Re: The Eighth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2018

I took advantage of the Black Friday/Hulu deal and there's tons of content that I've never seen. I decided to check back in with 30 Rock. I own and have seen the first 4 seasons, so I started with the 5th season. It's been so long that I had forgotten how good this show was. The 4th episode was a "live show" - a combination of 30 Rock/SNL. It was well done.

Duck Dynasty is one of the best reality shows I’ve seen in terms of laughs. The Roberson’s get into such hilarious situations, and of course Uncle Si seems like he is just plain crazy.

I've never seen Duck Dynasty, but I used to watch 30 Rock religiously, frequently watching an episode twice, and my officemates would swap jokes afterward--maybe my last water-cooler show ever. I stopped watching at some point, but not sure when.

Favorites so far: I just started The Big Bang Theory during this calendar year. I skipped one season (don't own it), but currently going through season 7. I feel like it's maintained a high quality throughout and I really enjoy it.

If I had to pick a film, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I laughed during Why Him?

My favorite watch so far was the Christmas 2014 episode of WWE Superstars, which I watched on Hulu. I love wrestling.

Edit: Confused the thread. My favorite watch so far was Duck Dynasty, that I watched last night.

Favorite watch was the original To Be or Not to Be with Jack Benny and Carole Lombard. Honorable mention would a high school production of Neil Simon's Rumors with my youngest niece in the cast.

I walked into my wife's TV room a few years back (during S3 I think) while she was watching Duck Dynasty and asked what she was laughing at. She told me and described the show. I thought it sounded rather dumb and I had a "I'll never watch a reality show" mentality. So... one night I stumbled across it when channel hopping and finding "nothing else worth watching" so stuck around. I was surprised at how funny and entertaining it was! I also have friends like those guys (the redneck part) which just helped it along. I now own the entire series on disc.

Hmmm.... I'd have to say the 1957 Blondie TV series. It was quite fun and a lot like the movie series. Runner up would have to be the Will Rogers movies I watched - 8 of them with nary a stinker in the bunch.

The worst thing? Has to be Year One. I should have believed the reviews I read. I just didn't think something from Harold Ramis would be so bad. It's like a very bad remake of Mel Brook's History of the World: Pt.1 without the funny parts.

My favorite watch was Incredibles 2. I liked the first one, but didn't love it. So I was surprised how much I really liked the second one. Runner up was Mystery Science Theater 3000: Mac and Me. Never saw this legendarily bad movie and glad I watched it with Jonah and the bots.

While there is not much time left in the month, I discovered a show that would count. A few days ago, I bought the complete series of Batman: The Brave And The Bold, on Google Play. While looking it up on Wikipedia, I saw that one of the genres listed was Comedy-Drama.

Favorite movie...probably the best movie I saw this month was Mamma Mia. I watched with my sister and nieces because later that night, we went to a local school play of it. Was fun to compare the two (the kids weren't half bad singers!).

I haven't watched too many new films/shows this month. One of them I did see was The Man who Invented Christmas. It is about how Dickens came up with the idea of The Christmas Carol. It wasn't too bad, but I wouldn't watch it again. If you are interested, it's available on Amazon Prime.

Re: The Eighth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2018

Tried a few new shows and revisited some old favorites this month, and it was much more hit than miss. Some quick comments on individual items:

The Monk marathon with my wife was the highlight of the month. Our schedules rarely mesh, so we only made it thru 14 or so episodes, but that show will always be a favorite. My daughter was a little jealous of us having a shared viewing plan, so she started one with me for the evenings my wife worked. We watched a bunch of episodes from later seasons, including the two part finale.

The Pink Panther movie was much different than I remember. The sequels become more of that Closeau goofiness I was expecting.

The In-Laws was my favorite first time viewing, just an absolutely hilarious film. Deserves its classic status.

I’m admittedly biased for all things Shatner, but he is surprisingly good in Full Moon Fright Night horror host role from a few years ago.

Somehow never got around to watching The Burbs and Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead until this month, enjoyed both.

Embarrassing moment of the month was watching a 3D film all the way thru, wondering why the 3D was so lame, and ejecting the disc to find the regular BD.

What the heck did I just watch goes to something called The Cry of Mann on Adult Swim.

Nostalgic strings pulled with Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land and a couple Peanuts specials.

Jonah Ray has completely won me over with the new season of MST3K.

My opinion that Tom Cruise is always good in a film was reinforced with the fun Knight and Day.

Finishing up the challenge with some episodes of "What's My Line?" I wish they aired them more often on GSN. Love the really old ones; so far tonight, they had Muhammad Ali and Sir Edmund Hilary on as their mystery guest. Mel Brooks was another guest as well.

Coincidentally, my kid worked backstage at a production of Brighton Beach Memoirs so we followed it up with the movie. We also want to see Biloxi Blues, but apparently the third one, a TV movie, has never been released on DVD.

I don't have one specific favorite watch from the challenge. I did really enjoy introducing my son to some of the comedies that I've always been a fan of. Revenge of the Nerds, the Beverly Hills Cop movies, American Pie, etc. He didn't love them as much as I do, but I loved spending the time watching with him.

For Rumors it was funny seeing teens playing NY socialites in the '80s discussing Gorbachev and car cell phones but they handled it like pros. After the play they were back to being regular teenagers.

Re: The Eighth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2018

for once, my November wasn't as crazy as prior years, and I was able to get into the flow of the challenge albeit a ton of TV.

Netflix though has a ton of stand up comic specials that I was able to watch and enjoy my faves being the Sarah Silverman and Demetri Martin ones. It was great that the new season of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 debuted: "Mac and Me" was a riot.

Finally watched 'Slap Shot' with Paul Newman, wasn't that impressed.

Saw a Harold Lloyd talkie film "Movie Crazy" - that while I thought some of the humor early on was a bit hamfisted, the movie redeemed itself with two standout scenes: a ballroom dance scene that had his character wearing a magician's suit coat (hilarity ensues) and a fight scene that looked semi painful and expertly filmed.

I miss Comedy Central's "Brickleberry" and "Paradise PD" is essential the same show minus the bear ... LOL - it's graphic, lewd and all out explicit - funny as shit.

Two new Criterion bluray releases were highlights: the commentary for 'Some Like it Hot' from off the prior laserdisc was very illuminating; plus the 4K restoration looks stunning. Re-seeing David Byrne's 'True Stories' was great.

I think though the real stand out was watching John Leguizamo: Latin History for Morons on Netflix and the PBS doc on the genesis of the show.

ending the challenge with 'Noel Coward's Present Laughter' that was taped for Great Performances and starred Kevin Kline was the perfect way to end the challenge - it proved why Kevin Kline won the Tony for that performance.

Re: The Eighth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2018

I have finally run the prizes!

21 people had lists with at least one entry (and we had no blank lists!), and 10 got a second entry by mentioning their favorite watches.

Winners can go to Hamilton Books and pick around $20 worth of prizes, and PM them to me along with your US address (sorry, only US addresses are eligible). If anyone doesn't pick their prizes (OR acknowledge their winning status and tell me they plan to pick soon) by Monday, 12/17 EOD, or if they inform me they're ineligible (or choose to decline the prize), I'll go to the next person on the list. It'd be ideal if selections were comedy-related, but if there's something else that you simply must have, at least do me the favor of laughing about how inappropriate it is for a comedy prize. Ask if you have any questions I haven't covered.

And now, the winners!

Spoiler:
1. ororama
2. Cardsfan111
3. shadokitty

ororama managed to come up first despite having only one entry in the pool, and sadly one person's two entries both came up last.

Congrats to the winners, and thanks to all for participating in the challenge!
