A quick moment of silence for our fallen themes that failed to make the final round...

For those that never really had a chance in hell (here's looking at you, Two-Faced Big Mouths with Dirty Dishes), to those that are returning back to the bowels of hell (Necrophilia in Horror Films).

We salute you.

I copied and pasted that from last year, but it still holds true year after year.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Just want to say thanks, Chad for organizing this! Also, can someone explain to me what volunteering for a subset actually entails? :-) Is it just picking the group film for that subset or do you also host a discussion about it? Do you need to upload the film or find an online version? I seem to recall last year that there was often a vimeo link or something. I have gotten much more into blu rays this year so I will likely be watching off my own collection.

(I think I'm nearly at 100 posts. Will my signature show up this time? If not, it should next time.)

I'm not seeing Video Nasties & Frankenstein / Mad Doctors on the returning theme list in post #6. Weren't those 2 of the original winners? Am I missing something? Are they there and my tired eyes just playing tricks on me?

In a nutshell, themes and subsets sync up. You pick a theme and give film picks (that haven't already been used) for said theme. There's usually streaming links provided, but if it's on a reputable site like Netflix, Shudder, Amazon, etc. sharing the link would be appreciated. And whatever is chosen gets its own separate subset discussion thread.

I'm functioning on very little sleep today, so here's the post from last year that explains it better than I could right now:

No, I definitely missed them, which also means we only have 6 open spots remaining.

Oh well, we'll have three spares instead of just one. And if one of the under 50 themes is chosen, we can always combine them with the runner ups if necessary.

Maybe if themes are popular enough but don’t make the cut they could be added to the this year’s checklist in some form, if not already.

Thanks, Chad. Looks very well organized as usual.

I have a question on scoring. This is my second year doing the challenge, and last year I didn't find it until Oct 22nd. This year I'd like to go for the max.

I looked at the score info from last year. It said you get awarded for things like completing the checklist, the theme nights, and 31 subset film picks. My question is on the subset/group watch films. I intend to watch them, but what if it's something you have seen recently and don't really want to watch again? I watch a lot of horror so I assume that may come up on a few titles. Would it still count if you participated in the discussion thread for that film to give your review/take on it, and replaced it with another film in the theme? Or do you need to watch all 31 subset picks on that day for it to count as "completing" the 31 subset list?

Definitely. I'd love to see The Synth of Fear in some form or fashion, because it literally missed making the final round by one measly vote. I just watched Firestarter for the first time yesterday and the Tangerine Dream score instantly reminded me of it.

No, it's always been for the subset films only, but you don't have to watch on the designated day. That's just for themes. Still, I get what you're saying and can relate. I very rarely complete them because usually 75% or so I've already caught, and I tend to stick with primarily first time views. Sounds like a suggestion to bring up for group vote in the future.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Also wanted to mention the final round of theme voting ends 8/23 11:59 PM EST. We started three days ahead of last year's schedule and we'll end it three days earlier. Not bad considering we've had a few less people in here than usual and started the thread the same day.

Subset picking will kick off almost immediately afterward, so be considering your picks, which brings me to...

13 subset volunteer spots remain unfilled.
