Re: The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

Indy's 10th Annual Halloween/Horror Challenge
Indy's 2017 Halloween/Horror Challenge
Indy's 2016 Halloween/Horror Challenge
Indy's 2015 Halloween/Horror Challenge
Indy's 2014 Halloween/Horror Challenge
Indy's 2013 Halloween/Horror Challenge
Indy's 2012 Halloween/Horror Challenge
Indy's 2011 Halloween/Horror Challenge
Indy's 2010 Halloween/Horror Challenge
Indy's 2009 Halloween/Horror Challenge

Goal= 25
* indicates first time viewing

September 30
1. The Changeling (1980) A very atmospheric and creepy setting and mood is almost ruined by George C. Scott. Not that he's a bad actor, but c'mon man, he's the scariest thing about this movie.

October 1
2. The Amityville Horror (2005) Good luck finding couples counseling that covers spousal possession. Sure the original was pretty slow, but the remake is on steroids. So if the original is Bobby Bonds, this one must be Barry Bonds.

October 2
3. Hell Night* (1981) Your run of the mill, or giant mansion with secret passages, teens trapped in a unfunhouse. Linda Blair was enchanting, but this might have been the whitest movie ever.
4. 976-Evil* (1988) This starts off fairly interesting, but then devolves into a pretty bad special effects-palooza. But this is how we dealt with unintimidating bullies in the 80s, we made pacts with demons. #GoodOldDays

October 3
5. Child's Play (1988) The apex of killer doll movies. Shakespeare could not have made this any better. And we all owe Chucky a huge debt for killing off My Buddy.

October 4
6. American Horror Story: Hotel S5 E8: The Ten Commandments Killer*, S5 E9: She Wants Revenge*- Weirdos, freaks, and psychos check in, but they don't check out.
7. Ghost Stories* (2018) Stop the press, this was really good. Think a British Tales From the Crypt (yes, I know that the 1972 movie is literally a British Tales From the Crypt, so eat a biscuit); it's a little smarter, a little more nuanced, and not as punny.

October 5
8. Humanoids from the Deep* (1980) Take some 50's rubber suited monsters, sprinkle in some 80's nudity and gore, then add a dollop of modern evil corporate misdeeds and set to purée. Out comes Humanoids from the Deep, a movie that Brett Kavanaugh would call "inspirational".
9. What We Do in the Shadows (2014) Do you like... basghetti? I always ask that of all my prey, I just like the sound of it. This is a simple, yet brilliant movie that shows vampires are just like us, only funnier.
10. Truth or Dare* (2018) Listen, I actually enjoyed this, it was an interesting idea with a slew of uninteresting characters. And why are pretty people such douche tacos? Or did I just answer my own question.

October 6
11. Child's Play 2 (1990) This was a pretty good continuation of the series, but it misses Andy's mom, she was the heart and soul of Child's Play. And why are kids such douche tacos? Also, Kyle might be the coolest chick in the whole world, she can light my homecoming float on fire anytime.
12. Pumpkinhead (1988) Such an obvious social-political metaphor for our times by liberal Hollywood. Pumpkinhead is clearly Donald Trump, summoned by conservative evangelicals to get revenge on fancy, forward thinking, and "cool" city-folks. But hey, it had Amy Farrah Blossom Fowler.
13. Halloween (1978) A classic and one of my favorite movies of all time. Just glad they are finally making a sequel to this.
14. The Stepfather (1987) I knew John Locke as 'The Stepfather' until Lost. A nice, quiet little slasher that depends on Locke's performance and he delivers in spades (and two by fours).

October 7
15. The House on Sorority Row (1983) So this is not bad, but it's just an amalgam of what we've all seen before. I want to see a movie where the freaky, mutant child actually escapes his destiny and becomes an accountant or maybe a podiatrist. I just hate how they are all stereotyped into psycho killers.
16. Prophecy (1995) Interesting movie that is so 90's it hurts. Unfortunately it's aged as badly as Virginia Madsen. The sequel should have been all about Viggo's Lucifer, he was the best part of this flick.
17. Marrowbone* (2018) Asks the eternal question, who's crazier, the nutjob, or the person that loves the nutjob? Otherwise it was a pretty good period piece semi-spooky tale.

October 8
18. Ash vs the Evil Dead S3 E1: Family*, S3 E2: Booth Three*, S3 E3: Apparently Dead*- If you like your humor sophomoric, your characters/demons cartoony, and your blood red (or black), then this is the show for you.
19. The Shining (1980) Don't get me wrong, this is a classic and I love it. But there are some folks that are a lil too into it. It's okay to love The Shining, just don't LOVE The Shining.
20. Piranha (1978) I haven't told anyone this, but I have always rooted for the piranha in this. Poor little fishies just wanted a seat at a Cracker Barrel buffet.
21. Slaughter High (1986) You had me at Caroline Munro. I know you're not suppose to like any of these characters, but come on. They were like human gremlins (the slimy green ones, not the cute furry ones).
22. The Houses October Built 2*(2017) Part documentary about cooler haunted attractions than anything I've ever seen and part mockumentary about a realistic buncha friends who are stalked by internet trolls. This one ended better than the last, but it's the same movie all over again, laser tits or not.
23. Night of the Living Dead (1968) The 60's melodrama really works with the black and white and camera angles. I used to identify with the people trapped in the house, now I am more team zombie, at least you know exactly what you get with them.

October 9
24. Hellraiser (1987) I need to apologize right now, this is the first time I am watching this classic for the horror challenge. I honestly don't know why it took this long, please forgive me, I am merely human. That out the way, this is so freaky, and I mean that in a good way. Hellraiser looks at the Saw franchise and says, "Awww, that's cute. Now sit down and watch how it's done."

October 10
25. Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (1988) This has more of everything (except an original story), more gore, more screaming, more Pinhead backstory, more jogging through hell. It's not bad, but dear lord it's not good. And the Cenobite smackdown was kinda anticlimactic, Pinhead got jobbed.

October 11
26. House on Haunted Hill (1999) Way better in '99 than today, but still has some fun to offer. And like with Chris Kattan, you either love this remake or hate it.

October 12
27. Fright Night (1985) I love this movie like many of you love your country, in an oppressive way. Like I think there should be a law passed that makes you stand for the opening AND closing credits. This is just pure, unadulterated 80's fun. All the B actors brought their A game for this one.

October 13
28. Return of the Living Dead 2 (1998) The first Return of the Living Dead is a classic horror movie with a lot of comedy. This one tries to be a comedy with a lot of horror. So the horror part is fine, but the comedy... well, like Chris Kattan, it tries way too hard.
29. Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007) Mash up between House on Haunted Hill and a Tomb Raider movie, but somehow it works. The SFX are better than the previous movie and the (pretty) characters are more likable.
30. An American Werewolf in London (1981) I can't believe puffa jackets are back in. Anyway, this is a fine piece of werewolf cinema that's a simple story of why you should never leave the road. Why did they get off the mother scratchin' road? And why no "Werewolves of London" song, too on the nose?
31. Haunted Mansion (2003) A mixed bag, the mansion was wonderful and the sfx was pretty good for it's time. But the story was generic and the humor was off the mark. It must have taken a lot of work and skill to make Eddie Murphy that unfunny.
32. Penny Dreadful S1 E1: Night Work*, S1 E2: Séance*- So far... so great. This is a smart, modern update to some classic characters. And by modern, I mean lots of sex and gore.

