The Eighth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2018

Rules

This Challenge overlaps with two well-established Challenges - October's Horror Challenge and the November-December Holiday Challenge. During the overlapping days, you can receive "double credit" by listing any qualifying items watched for those other two Challenges on your Comedy Challenge list.

It should be self-evident what titles qualify, but if you have questions about something you've never seen, check out its genre classification on IMDB, Allmovie, or metacritic, or ask about it in the discussion thread. Live events (stand-up acts, plays, TV show tapings, etc.) and audio performances (comedy albums, old-time radio shows) can also be listed.

Post your list in the list thread. Be as creative or as basic with your list as you want.

You may number (or not number) the items on your list any way you like. However, the preferred method is, as with the Holiday Challenge, any title watched, no matter how long or how short, counts as one list item. This should make it easier to record qualifying items on both lists if you participate in both Challenges.

Free stuff!

Once again, the great folks at Hamilton Books will be providing us with some cool prizes. Thanks, GoldenWheels!

^Good choice. That's an excellent series.

I'll do my "same ole same ole" by trying to burn through as much of the unwatched pile as possible. I just got The Beverly Hillbillies S5 and haven't yet watched my S4 set so I may use those as the anchor.

My The Goodies: The Complete BBC Collection box will have arrived by then, so I'll be dipping into it several times a week over the course of the Challenge. Otherwise, whatever piques my interest.

Watched, The Goonies tonight. I love that one! I watch it every year on Halloween and I love that it works for this challenge too.

Watching Sleepless in Seattle--this is borderline Holiday Challenge territory because of a couple key scenes.

Don't judge me for the amount of Gilmore Girls I'm going to watch this month. My girlfriend and I had an agreement that I would watch this show if she would go through Cheers. Truth be told, I am actually kind of enjoying it, though. But, I delayed it a month for horror movies. I have to get back to it.

I missed yesterday's theme, but got right back into it today, with an episode of Sex And The City, on E!

I just finished a first time viewing of 2016's Ghostbusters. It wasn't anywhere close to the train-wreck I was expecting and truly not too bad. I enjoyed all the homages to the original movie and the cameos by the original cast members. I think they did a far better job of setting up the paranormal investigators back story than the original did and that added to the story. I do enjoy the original more but this one will get additional viewings. It was a fun movie.

You’re my brother from another mother in many ways Bob, but not here. I’ll still hug you at Thanksgiving dinner though.
Finally watched this just now. Went in with an open mind, loved the original and most of my favorite comedy is from women. But this was awful, just completely unfunny from start to finish. The Akroyd cameo was the only moment that gave me pleasure. I guess the 3D wasn't horrible.

At least it was pretty much free, thanks to a Target customer service bonus, but I'm embarrassed that this will forever be my first UHD purchase.

Re: The Eighth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2018

Given the recent Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure or Bogus Journey? discussion I watched both movies this weekend and found that I was still partial to the first movie. I like that Bogus Journey tried something different but it didn't gel for me like Excellent Adventure did. It may help that the historical figures in the first movie added much whereas outside of William Sadler's inspired Death ("Best of seven?" "Damn right!" ) there was not much to Evil Bill & Ted, Station!, etc. I noticed that George Carlin was around less in the second one too.

For several years after Bogus Journey a friend of mine would say aloud "Bill & Ted III!" when previews would start before a movie -- he may finally get his wish.

Yesterday, I watched an Avengers episode, "Death at Bargain Prices', an adventure set in a department store. One of the scenes had Mrs. Peel setting up a toy display and during the scene she put up a couple of Dalek toys. Dalekmania was definitely going strong in '65.

I started watching Family Ties for this challenge a couple years ago, but stopped near the end of season five back in 2014. No idea why, guess it just forgot about it, but glad to find it on Amazon so I can pick it back up and hopefully finish.

That episode has my all-time favorite Steed line: "I asked the chief predator where to find you and he said 'Our Mrs Peel is in ladies underwear' - I rattled up the stairs three at a time."

I occasionally rewatch the Ellen episodes, but was out of the country when the final season aired and never watched it, even though I have the complete series. I should do that some day.

I watched the original To Be or Not to Be along with Mel Brooks' remake which I have seen several times including the theater. Jack Benny and Mel Brooks could have not been more different in their portrayals. I still like the Brooks remake but I really enjoyed the original. It's a shame Carole Lombard's life was cut so tragically short -- she was much loved by Hollywood and audiences alike.

"To be or not to be thaaaat..."
