We can do bonus credit.

Added to the list.

This would also make a great combo theme by adding the Howie Scream to it. Couldn't find any lists for that one. Apparently it's not as popular; the "stock sound effect" Wikipedia entry mentions it, but doesn't link anywhere. Supposedly it originated on the set of The Ninth Configuration, which is also oddly included on the Letterboxd link I added to accompany this one.

Theme voting starts Tuesday night (8/7).

That's three days ahead of last year's schedule for those keeping up.

In the meantime, browse over post 5 and look over this year's offerings. Remember, there are no limits to how many you can vote for.

Now's the time to share any unshared suggestions, or previous suggestions I possibly failed to carry over.
Reminder.

15 subset volunteer spots still need filling.

All I can tell you is there's usually more activity in here by this point, but it does tend to pick up once the voting kicks off. Hopefully that's also the case this year.

I can never come up with themes that haven't all ready been done, but I'm looking forward to offering some subset suggestions.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Theme Nights Voting has begun!

  • This is for both new and returning themes.

  • If you've already voted, no problem. Just remember there's been quite a few additions added recently, so please recheck the suggestions list on post 5 periodically. Occasionally new theme suggestions are added after voting starts.

  • There's no limit to how many times you can vote, or how many themes you can vote for. The only "rule" is one vote per theme. You can do it in this thread, or if you prefer privately - PM or via email. Makes no difference to me.

  • Also, keep in mind that some themes have unfinished or better lists/links coming. One such example is the 50th Anniversary of Night of the Living Dead, which will be cleaned up with hyperlinks directing to the main thread later if chosen.

  • Certain themes will have to be combined with another theme or two if they don't provide enough titles.

  • And finally, don't hesitate to share any last-minute suggestion submissions, which brings me back to what was said earlier -- recheck the list periodically.

And if you care about anniversaries, these previously used themes are celebrating the following:

Frankenstein / Mad Doctors - The 200th anniversary of the Mary Shelley novel.

Video Nasties - The 35th anniversary. The DPP list of 'video nasties' was first made public in June 1983.

Jawsploitation - The 35th anniversary of "Jaws 3D" and the 30th anniversary of "Shark Week".

Elevator Horrors
Prison Horrors
Animated (there is a new theme suggestion of stop motion animation, I vote for a general animated category to return including stop motion)

Photographic Horror
Grief-Related Horror
Blood on the Beach
Arthouse
Animated Horror Films
Extraterristerial

These seem like mandatory items; if there is a relevant anniversary then I think those should get priority so adding my vote to these too.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Nice to see this thread up. I've been thinking a lot about the challenge. It should be a nice distraction this year. I know we talked a lot about our pets last year and how many of us had older animals. Well, I had to say goodbye to my dog just over a month ago. He was 14. This will be my first challenge without him, which seems so weird.

I need to do some thinking on the themes, but I'm always good for a subset pic.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

So, I have a question regarding the 14 or so RETURNING FAVORITES, at the bottom of Theme Night Construction link. Are these guaranteed a spot, or do these get voted on as well?

That also brings up another question. Should we continue doing a subset for all of them, which we started doing last year?
YES! It's one of my favorite subsets.

The first themes list actually did have one, but doesn't really count since it was pre-linkage.

I added this link BobO'Link compiled awhile back as a new suggestion.

EDIT: Added Wikipedia link for the post 1960 remakes.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

I am ok either way with doing three subsets for the anniversary vs day/bonus credit or not as I'll likely try to watch one title for each year anyway for fun even if can't do the specific subsets that day.

As for my theme votes...

Returning Themes
  • Frankenstein / Mad Doctor
  • Jawsploitation / Aquatic
  • Video Nasties

(^ these 3 especially since you mentioned their anniversaries)

  • Pick Your Favorite Horror Director
  • Pick Your Favorite Horror Icon
  • Home Invasion
  • Extraterrestrial
  • Babysitters / Nannies / Governesses
  • Creature Features / When Animals Attack
  • Attics + Basements
  • Teen Screams
  • Killer Robots / Evil Technology
  • Abandoned Places
  • IMDB Lowest Rated Horror
  • Travel (Vacation)

New Themes
  • They're Coming To Get You, Barbara! The 50th Anniversary Of NOTLD
  • Killer Canines
  • Live Or Die? Make Your Choice - Mind Games
  • One-Word Titles
  • The Five Colors Of Death
  • Take The Stairs! Elevator Horrors
  • Audience vs. Critic
  • Confined To One Room
  • Numbers In The Title
  • Stranded
  • Atmospheric Horror Films
  • Fire Bad!
  • Horrorspondents: You're On The Air!
  • I Spit On Your Garage

Sorry to hear about your loss, it's always tough. I lost my 12-year-old cat three years ago and it was very difficult, watching scary movies was one of the few things that made me feel better. I'm sure you gave him a happy home and life.

As for themes, here's what I'd like:

Atmospheric Horror
Horrorspondents
Studies in Terror
Bloody Birthdays
Blood on the Beach
Grief horror
Rocktober blood
Subjective camera horror
Martial arts horror

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Currently, this is what I've come up with.

New Themes:

Horror Movies in Horror Movies
IMDB Highest Rated Horror
Dogs / Bogs / & Logs (spin-off of 2015's "Cats / Bats / & Rats"):
Live or Die? Make Your Choice - Mind Games:
Atmospheric Horror Films
Take the Stairs! Elevator Horrors:
Prison Horrors:
Rocktober Blood - 100 Greatest Horror Film Soundtracks (100 horror soundtracks, ranked in order of greatness):
Comic Book / Graphic Novel / Video Game Horrors
The Screams of Wilhelm
Stranded
Blood on the Beach
Shot in Bronson Canyon
Scarecrows Killed Mrs. King
Horror Films with Fog
Audience vs. Critic: Critics Loved, Audiences Hated
No One Dies
Universal Monsters

Returning Themes:

Apocalypse
Creature Features / When Animals Attack
Killer Robots / Evil Technology
IMDB Lowest Rated Horror
Australia
Frankenstein / Mad Doctors
Video Nasties
Jawsploitation
Home Invasion
Extraterrestrial

I put Elevator Horrors in there because HamiltonBooks marked down The Lift blu to $14, and I finally ended up getting it. It really hasn't budged much in price blow $19.

That's a bummer... maybe we shouldn't use dog horror movies as a theme this year out of respect to this. My kids have a lot of pets (3 dogs), but they have yet to realize how impactful it can be when one dies so that will be dreadful - I guess it's consolation in knowing that you get a lot of fun times with the pets while they're with us. Good luck.

No, you're going to watch Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer's silent expressionist classic Vampyr and you're going to love it.
