Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl
Alright, I put all the Criterion/comedy crossover suggestions on post 11, which was reserved for a reason I can't remember.
I'll put them up for vote sometime after the subset construction begins.
Checklist suggestions went to post 9. I still haven't carried over the suggestions from the feedback thread, but will do soon.
Got Frankenstein and Horrorspondents covered. I'll reserve the rest until voting wraps up, and to see what gets the coveted Saturday spots.
Unfortunately two conflicting theme days - International Independent Video Store Day is on 10/20, which is also Lugosi's birthday. Prism won the day because it's a Saturday; put vampires the following Sunday.
Werewolves won 10/24 due to the full moon, which is also United Nations Day usually reserved for the Euro Passport.

10/26 is National Frankenstein Friday (last Friday of October). So perhaps for the Frankenstein / Mad Doctors theme?
Also, 10/23 is TV Talk Show Host Day (Johnny Carson's b-day). Horrorspondents?
And I can't think of a theme, but 10/25 is Chucky, the Notorious Killer Doll Day!

Many thanks to people who have ensured there is a streaming source for subset picks; that is very much appreciated.

Subset Construction starts Saturday, 8/25
That gives you a day to take a breather, become familiar with the newly elected themes, and get right to giving your selections.
[B]>>> 10 more subset volunteers still needed.

The winners of the elimination round...
NEW
Modern Horror Films
Studies In Terror
Live or Die? Make Your Choice - Mind Games
Dogs / Bogs / & Logs
RETURNING
Cheesy '80s Horror
Apocalyptic Horror
I honestly didn't expect this outcome. Some very close calls.
And just for the record, Cabins / Cottages in the Woods was also in the top four. But it couldn't have worked out better since the "logs" part of DB&L is that very theme. That way we don't lose anything, and don't have to worry about coming up with more combo ideas for an under 50 titles theme. It also avoids the dreaded random.org tiebreaker.

I'm not surprised by the returning picks but I am definitely surprised by 3 of the 4 new themes picked. It's always fun to see what the majority picks.

I've been looking forward to the October challenge since February!
I was really pulling for these two to get in this year!
Cheesy '80s Horror: Stocked up on the Vinegar Syndrome over the past year. My wife still talks about how terrible Hobgoblins was.
Apocalyptic Horror: You know exactly what you're going to get here. Bruce Willis is not going to save the day.

Things are looking good. I'm flying from Canada back to China tonight, where I will be for the next 10 months. Managed to do the challenge from there last year, and it keeps my in the loop. I shall check back in a few days when I'm settled.
Right on for the return of Apocalyptic Horror! I'm teaching post-apocalypse stuff to my high school students this year, so it's timely.

There's a couple that are fairly prevalent on this year's banner that didn't make the cut, so I'm a little bummed about that. Still, I think this year's overall crop turned out really well and offer some very cool subset possibilities.

And here's the 2018 theme nights list in no particular order, that is, except for those marked otherwise. If you weren't around last year, the themes and subsets are now combined into one list, so the one with all the bells and whistles comes after subset completion. Suggestions always welcome.
Also found on post 6 with the current placements.

The Annual Building of the 31 Film Subset Starts Here!
The subset list is comprised of 33 films (one for each day of the month w/ a person assigned to each + two crossover themes decided by group vote) with their own individual discussion threads. It syncs with theme nights.
2008 LIST | 2009 LIST | HFC LIST | 2010 LIST | 2011 LIST | 2012 LIST | 2013 LIST | 2014 LIST | 2015 LIST | 2016 LIST | 2017 LIST
All the films in alphabetical order (347 and counting):
By year (All the previous Subset tables):
If you need a little inspiration, here's some films that surprisingly still haven't been used:

1. Look over the theme nights list on post #6. When making your selection it's always a good idea to have a few backup choices that sync with several themes because a) someone may have already claimed your subset suggestion and b) there's no guarantee your first suggestion will make the final cut if several others have picks with the same themes attached.
2. Before making your selection(s) avoid repeats by checking what we've used in previous years:

Make sure your picks are readily accessible by avoiding OOP and extremely hard-to-find titles. Streaming isn't mandatory, but it does help to reach a wider audience. And if you are aware of a streaming link, please provide it when posting your picks.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl
I was gonna go with something like Hereditary, but unfortunately never got around to seeing it.
Instead, for my pick, I'm going with an epic '80s classic cheesefest with a just released 4K remastered Scream Factory release...
Lifeforce (1985)
It fits with 50th Anniversary of NOTLD, Cheesy '80s Horror Flicks, Zombies, Vampires, and Joe Bob Briggs / Fangoria.
I'll give some backup picks later.

My subset pick is The Zero Boys (1986).
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092288/
It has to go in Cheesy 80's Horror Flicks, because it's the cheesiest 80's flick of all time.