October 14
33. Ash vs the Evil Dead S3 E4: Unfinished Business*, S3 E5: Baby Proof*, S3 E6: Tales from the Rift*
34. Jigsaw* (2017) Jigsaw for Attorney General... am I right troglodytes? This is an average entry to the Saw franchise, nothing very memorable or original, but not bad. It's basically an escape room run by H.H. Holmes.
35. Teeth (2007) This is a #HimToo nightmare, which does make it pretty enjoyable. Pure satire that goes after everyone equally and has the most uncomfortable gore that a sexual assaulter could imagine.
36. Final Destination (2000) I really feel sorry for pretty people in horror movies. They are nothing but targets for death, and I mean that literally in this flick.
37. Hereditary* (2018) If you want crazy done right, you call Toni Collette. If I went out with her, would definitely wear the brown pants. This is all kinds of weird, thoughtful weird, shocking weird, and confusing weird. Almost forgot, naked old people weird.

October 15
38. American Horror Story: Hotel S5 E10: She Gets Revenge*, S5 E11: Battle Royale*
39. The Burning (1981) Teenagers were so much older and less attractive in the early 80's. I am glad we have come so far meow. This is a surprisingly not bad camp slasher flick with Holly Hunter and George Costanza.
40. Ash vs the Evil Dead S3 E7: Twist and Shout*, S3 E8: Rifting Apart*, S3 E9: Judgement Day*
41. Trilogy of Terror* (1975) First two stories are weak Twilight Zone rejects, but that third one was worth the price of admission. That lil Zuni doll has got spunk and makes Chucky look like a Cabbage Patch Kid.
42. Abominable* (2006) I do not believe that douche bag Otis ever went to nursing school. This rather silly killer Squatch movie is a fun little 'where are they now' of 80's 'stars'. It's a kinda funny movie, with some not so bad suspenseful moments, that makes you ask, "why does the wrong chick always get naked?"
43. The Haunting of Hill House S1 E1: Steven Sees a Ghost*, S1 E2: Open Casket* Well raise my rent, this is some good old fashioned spooky storytelling. This pulls you in like that man dressed as a clown pulled me into his panel van with ice cream and Pokemon cards.

October 16
44. The Haunting of Hill House S1 E3: Touch*, S1 E4: The Twin Thing*

October 17
45. Penny Dreadful S1 E3: Resurrection*, Ash vs the Evil Dead S3 E10: The Mettle of Man*

October 18
46. Final Exam* (1981) I don't know what's the scariest thing about this poop bag of a movie, the acting, the script, the wardrobe, or the hair. Watching this celluloid skid mark should be considered hazing.
47. Evilspeak* (1981) Lil Clint Howard battles bullies, alopecia, and the IRS with the help of his IBM model number 5150 computer and Satan. I mean, who do you root for here? Side note, why were the nerdy underdogs in these movies so creepy and unlikable? I don't condone the onscreen bullying, but I kinda understand it.
48. Hocus Pocus (1993) What the druids refer to as a, "celebration of everything All Hollow's Eve." If you don't like this movie, I am willing to bet your fun meter only goes to 2.

October 19
49. The Haunting of Hill House S1 E5: The Bent-Neck Lady*, S1 E6: Two Storms*

October 20
50. Exorcist III (1990) It's the devil vs George C. Scott, and Scott is favored by 7. This is good, borderlining great. It's hurt by the studio's interference, forcing Blatty to change the ending and adding an exorcism by Merlin. But I swear, everytime Scott yells, my undies turn yellow.
51. Child's Play 3 (1991) It's Chucky vs the military in this 3rd chapter of the Child's Play franchise (before it goes way off the rails). It's not so bad, Andy magically ages five years after just one, but then again, voodoo possessed doll, so ya know. De Silva is the best part of this, which continues the whole female characters being the strongest, most interesting in the series.
52. The Haunting of Hill House S1 E7: Eulogy*, S1 E8: Witness Marks*
53. Casper (1995) This movie always makes me wish ghosts were real. SPOILER ALERT: They're not. But what is real is how much fun this movie is and how adorable Christina Ricci was. Other things that are real: climate change, the moon landing, and the Earth is round. Have a nice day.

Re: The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

(Only) My 2nd October Horror Movie Challenge!

I'm still somewhat new to the horror genre. I'm learning to face my fears hehe. My goal is to watch as many new movies/shows as possible!

*indicates first time viewing

October 1st

1. Hocus Pocus (1993)
I'll be honest, I didn't want this to be my first (title of my sex tape). But I really needed a kid friendly movie and I'll watch this more than once cause it's a fave, so why not?

October 2nd

2. Ghostbusters (1984)*
I'm including this movie as a first time view because I had only ever seen bits and pieces while channel surfing over the years. Listen, you smell something?? That's the smell of me watching this every October in the future.

3. Marrowbone (2017)*
This was a wonderful watch. Hulu has this listed under "Scary as Hell" and I did not get that vibe. Definitely spooky, but I never got the scared sweats. Has a nice little twist and if you possess emotions this will give you the feels. Also, loved that it took place in the 60s(?) and was filmed in Spain. Neato mosquito.

October 3rd

4. Truth or Dare (2018)*
I liked it! Reminded me of something you'd see on MTV though. Or am I only making that comparison because that Teen Wolf guy is in this?

October 4th

5. Live Event: The Haunted Old City Jail Tour in Charleston, SC
Walking through a building built in 1802 that still had the original jail doors was so cool. But I spent $30 for a guide to tell me crappy ghost stories for 30 minutes. I'd rather eat glue than do that again.

October 6th

6. Cabin Fever (2002)*
This was pretty gross but Ryder Strong got me through it.

7. Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead (2009)*
I was on a bachelorette weekend so me and 5 other girls could not stop laughing at this awful movie. Are we sure this shouldn't have been a comedy?

October 8th

8. Halloween (1978)
There is so much I love about this movie, it's always fun to watch. Gearing myself up for the direct sequel that comes out this month! Will probably shat myself if I watch it in a theatre but I think it's worth it.

9. The Shining (1980)*
I always feel so proud to say that I've been to the hotel that Stephen King used as inspiration in his novel. While the hotel in this movie isn't the actual Overlook Hotel in Colorado, the interior looks almost identical. Anyway, I liked how random and weird everything was in this movie. Oh, and I wanna pet Danny's hair. SO CUTE.

10. Castle Rock S1 E9*
This is the episode where it finally starts answering some questions you had. A lot of "a-ha!" moments but still not enough to completely figure things out.

10. Castle Rock S1 E10*
More questions answered, however a good bit was still left unknown. Overall I really enjoyed this show, but I really had to make sure I dedicated uninterrupted time with zero distractions to keep up with all of the things.

11. Casper (1995)
I grew up watching this movie over and over and over but it's been many years since I've seen it. Hit me right in the emotional gut. I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING.

12. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Watching this for a second time was needed because I swear it was so much funnier than I remembered. I wanna be the human friend of all the vampires!

October 9th

13. Coraline (2009)*
This provided an unsettling amount of a child's version of scary. Whoops, guess my son will have nightmares about a human spider made of needles, having your mouth sewn shut, and parents with buttons for eyes.

