Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Pre-Challenge 2015 / Pre-Challenge 2016 / Pre-Challenge 2017

Welcome to the OHMC14 pre-challenge thread for 2018. The sole purpose is to hopefully get the optional lists done early and without distractions. Even when the main thread goes up (usually about a month after this one) this one continues ...until we're done.

We configure them in the following order - Theme Nights ---> 31 Film Subset ---> The Checklist. It's done in that particular order due to the first two syncing up with one another, and so you can have some time to plan ahead accordingly.

That said, suggestions are always welcome, so feel free to contribute regardless of whether or not you plan on participating in the optional lists.

Also, we're gonna need the usual 31 volunteers for the subset, so feel to volunteer now minus the later suggestions. As always, I'm absolutely hellbent on getting a separate person for each day. The volunteer list can be found on post #7.

THEME NIGHTS CONSTRUCTION

Here's the new theme suggestions compiled together. We need to whittle them down to an acceptable number and decide which of the old themes make a triumphant return. Once again, there's quite a few anniversary, location-based suggestions and the inevitable leftovers this time. Don't forget the ones with fewer titles (let's say under 50) will need to be paired up with one or two other themes.

If you have any new theme suggestions let me know and I'll add them here. Include a link to go with it if you can.

Themes with multiple links are bound to have duplicate titles; omitting them is just too time-consuming. "Total titles" aren't always accurate.

Theme names are subject to change. In other words, the titles and cheesy taglines will come later for some, so please don't judge them based solely on their potentially boring titles here.

Recently deceased seems unruly with so many names and a lot of them don't seem to have big horror outputs, maybe trim it down to just watch a movie by a recently deceased contributor.
Remove 'masters of commentary,' it's too specific when most participants don't emphasize commentary tracks anyway.
Consider alternating out 'tales place on lake/water' because variety.
Be cool with multiple viewings of same movie.
The checklist feels routine and most people who watch 100 films might automatically complete it anyway, maybe alter checklist to include subtle things like grimy walls, white dresses, axe, flickering lights, or other tropes more like a scavenger hunt.
Maybe allow for multiple day themes - for example, there are tons of zombie or vampire films so maybe there could/should be multiple zombie days (or maybe an Undead week with linked themes alternating each day)
Scarecrows for a theme or checklist item (or maybe merge it with mummies, not sure if they're similar enough)
Future Theme or Checklist Ideas: Victims sleeping through chaos and/or sleep related, Mirrors, Takes Place in a Mall checklist item, Psychiatric Theme Day, Sealed Room theme day (a room or building that is sealed away is catalyst), Electronic voice phenomena and/or cameras/technology showing truth, Jocks/Bullying, Redemption/Soul Harvesting, burgomaster present, horror movie playing on television, dogs, countess bathory, apocalypse
Maybe we could extend the chronological horror theme day to include 75th anniversary as well.

Right off the bat let me offer an explanation and a suggestion...

The Return of Joe Bob Briggs / Fangoria automatically made the cut. Does this really need an explanation? Also I paired it with the mass marathon of the damned (9). There's going to be another Shudder marathon if you haven't heard, and odds are good it'll be in October. The possibility exists we could have a live theme marathon for the first time.

Returning themes suggestion - Frankenstein. The novel is celebrating its 200th anniversary.

And I'll let voting decide the fate of the R.I.P. Umberto Lenzi / Ulli Lommel since they're not exactly of the same caliber as Romero and Tobe Hooper from last year. Of course it'll be covered in the R.I.P. portion of the checklist regardless of the outcome.

I'll be a Subset Volunteer

Since it's an election year, it would be good to do a Political Theme Night. There's 3 ways it could be approached. A film that makes a political/social statement. A film that directly involves politics or has political characters. Or a film with an actor/actress that was involved in politics (either successfully or just ran in a primary).

Yeah, I think the last two times (of five) it was tacked onto Vampires, and it was decided to separate the two. Also remember that one being a very close call last year.

If we do a political theme I heartily recommend BrainDead, the 2016 TV series with Tony Shaloub Mary Elizabeth Winstead. It’s 13 episodes of near perfection.

So I never gave a date for theme voting. No set date at the moment, but expect it to happen no later than last year's 8/10 start. Possibly sooner, and I will give a heads up at least a couple days beforehand.

Also the inevitable reminder to please get in your theme suggestions, and any possible ideas for combining the themes with fewer titles before the above aforementioned date. Or if I forgot to include anyone's past suggestions.

I agree with Trevor. We should move up the time to wrap all this up at least two weeks before the start. I find the process of tracking down and preparing my watchlist to be a fire drill last couple of years. At least 20% of the titles picked i end up ordering online.

I should probably mention that the list on post 28 isn't official. Just a bad joke in response to Trevor's post (agreeing with) where I got distracted with something else before posting a followup.

If the Challenge started tomorrow and that was the theme list, I wouldn't be disappointed, I thought it was a solid lineup.

Sync Music Scores should return - if not at a theme night then as a checklist item, it might be interesting to rotate out a musical styling every year (organs, rock, 80s metal, etc).

Theme suggestion: 'no one dies' or 'no one dies on screen' (because threat of death/injury is perhaps too cheap of a 'go to' for shocks at cost of creepiness)

Thanks, I didn't think it turned out half bad considering it was a 15-minute endeavor.

Speaking of which, dogs was never added, and that brings me to Dogs / Bogs / & Logs (spin-off of 2015's "Cats / Bats / & Rats") as a possibility. That is, if you're not big on the Nepotistic Dogs Bullying Scarecrows mashup. Just throwing that out there. ;)

One of my favorites. I'll add it as both a suggestion for returning themes and a checklist entry. I'll also get the checklist suggestions up on post 9 soon, BTW.
