The wonderful David Morse plays the cousin who seems to have a short fuse and seems to have a problem with immigrants. Bayliss accuses G have racial animus and I kinda wished he had unleashed the can of whoop ass on Bayliss because he totally deserved it for that remark – not to mention the fact that Baylis goes on to lose his shit and break the glass in The Box. The cousin makes racist remarks and assault an officer and the teenager was going to a KISS party but ended up at the wrong address. The unfortunate irony is that if this episode aired today, there’d be no investigation at all due to stand your ground laws. The fact that after Bayliss hears his cousin spout racism he still thinks Pembleton was wrong in saying the death was racially motivated aggravates me but is so rooting in reality: even when racism is staring folks in the face, some folks refuse to see it. At least the cousin has the self-awareness to question his motivations at the end of the episode.

3.20 “The Gas Man” This is an interesting episode featuring Bruno Kirby and Richard Edson. Kirby is just released from prison and he wants revenge on Pembleton for putting him away. Edson plays the best hapless best friend. We follow these two as they stalk Pembleton and Mary and our regular characters play supporting roles. I would have been really mad if NBC had cancelled the show after this episode as they were prepared to do. We learn that Frank and Mary are trying to have a child and we know that Edson’s character loves disco music because that’s all we hear throughout the episode; it’s not my favorite genre.