October 10th

14. The 'Burbs (1989)
I used to LOVE watching this in my younger years. I realize now that it's kind of annoying, but I just can't let this one go without having been watched this season. #sentimentalvalue

October 11th

15. Child's Play (1988)*
Yet another movie where a 6 year old boy suffers significant trauma. He will spend a lifetime in recovery and will never trust red heads again. And I'm talking about the actor, not the character he plays.

16. Piranha (1978)*
If I were a young adult in 1978 and had a sleepover with my girlfriends to watch this, would it have freaked us out? Well, you know what they say. Piranha out in the day, stay away. Piranha out at night, stay away.

October 12th

17. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
What I'm about to tell you may offend you. I was never weirdly obsessed with this movie like my peers were/are. Sure, it brings back childhood memories and it's dark and awkward and has a couple of good songs, but eh, I realized this year that I could still live my life if I never watched it again. Oh hey, is the dog's name Zero because he has zero tolerance for child abuse?

October 14th

18. Ghostbusters II (1989)*
Okay, this was funny. Just like the first one. Bill Murray may be ugly but my golly he is a talented crater-face! No judgment, I am also a victim of scarring acne that resulted in bullying.

October 15th

19. The Skeleton Key (2005)*
I really appreciate Kate Hudson branching out of her typical role. While it's slightly predictable, it still provided me with plenty of surprises and I loved it. That ending though!!!

October 18th

20. The Haunting of Hill House S1E1: Steven Sees a Ghost*
20. The Haunting of Hill House S1E2: Open Casket*
21. The Haunting of Hill House S1E3: Touch*
21. The Haunting of Hill House S1E4: The Twin Thing*
22. The Haunting of Hill House S1E5: The Bent-Neck Lady*

October 19th

22. The Haunting of Hill House S1E6: Two Storms*
23. The Haunting of Hill House S1E7: Eulogy*
23. The Haunting of Hill House S1E8: Witness Marks*

October 20th

24. The Haunting of Hill House S1E9: Screaming Meemies*
24. The Haunting of Hill House S1E10: Silence Lay Steadily*
This show was amazeballs. I couldn't stop watching it... hence my 3 day binge. The only thing that threw me off was how everyone kept talking about how scary this was. I braced myself for nonstop spooks, but this show screamed family drama waaayyyy more often than the scary screams.

25. The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)*
A True Blood homie was in this and used one of my favorite words, "shat!" Ok I get it, no one cares, actors frequently show up in more than one place. Back to the review. This didn't keep my attention very well but I'm not sure if the movie is to blame for that. Perhaps I'll try it again someday.

26. Sleepaway Camp (1983)*
Ummm should I be embarrassed to say that I LOVED this!?! I have never seen so many men in crop tops, so many WTF moments, and so much weirdness! The language was hilarious and I felt awkward or uncomfortable about 65% of the time. Most of what I saw would NEVER be allowed in a movie these days so therefore, it was perfect! Dear Santa, I want this movie for Christmas.

2017 Total: 132
2016 Total: 102
2015 Total: 83
2014 Total: 60
2013 Total: 90
2012 Total: 88
2011 Total: 105
2010 Total: 104

* = First Time Viewing
Theme Night Film
Media if not DVD

October 01
01. Curse of the Screaming Dead aka Curse of the Cannibal Confederates (1982)* (Toxie's Triple Terror #1)
Deer hunters and their girlfriends disturb a Civil War graveyard next to a ruined church and cause the corpses of tormented soldiers to rise from their graves. Surprisingly watchable. Poor acting, clunky dialog, and grease paint zombies are balanced by an attempt to make the characters interesting and very good use of sounds, especially the screaming of the undead and some really disgusting noises during the one gory gut munching scene. The exploding zombie heads are cool too. 4.5/10
02. The People Who Own the Dark (1976)*
Survivors of an atomic blast are besieged in their villa by other survivors who were outside and blinded by the explosion. Spanish production has an OK script with some improbabilities but lots of tense moments. The dubbing isn't bad in this cut US version. 6/10
03. Stragglers (2004)*
A group of people are trapped in a cabin by an unseen force and can't remember how they got there and continue losing their memories as they try to escape. Told in disjointed flashbacks, a lot of yelling dominates the first half of the film and the flashbacks are frequently interrupted by bursts of audio and visual static. It's unpleasant to watch. The story emerges very slowly and there are some unexpected revelations at the end but it's unclear whether the payoff is worth it. Most of the acting is OK but maybe not strong enough to carry the somewhat convoluted story. 3.5/10

October 02
04. Leprechaun 3 (1995)* (Leprechaun The Complete Movie Collection) Blu-Ray
The leprechaun continues to search for gold that he carelessly loses, this time in Las Vegas. Fun entry in the series which is again carried by Warwick Davis. I got a few laughs out of this although it started out kind of slow. Loved those Las Vegas street scenes. 5/10
05. Dark Water (2002)* Blu-Ray
After a recently divorced woman and her six year old daughter move into a shabby, old apartment strange things begin to happen, often related to water. Gradually paced with a nice build up of creepiness. The actresses playing both the mother and daughter do a good job and the soundtrack is very effective. 7/10
06. The Devil's Backbone (2001)* (Trilogia de Guillermo del Toro) Blu-Ray
During the Spanish Civil War a boy arrives at an orphanage and discovers it is haunted. He tries to find out who the ghost is and what it wants. More than a ghost story though, this is about human relationships, greed, and revenge. Not particularly scary for the most part but everything works together very well. 8/10
07. Vampyr (1932)*
A student of the occult finds himself in a remote village where he discovers a woman who is falling under the influence of a vampire. Full of eerie, sinister images it takes a while for the story to really start and it is told in an almost dream like way. There is one particularly effective scene in which we see a coffin's journey to the cemetery from the corpses point of view. 6/10

October 03
08. Blood Beach (1980)* Streaming YouTube
LA police and the Harbor Patrol try to solve a series of mysterious disappearances from a popular beach. Good monster movie although we get to see precious little of the beast. John Saxon adds a touch of class in a minor roll making up for some annoying characters and dumb dialog. There's a good suspenseful scene and another that is grisly and a little shocking. 6/10
09. Devil Fish (1984)* Streaming Amazon
A giant prehistoric shark with tentacles goes on a rampage off the Florida coast. Tasty bit of Italian cheese directed by Lamberto Bava. The monster looks good although the shark part doesn't move all that well. The attacks are well done and there are a couple of exciting parts near the end although the final plan to get rid of the beast seems a little lame. 6/10
10. Warlock (1989)* (Warlock Collection) Blu-Ray
A warlock is saved from execution in 1691 and is sent to the twentieth century to gather the three pats of a power and dangerous book of black magic. His would be executioner follows. The two male leads and the soundtrack are good. Everything else is OK in this OK movie. 5/10

October 04
11. The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971)* Blu-Ray
Two reporters, one retired and now blind, investigate a series of murders that follow a break-in at a genetic research institute. The two leads (James Franciscus and Karl Malden) have a good chemistry in this intriguing and occasionally bloody mystery. I didn't quite understand the motive for all this but that's a minor complaint. 6.5/10
12. Visiting Hours (1982)*
A psychotic killer targets a female broadcaster and then a nurse at the hospital where the journalist was taken after an unsuccessful attack. Very good movie full of tension filled scenes that often had me on the edge of my seat. The cast all does a good job especially Michael Ironside as the murderer. Sometimes it seems like things are just too easy for the psycho and the police force is the lamest thing this side of Imperial Storm Troopers. 7/10
13. Hostel Part II (2007)* Blu-Ray
Three teenage girls on a road trip in Europe fall into the clutches of the human torture organization. More plot and less torture (I think) than the first one but I just don't care for this kind of movie. 4/10

October 05
14. Kwaidan (1964)* Blu-Ray
Four Japanese horror tales all set in 1900 or earlier. Deliberately paced, visually spectacular, quite long but engrossing for the most part. No huge scares but some real creepiness at times. I thought the longest story went on a bit too long. 7/10
15. Vengeance of the Zombies (1995) (The Paul Naschy Collection) Blu-Ray
A mysterious masked figure kills women and then uses voodoo to raise them as his slaves. Could it be the Indian mystic? Entertaining but a bit of a mess plot wise with revelations coming out of left field fast and furious as the end draws near. Some of the killings are bloody and some are kind of odd (death by soft drink can?). Soundtrack is a mix of pop and jazz that doesn't quite fit the film. 5/10
16. Night of the Scarecrow (1995) Blu-Ray
An evil spirit inhabits a scarecrow and begins killing members of the most prominent family in a farming town. Solid action horror movie has unusual kills some of which are kind of gross and most of which are bloody. Fast paced movie. I didn't realize I'd seen this before. I did but only remembered a few things. 6/10

October 06
17. Hellbound: Book of the Dead aka Cadaver Bay (2003)* (Hostile Hauntings)
A woman commits murder to get an ancient book that supposedly can raise the dead but it doesn't seem to work. Surprisingly decent movie has a story that goes in interesting directions, some really creepy scenes, and good monster makeup. Low budget for sure but some creativity is shown. 6/10
18. Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror (1981)* Blu-Ray
A professor removes a stone seal and unleashes hordes of the living dead which then lay siege to a large villa. Pretty standard Italian zombie movie with a few little twists to add an extra dose of sleaze. One of the women is actually pretty useful at killing zombies. 5/10
19. Witchery (1988)* Blu-Ray
A witch traps a select group of people in a dilapidated hotel on a remote island in order to do something which is never revealed so a lot of horrible things happen to people for no particular reason. You'd think a movie with David Hasselhoff and Linda Blair would have something going for it. You'd be wrong. 4/10
20. Sea Beast (2008)* (Syfy Mega 6 Pack - Maneater Series)
Amphibian creatures with Predator type camouflage terrorize a coastal community. Way above average SYFY movie has good looking monsters, good action and characters if a somewhat standard plot. There is also a female teenage character who does not just cower and whimper but takes on the creatures with the best of them. 6.5/10

October 07
21. Dr. Cyclops (1940) (Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection Vol. 2)
A scientist, working secretly in the jungle, discovers how to shrink living creatures. Better than I recalled. There's a nice SF pulp feel to the whole thing and the effects hold up even today. Love the look of the technology and Albert Dekker is great as the mad scientist. 7/10
22. The Strange Case of Doctor Rx (1942)* (Universal Cult Horror Collection)
A newly wed detective tries to track down Dr. Rx, a serial killer targeting known criminals who were declared innocent by a jury. Only minor horror elements in this crime comedy. There is a lab scene and Mantan Moreland helps but Lionel Atwill is not used enough. Shemp Howard plays a bumbling police detective. OK for what it is. 5/10
23. The Invisible Man Returns (1940) (Universal Classic Monsters Complete 30-Film Collection)
A scientist uses his brother's invisibility serum to save his best friend from the gallows. Vincent Price does a fine job even though his face isn't seen most of the time. He has a great rant about the power of invisibility at one point. 6/10
24. Amityville 3-D (1983) (The Amityville Horror Trilogy) Blu-Ray
A reporter for a skeptics magazine buys the Amityville house and tragedy ensues. Entertaining but nothing special or very scary. Another movie I've seen before but this one seemed all new to me. Not very memorable I guess. 5/10

October 08
25. Sleep Tight (2011)* Streaming Amazon
A concierge in an apartment building is never happy and although he acts like a nice person he is constantly trying to make others feel the same way - especially a pretty young woman who is always upbeat. This is the creepiest thing I've seen in a while with a couple of cringeworthy scenes. It's all about violating the sanctity of the home and trust in others. 7.5/10
26. Lake Mungo (2008)*
After a teenage girl drowns while on an outing with her family strange things are seen in the family's home which lead to the unearthing of secrets kept by the girl. Told as one long documentary the feel of which is well captured. Absorbing to the end but I was left feeling a little unsatisfied. Spooky rather than outright scary. 6.5/10
27. The Unseen (1980)*
A TV reporter and her crew are forced to stay overnight at an old house owned by a quirky guy who runs a museum but something is lurking in the basement of the house. Pretty standard plot up to a point. There is a twist to the lurker but it's unclear if it's a good thing or not. No scares and almost no suspense until the end which turns out rather predictable. 5/10

October 09
28. Street Trash (1987)*
the owner of a sleazy liquor store finds some well aged hooch behind a wall that causes people to melt (or explode) when they drink it. The melting effects and the blood drenched finale still hold up. Not supposed to be taken seriously but not really funny this can be mean spirited, chaotic, or puzzling but it was mesmerizing in a jaw dropping way. 5/10
29. Night of the Demons (1988)*
On Halloween a bunch of teen stereotypes go to an abandoned funeral parlor in the middle of nowhere for a party. Demonic possession follows. Good makeup and pacing in what is basically a series of stalkings and chases. Not all of the acting is that good and it seems like there should have been more scares. 6/10
30. The Stuff (1985)* Blu-Ray
A handful of people try to stop the spread of a delicious, addictive dessert product that is sweeping the nation. Well done story has an Invaders From Mars vibe with jabs at advertising and big business. No mention of what The Stuff is, the focus is on rooting out it's origin and avoiding the authorities who have been compromised. Solid effects, good cast and fast paced. 6.5/10
31. Nightmare Weekend (1986)* Blu-Ray
A woman uses her boss's technology and computer programs to change people into homicide maniacs with really, really ugly faces. And oh yeah, there's a hand puppet that can interface with the computer. WTF? Most of the story is at the beginning and end. In between are several tastefully done softcore love making scenes - kind of like in an Emanuelle movie. Not a good movie but kind of fun. 4/10

October 10
32. The River: Legend of La Llorona (2006)* (Hostile Hauntings)
A kidnapper has a car accident, his victim escapes, and he is forced to get a room where terrifying events occur. The story has some interesting points but beyond all the ultra low budget problems the movie is poorly made. Despite having the sound cranked way up some lines were impossible to make out, some scenes were too dark, and the pacing is poor. 3/10
33. Happy Death Day (2017)* Blu-Ray
A stuck up sorority girl begins to relive her murder on her birthday and tries to change to outcome. Very fun movie with a fine looking killer, some excitement, a few chills, and good acting by all concerned. Fast paced and clever. 8/10
34. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)* (Christmas Survival Double Feature)
A child sees his parents killed by a man in a Santa Claus suit and then goes to a Catholic orphanage, out comes a deadly rampage. OK slasher movie with lots of axe work but some other methods as well. Only one or two are really memorable. The look of the slasher wasn't particularly effective. 5/10

October 11
35. Devil Dog Hound of Hell (1978)*
A puppy, half dog all demon, is taken in by a family and quickly begins to influence most of the clan. Very good TV movie so no outright blood and guts but there is a well done, growing feeling of strangeness within the family. Good cast carries this off well and there is a good deal of suspense as the story goes on. 7/10
36. Zombeavers (2014)* Streaming Amazon
Chemical waste turns beavers into zombie-like killers who terrorize six people on vacation in the woods. Not as funny as I hoped. I got a few laughs, most right at the beginning. Still, an OK action horror movie with some nudity and gore and one or two nice twists. Good zombeaver song over the closing credits. 5/10
37. Muckman (2009)*
The disgraced host of a monster hunters type TV show tries to make a comeback by sending a crew to get footage of the real Muckman. Not a top production and maybe a little stupid this is still a lot of fun. I got more laughs out of this than from many horror comedies and there is an interesting monster suit and a cool looking stop motion creature. 7/10

October 12
38. The Terror Within (1991)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Double Feature)
In the aftermath of a biochemical disaster, a hand full of humans living in an underground facility have to battle a mutated creature that has gotten into the lab. Starts out promising but ends up just OK. The acting is fine, the monster isn't anything special, there are some suspenseful stalking scenes, and the plot channels [b]Alien{/b] quite a bit. 5/10
39. Warlock The Armageddon (1993)* (Warlock Collection) Blu-Ray
The Warlock is reborn in order to gather six stones which will allow Satan to enter this world. He is opposed by two young druid warriors. I liked this better than the first one. The Warlock is harder and more sinister and the story is better. Some effects are still pretty cheesy but one at the end is particularly good. 5.5/10
40. Witchboard 2 (1993)* Blu-Ray
A young artist moves into an old apartment and discovers a ouija board in the closet which immediately begins sending her messages when she tries it. Pretty good ghost story mixed with a murder mystery. The characters are appealing for the most part and the pacing is spot on with a bit of blood thrown in for spice. 6/10

October 13
41. Sheitan (France) (2006)*
Three young toughs and one of their girlfriends accept an invitation from another girl to go to her home in the country where they find things much stranger than in the city. Intense, very creepy and disturbing. A feeling of unease begins as soon as they arrive in the country and continues to grow. The grinning face of the housekeeper Joseph will stay with me a long time. 7.5/10
42. Mark of the Devil (Germany) (1970)*
An apprentice witch hunter begins to doubt his master after the woman he loves is imprisoned for witchcraft. Good story with quite a few grim, bloody torture scenes. 5/10
43. Night of the Devils (Italy) (1972)*
A man's car breaks down deep in the woods and he takes refuge with a family that seems terrified by something in the night. Well done with a good cast. Sometimes slow moving but often atmospheric with some bloody scenes which get more frequent near the end. 6/10

October 14
44. Phantasm (1979) (Phantasm 5 Movie DVD Collection)
A man, his teenage brother, and their friend investigate mysterious happenings at a local cemetery while also trying to stay alive. Very nice buildup and then lots of creepy craziness. Good sets, especially the mausoleum, and effects. I forgot how outrageous the silver ball's first appearance is. 6.5/10
45. Suspiria (1977) Blu-Ray
A young American ballet dancer goes to a top academy in Germany and after a series of bizarre events discovers a terrible secret. Visually spectacular with a great soundtrack, sets and lighting but some of the acting is unconvincing. Several violent deaths but sometimes the blood looks like paint and ruins the effect. Atmospheric and stylish with an exciting finish. 6.5/10
46. The Shiver of the Vampires (1971)* Blu-Ray
Newlyweds go to an old castle where the wife's two cousins live but they have been turned into vampires. Great sets, with indoor spaces full of bizarre artifacts and the outdoor scenes quite spooky at times. The vampires look like English mods of the time and the soundtrack could have come out of Haight-Ashbury. Lots of random acts of nudity too. 7/10

October 15
47. Boogeyman 3 (2008)*
A college student begins to see a horrible figure and terrible events after witnessing the death of her best friend. Strong supernatural killer story has an interesting take on the Boogeyman. Several small jumps, suspenseful moments, and creepy kills. 6/10
48. Peeping Tom (1960)*
A study of a killer who is obsessed with cameras and films his victims as they die trying to instill the maximum amount of fear that he possibly can. Carl Boehm is excellent as the creepy killer and also does a good job in the man's more human moments which results in some feelings of sympathy for the murderer. Almost no blood but the killings are intense. 7.5/10
49. Grave Robbers (1989)* (BCI Crypt of Terror: Horror from South of the Border Vol. 1)
A Satan worshipper who was killed hundreds of years ago is accidentally revived by some tomb robbers and goes on a bloody rampage looking for a virgin who can bear the son of Satan. OK but nothing special. Lots of killing and blood and screaming, oh lots and lots of screaming. The monster and special effects are both pretty good. 5/10
50. Dead Space (1991)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Double Feature)
In a research lab on another planet a virus starts to grow and mutate and turns into an big ol' monster. After a pointless space battle this seemed like it might be OK but quickly turned stupid, stupid, stupid. Creature was kind of interesting but poorly done. Moderately entertaining. 4.5/10

October 16
51. The Dorm That Dripped Blood aka Death Dorm (1971)* Blu-Ray
A group of students cleaning out a dorm scheduled for demolition are spooked by a creepy guy who keeps appearing as some of the students start disappearing. A mixed bag. Some good stalking scenes helped a lot by effective bgm and cinematography but there are some improbabilities (even for a slasher flick) that ruin the moment. The finish is too drawn out for my taste. 5/10
52. The Case of the Bloody Iris (1972)* (Anchor Bay The Giallo Collection)
A series of bloody murders take place in and around a particular apartment complex committed by a masked figure wearing yellow rubber gloves. Good giallo with a fair mystery and starring Edwige Fenech. Need I say more? 6/10
53. Damien: Omen II (1978)* (The Omen Collection) Blu-Ray
Damien grows older but is still a little devil. Good cast but simple plot. Someone suspects the truth or may interfere and they die a horrible death. Repeat. Some elaborate killings. 5/10

October 17
54. Horror House on Highway 5 (1985)* Blu-Ray
Students are assigned a project about a Nazi scientist who helped develop the V2 and who fled to America after the war. They run into a killer wearing a Nixon mask and then things start to get strange. Weird movie, very low budget that doesn't always make sense but I liked it. I got several laughs out of it and in general thought the insanity was a lot of fun. 5.5/10
55. Who Can Kill a Child? (1976)*
A couple go to an isolated island for a quiet vacation but when they get there they find the village almost deserted with only children around. Good movie with a slow build up which kept me interested as the suspense grew. I found the main characters slightly annoying at times. Once things were clearer there was some action and the end made the movie for me. 7/10
56. Sleep Disorder (2005)* (Hostile Hauntings)
A cameraman intentionally kicks some flowers on a grave and begins having nightmares and visions of a lady in black. Just awful. The descent into madness story was beyond both the script and the lead actor. Full of cruddy camera tricks that added nothing. Seemed to go on forever. 2/10

October 18
57. Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) Blu-Ray
A doctor who repossesses organs for a medical company is also a loving but over protective father to his daughter. Sets, songs, story, and acting all score high for me. Anthony Stewart Head is great as the doctor but all the acting and singing is very well done. 9/10
58. Kill List (2011)*
Two ex-soldier hitmen take a job for three killings that quickly turns more dangerous and stranger than they could have imagined. Intense, often violent, full of twists and turns, starts out by showing us the domestic lives of the protagonists but then gets much darker. Not really a fun film but very well done. 8/10
59. The Power (1984)* Blu-Ray
An Aztec idol seduces people with power and then destroys them causing problems for a reporter and three high school students. Nicely done with not a lot of gore but enough suspense to keep my interest and some good monster makeup. Low budget but the acting is fine as is the script. Something a little different. 6.5/10

October 19
60. The Toxic Avenger (1984)* Streaming Amazon
A pathetic and dim witted wimp is turned into a strong and heroic monster by toxic waste. OK. I got a few laughs out of this and there was some well done gore but I found myself losing interest towards the end. Much of it was too dumb in the wrong way for me. 5/10
61. Raiders of the Living Dead (1986)*
A reporter, working on an unspecified story, battles zombies with the help of two kids with laser guns and an old guy with a bow and arrow. No, really. This is more like my cup of schlock. A Sam Sherman fix up of a Brett Piper film so a little disjointed but there are some great locations used and the acting is adequate. The story is a bit bizarre and there are some nice spooky scenes. Nifty song under the credits. 6/10
62. Jaws 2 (1978)* Streaming Amazon
Four years later Amity has more shark problems. Chief Brody is on the job but typically no one believes him. Moves too leisurely at times but there is some nice ocean photography both above and below. Shark attacks aren't that scary. The end is exciting if sometimes improbable. 5.5/10

2014 = 39 movies

2016 = 35 movies
2017 = 34 movies 2017 Horror Challenge Prize Winner!!

Total Horror Movies Before This Year = 473

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Lights out. And now the movies, folks . . ."

September 30, 2018 . . . after sunset

1. Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959) - Unsavory secondary characters serve as creature fodder for this low budget American International Pictures romp.

October 1, 2018

2. The Bat (1959) - I wasn't keen on the opening credits theme tune, but it's hard to fault a movie that pairs Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead.

October 2, 2018

3. Ghosts on the Loose (1943) - The second of two teamings of the East Side Kids with Bela Lugosi, which sees the latter as a Nazi in a supposed haunted house.

October 3, 2018

4. Fog Island (1945) - Revenge thriller with George Zucco and Lionel Atwill. Too bad the prints circulating on YouTube aren't in great shape.

October 4, 2018

5. Killers From Space (1954) - This movie could have been half its length and still gotten its story line across.

October 5, 2018

6. The Brute Man (1946) - Rondo Hatton is front and center in this flick, apparently a Universal production which was sold to PRC for distribution.

October 6, 2018

7. The Screaming Skull (1958) - The best part of this silly low-budget flick is the producer's offer at the start to pay burial expenses for anyone who dies of fright while watching it.
8. Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Screaming Skull (1998/1958) - Even Mike and the bots have a hard time breathing life into this mess, though this episode has an entertaining Gumby short preceding the film itself.

October 7, 2018

9. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Parts: The Clonus Horror (1997/1979) - Peter Graves shows up in this film - "Biography" jokes abound.
10. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Riding with Death (1997/1976) - Ben Murphy . . . at his Ben Murphy-est.

October 8, 2018

11. Strangler of the Swamp (1946) - This might be the very definition of "faint praise," but technically Strangler of the Swamp may be the best horror film PRC distributed. A surprisingly atmospheric yarn.

October 9, 2018

12. The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962) - One of the most lurid horror films I've seen from this era.

October 10, 2018

13. Ready Player One (2018) - Yes, it's a sci-fi spectacle from Steven Spielberg, but the frequent references to horror films, especially The Shining sequence, makes this one count.

October 11, 2018

14. Hereditary (2018) - Chilling and memorable horror drama with a great performance by lead Toni Collette.

October 12, 2018

15. A Quiet Place (2018) - An interesting little experiment with a postapocalyptic, largely dialogue-less horror story.

October 13, 2018

16. Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Giant Spider Invasion (1997/1975) - Mike and the Bots riff this infamous feature sporting a VW dressed up as a giant spider.
17. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Space Mutiny (1997/1988) - Arguably one of the all-time best episodes of the series!

October 14, 2018

18. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Hobgoblins (1998/1988) - Pearl promises to give Mike and the Bots "such a movie" - and she delivers!
19. Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Touch of Satan (1998/1971) - "This is where the fish live." Mike and the bots do a good job lampooning this rural witchcraft flick.

October 15, 2018

20. A Bucket of Blood (1959) - One of Roger Corman's black and white horror comedies. I liked it - but enjoyed Little Shop of Horrors more.

October 16, 2018

21. Phantom of the Opera (2004) - Great cast - I liked this film version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical more than I anticipated.

October 17, 2018

22. {a} Black Christmas Legacy (2015)
{b} On Screen! "Black Christmas" (2005) - I've seen Black Christmas several times over the years, but I thought I'd take the opportunity of this challenge to watch some of the substantial documentaries on Scream Factory's special edition of it.

October 18, 2018

23. The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) - Decent Peter Cushing Frankenstein sequel sees the mad doctor escape the guillotine and rebrand himself Dr. Stein in another country.

October 19, 2018

Re: The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

Pre-Challenge Warm Up
- The Nun (Theater) 3/5
- The Predator (Theater) 3/5
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) (Theater - Midnight Showing, 4k Scan version) 5/5

October 1
1) Night of the Living Dead (1968) (Bluray) (31 Films Subset) - Starting the month out right with a 50th anniversary showing of this iconic film. The criterion bluray transfer is amazing. Movie: 5/5 Disc: 5/5
2) The City of the Dead (Bluray) - Christopher Lee in a horror movie, count me in.....Creepy and atmospheric. Very "Hammer-Like" quality. Movie: 4/5 Disc: 4/5

October 2
3) Leatherface (Bluray) - Not nearly as bad as I had read. Not great either, but certainly watchable and way better than the last sequel (which I know isn't saying much). Movie 2.5/5 Disc 3.5/5

October 3
4) Ghost House (DVD) - A cross between Drag Me To Hell and The Grudge starring Scout-Taylor Compton of Halloween fame. Movie 3/5 Disc 3/5
5) Thirteen Ghosts (DVD) - A pretty fun remake of the William Castle schlock-fest. Movie 3.5/5 Disc 3/5

October 4
6) Silent Hill (Bluray) (31 Films Subset) - An entertaining adaptation of one of my all time favorite horror video games. Features a scene with an elevator ride from (to?) hell. Movie 3/5, Disc 2.5/5
7) Silent Hill Revelation (Bluray) - In some ways I like this better than the first movie. Certainly more creatures and a fair share of creepy scenes. The nurse scene is worth the price of admission. Movie 3.5/5, Disc 3/5

October 5
8) The Black Room (1935) (DVD)
9) The House That Dripped Blood (Bluray) (31 Films Subset)
10) From Beyond The Grave (DVD) (31 Films Subset)
11) The Frozen Ghost (MeTV, Svengoolie) (DVR)

October 7
12) The Mummy (1959) (DVD) - Hammer classic Movie 4.5/5 Disc 2.5/5
13) The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (Bluray) - A very good entry in the Hammer Mummy series. The Mill Creak disc contains this and Revenge of Frankenstein. PQ is probably DVD quality, but I picked up the disc for sub $4. Movie 3.5/5 Disc 2/5
14) The Strangers: Prey at Night (Bluray)

October 8
15) Crimson Peak (Bluray) (31 Films Subset)

October 9
16) Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (Bluray) (31 Films Subset) - OK, technically this movie was released in 1993, but it's as 80's cheese as you can get. Movie 3/5, Disc 3.5/5
17) Mortuary (Bluray) (31 Films Subset)

October 10
18) Christine (4k Ultra HD)- 4K picture looks great on this classic movie. Movie 5/5 Disc 5/5

October 11
19) Island of Terror (Bluray) - Descent movie that feels like a good episode of Doctor Who. Movie 3/5, Disc 3.5/5
20) Abominable (Bluray) - Rear Window meets Bogey Creek. Very cool, fun bigfoot movie. Several 80's horror movie stars. Nice disc from MVD Rewind. Movie 4/5, Disc 4/5

October 15
22) The Fog (Bluray) - Original John Carpenter classic! Movie 4.5/5, Disc 4.5/5

October 1st
1. Document of the Dead (1985)
Watched the newly updated version which goes beyond Dawn and Day. It's always great to Romero, Savini and their talented group on location and attempting those practical effects. This doc made an impression on me when I was in film school because of its reflections on the editing skills of Romero. Ironically, editing is one the doc's biggest flaws, especially when we move past George's prime and into the muddled digital age. Romero isn't unkind when he's asked about the newest generation of filmmakers who are shamelessly bringing back the dead in film after film. Nevertheless, he does express mild dissatisfaction at Hollywood's ruthless exploitation of the genre that he fathered at a time when independents were thriving. The producers of The Walking Dead should be thanking Romero every single chance they get. 7.6/10

2. The Walking Dead (2013) Season 3 - Episode 14: "Prey" 5.2/10 ☼

2. The Walking Dead (2013) Season 3 - Episode 15: "This Sorrowful Life" 4.6/10 ☼

3. The Walking Dead (2013) Season 3 - Episode 16: "Welcome to the Tombs" 5.4/10 ☼

3. Primal Screen (2017)
Too short on the subject. Was kind of hoping this was the pilot for a series about movie trailers that gave kids traumatic nightmares. It definitely made me recall that TV spot for Magic, but as a kid, I was more stressed by the unmasked Fembots on The Bionic Woman. 7.9/10 ☼

October 2nd
4. Mad Ron's Prevues From Hell (1987)
A kick-to-the-balls selection of exploitation trailers and TV spots comprise these Prevues from Hell. Mad Ron's collection is co-hosted by the hilariously demented dummy, Happy Goldsplatt; a less refined, grindhouse version of the Crypkeeper. Trashy good stuff from the bygone VHS era, and currently streaming hard on Netflix. 7.4/10 ☼

5. Tourist Trap (1979)
That Leatherface mask is creepy for sure. I kind of wish the tourist trap location had been exploited a bit better, or with a less bizarre method. The filmmakers can't seem to decide which horror hit of the zeitgeist they want to rip off the most; there are cues from Carrie, Halloween, Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Prefer Pino Donnagio when he's composing for DePalma, as this score is pretty underwhelming and has too much Mickey-Mousing. I also agree with Joe Bob Briggs on the distressing lack of breasts. You can't have a skinny dipping scene with these beautiful girls and not show 'em nekkid. Tanya Roberts was ready to pop out of that tube top multiple times. Full star deduction. 5/10 ☼

6. Blue Sunshine (1977)
"Let's Make America Good Again!" Like early David Cronenberg spinning a tale of a blue-pilled Los Angeles going totally "loco." Not quite as much fun as that sounds, but I dug the concept and its unexpected relevancy. And yes, that quote above was used by a fictional political candidate during a congressional rally. Pretty close to Reagan's initial slogan, but I think it also predates it. 5.8/10 ☼

7. Magic (1978)
Bested by its much creepier TV spot, which was the focus of Shudder's documentary short subject, Primal Screen. Richard Attenborough and William Goldman decide to focus too much on the psychological thriller aspects, therefore missing the opportunities to make this a scary and fun horror flick. Hopkins is definitely getting warmed up for that moment when he'll become a household name. 5.2/10 ☼

October 3rd
8. American Psycho 2: All American Girl (2002)
Mila Kunis is the Mary Sue of serial killers. She's an All American girl, for sure. I had seen this years ago on cable and didn't realize it was her. Baby fat Mila looks good with her puffier cheeks and firmer breasts, but it's the Shatner that I can't turn off. Checklist for the Shat! 5.6/10

9. Wild Beasts (1984)
Noah's Ark has cracked. Literally. This bit of Mondo Macabre is like an antidote for the CG friendly animals that Hollywood wants us to believe in with movies like Life of Pi and The Jungle Book. The real wild kingdom ain't so friendly. These animals are raw and predatory, and they will fuck you up. An absurdly apocalyptic animal attack flick that will help keep me pet-free forever. Savagely cool. 8.7/10 ☼

Re: The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

THE LIST OF THE LONG SHADOWS

Title in BLACK
= DVD / Blu Ray from my personal collection.
Title in RED = Online streaming (Youtube or Netflix)
Title in PURPLE = Seen in movie theater
* = First-time viewing
Title in GREEN = Seen on TV during regular programming

September 30 (from dusk onward)
1. Theme Night: Criterion - King Kong
(1933) Seen with commentary by Ray Harryhausen.
2. Dracula (1931) Seen with commentary by film historian David J. Skal.

October 1
3. Theme Night: Night of the Living Dead anniversary - Messiah of Evil
* (1973)
4. 31 Film Subset: Lifeforce (1985)
5. Psi Factor, S3* (1998) Episodes: Absolution / Harlequin

October 2
6. Theme Night: Studies in Terror - I Tre Volti Della Paura AKA Black Sabbath
Seen with commentary by Mario Bava biographer Tim Lucas. The version on my own DVD is the original Italian version of this classic anthology film with the opening segment being The Telephone, followed by The Wurdulak and closing with The Drop of Water.
7. Open Graves* (2009) Saw this because Eliza Dushku is in it I admit. A group of vacationers in Spain come across an ancient board game that when played causes the demise of its players. Pretty generic but the film benefits from location shooting in Spain and some decent effects.
8. Psi Factor, S3* (1998) Episodes: Y2K / The Kiss
9. Psi Factor, S3* (1998) Episodes: All Hallow's Eve / The Little People
10. Dracula (1931) Spanish language version filmed concurrently by Universal with the Bela Lugosi version.
11. Dracula's Daughter (1936) Direct sequel to Dracula, though Lugosi does not appear. This time Dracula's Daughter arrives in London seeking to rid herself of her vampiric curse.

October 3
12. 31 Film Subset: Blood Beach*
(1980) Pretty standard movie that predates Tremors for using the underground killer motif.
13. Don't Go to Sleep* (1982) Way above average made for TV movie about a young girl that may or may not be possessed by her dead sister. Pretty decent acting by Dennis Weaver and Valerie Harper as well as the child actors raises the quality of the movie. Recommended.
14. Halloween III (1982)
15. Theme Night: Jawssploitation Dark Tide (2012) WILDCARD 1 See it mainly for Halle Berry in a bikini top and some cool real shark footage. I'm using my first WILDCARD here because the movie is more of an adventure movie than a horror flick.
15.5. The Veil* (1958) Episodes: Visions of Crime / Genesis Boris Karloff hosts and stars in this short-lived anthology series of supernaturally-tinged crime stories.
16. The Frankenstein Chronicles*, S2 (2017) Episode: Prodigal Son

October 4
17. Theme Night: Elevators - P2
(2007) Pretty decent suspense-thriller about a woman (the gorgeous Rachel Nichols) trapped in a building during Christmas Eve and is terrorized by the security guard (I-don't-need-to-act-to-look-creepy Wes Bentley).

October 5
18. Theme Night: Anthologies - The House that Dripped Blood
(1971) Four spooky tales from Amicus Pictures. Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Ingrid Pitt are in it but not in the same segment.

October 6
19. Theme Night: Zombies - White Zombie*
(1932) Perhaps Lugosi's second most famous role.
20. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) Believe it or not, YES, I did see this classic in a movie theater. My local cinema chain is screening classic horror movies during October. Cool!

October 7
21. Theme Night: Universal Monsters - House of Dracula
(1945)
22. The Evil (1978) Totally cheesy but very fun.
23. Summer of Fear* (1978) Linda Blair stars in this Wes Craven directed made for TV movie. Entertaining but not much happens to make it that scary. A cousin moves in with a family and starts taking over their affections, she however, is a witch.
24. Theme Night, Part 2: Universal Monsters - The Mummy (1932)

October 8
25. Theme Night: Psychological Terror - Storm of the Century, Part 1
(1999) Dare I say it? Perhaps the best of the many Stephen King TV mini-series and definitely the best one of his original screenplays. Borrowing elements from previous novels (Needful Things) as well as foreshadowing future ones (Under the Dome) this three-part series delivers all the King-isms and tells a solid story. A mysterious man called Andre Linoge appears in an island community and commits murder, after he is apprehended he begins to exert an evil influence over the townsfolk. It can drag on a bit but the payoff is worth it. An underrated gem.
26. Storm of the Century, Part 2 (1999)
27. Storm of the Century, Part 3 (1999)

October 9
28. Theme Night: Cheesy 80s Horror - Prom Night*
(1980) Jamie Lee Curtis disco dancing! And she's pretty good too. Too bad my DVD copy has a transfer that's muddy as hell.
29. Below (2002) Underrated haunted submarine story that cranks up the tension just by being set underwater. How many WWII horror movies are there, anyway? Not many.
30. Lisa and the Devil* (1973) I originally had seen a version of this movie called House of Exorcism but I believe that version was vastly different so I'm calling this a first-time view. Telly Savalas stars as a mysterious man who gathers together a group of people in a house, among them the stunning Elke Sommer. Strange goings-on ensue. Directed by Italian master or the Macabre Mario Bava.
31. Home for the Holidays* (1972) I consider myself a Made For TV Horror connoisseur but even I had not heard of this one. Four sisters are summoned by their dying father who tells them that his new wife is poisoning him. The chills pile on as a whodunit mystery ensues. A very young Sally Field stars.

October 10
32. Theme Night: Birthdays - The Visitor*
(1979) Way pastiche of the Omen and science fiction themes makes this one highly original. A great cast headed by John Huston and Shelley Winters.
33. The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Mysteries (1977) Episodes: The Mystery of the Haunted House / The Mystery of the Witches' Hollow

October 11
34. Theme Night, Part 1: Dogs - The Lazarus Effect
(2015) Very underrated movie about the effects of being brought back from the dead. An oft-sued trope but one that is never fully explored to its deepest meanings. This movie at least tries to do so and I fear audiences never really got the true horror of this tale.
35. Theme Night, Part 2: Bogs - Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
36. Theme Night, Part 3: Logs - Cabin in the Woods (2012)

October 12
37. Theme Night: Post-Apocalyptic - Left Behind*
(2014)
38. The Frankenstein Chronicles*, S2 (2017) Episodes: Not John Marlott / Seeing the Dead
39. El Cuarto Chino* (1968)

October 13
40. Theme Night: European Horror - Tentacoli AKA Tentacles*
(1977)
41. The Frankenstein Chronicles*, S2 (2017) Episodes: Little Boy Lost / The Marriage Between Heaven and Hell

October 14
42. Theme Night: Horror Soundtracks - The Legacy
(1978)
43. 31 Film Subset: Blood on Satan's Claw* (1971)

October 15
44. Theme Night: IMDB Highest Rated Horror - Alien
(1979)
45. Goosebumps* (2015)
46. Apostle* (2018)

October 16
47. Theme Night: Slashers - From Hell
(2001)
48. Byzantium* (2012)
49. The Midnight Hour* (1985)

October 17
50. Theme Night: Beach Horror - Blood Tide
(1981)
51.5 The Frankenstein Chronicles* (2017) Episode: Bride of Frankenstein
52. The Haunting of Hill House* (2018) Episode: Steven sees a ghost

October 18
53. Theme Night: Good Modern Horror - Turistas
(2006)
54 Jekyll & Hyde (1990) The version with Michael Caine as Jekyll.

October 19
55. Halloween*
(2018) The new version, seen in the theater. Pretty damn good but I really expected the movie to delve more into the true nature of Michale besides the "He's pure Evil" line.
56. Theme Night: Up All Night - Halloween II (1981)
57. The Haunting of Hill House* (2018) Episodes: Open casket / Touch
58. Jekyll (2007) Episodes: 1 & 2

Re: The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

My Sixth Horror Challenge
*= first time watching
Counting Method: 2 hours of Television Content = 1 item

My goal is 31.

Potential List:

The Purge Season 1
Supernatural Season 14
Teen Wolf Season 2
Annabelle: Creation
Hell Fest
Halloween
Insidious: The Last Key
Poltergeist
Sinister

October 1
1. Friend Request (2016)*
Much better than I thought it would be but I had low expectations.
Body Count - 7

October 2
2. The Invitation (2015)*
This was creepy but also sad.
Body Count - 7
2.5. Supernatural 11.21 "All In The Family"

October 3
3. Supernatural 11.22 "We Happy Few"
4. Would You Rather (2012)*
Another reason to be happy I'm an only child.
Body Count - 9

October 4
5. Insidious: The Last Key (2018)*
These movies always scare me.
Body Count - 2

October 8
6. Hush (2016)*
Scary and tense. I loved Maddie. She was a great kickass character.
Body Count - 3

October 9
7. Malevolent (2018)*
Creepy, creepy, creepy.
Body Count - 5
8. Truth or Dare (2017)*
Tense and nervewracking.
Body Count - 8

October 10
9. Demonic (2015)*
Birds and babies are evil. And this was nice and twisty.
Body Count - 5

October 11
9.5. Supernatural 14.1 "Stranger in a Strange Land"*
10. Supernatural 14.1 "Stranger in a Strange Land"

October 12
11. Satanic (2016)*
Dear God, this was bad. And boring. I just wanted everyone to die sooner so it would be over. Also I have a theme of birds and people's mouths being sewn shut this year.
Body Count - 4

October 13
11.5. Supernatural 14.1 "Stranger in a Strange Land"

October 15
12. Supernatural 6.10 "Caged Heat"
13. Before I Wake (2016)*
A weird movie. It seemed confused whether it wanted to be horror or fantasy. Also we spent most of the movie thinking the little boy was calling the scary monster the Kinko Man, thus making him really not scary. Unless you're scared of copies.
Body Count - 0 (I think...this was confusing)

October 18
13.5. Supernatural 14.2 "Gods and Monsters"*
14. Supernatural 7.21 "Reading is Fundamental"
