The 9th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

The 9th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread
2018

List thread is here.

The Details

Challenge starts July 31st at 12:01 am local time.

Challenge ends September 1st at dawn.

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled Animation from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a Animation label from one of those sites. Action/Animation would be fine.

This is the challenge where any and all types of animation is welcome, computer, hand drawn, puppetry, stop motion, etc. The entire movie/show does not need to be completely animated. Something like Roger Rabbit or a Ray Harryhausen film would generally be allowed.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's animation or not, ask here.

Animation documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews that are just fluff promo pieces.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Watching the movie/show with the commentary can counted as unique items.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie/show will also count.

Lists

Since the general consensus seems to be for the easy counting method we will go with that. However, it is not required, so if you wish to count another way, feel free, as I will not be doing stats.

How to win

Names will be randomly selected from http://www.random.org/lists/ The top people, one prize per person, get something. Unfortunately, prizes can only go to people who live in the States.

Sponsors: GoldenWheels and HamiltonBooks! Thank you!

Prizes:
Prize Pack 1: Woman in the Moon BR
Old Time Radio, Vol. 7: Sci Fic CD

Prize Pack 2: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal BR
Kung Fu Hustle/The Mermaid 2 pack

Prize Pack 3: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla

Criterion Crossover: Since there are so few, I decided to post those movies that qualify for double credit for both challenges. They are: Akira, Fantastic Planet, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Watership Down, Jason And The Argonauts, King Kong, Robocop. Also, there is animation in the By Brakhage and Science is Fiction box sets.

2017's Thread

Suggestions for 2019:
Spoiler:
Brad Garrett, Don Messick for voice actors. Pixar to Studios list.

I thinking of moving the stand alone list item, Watch a Saturn Award for Best Animation Film winner, down to the 4 stand alones (watch an animated non-fiction movie, Academy Award Short film, watch something that had a tv spinoff (or vice versa) and watch an Academy Award animated film) and make all 5 of them watch 3 out of 5.

OR I could move all 5 of those to the other one of those (with watching an anime/puppet show/etc...) and just make it one big section. Thoughts?

If there are any changes you'd like to see for the checklist, please share! Also, if there is any more Criterion crossovers let me know and I'll add 'em to the list.

List thread will be going up shortly as well.

I think you can include Fiend Without a Face (1958), too.

Is there enough stop motion to be considered a full animated movie? I haven't heard of it before you mentioned it so I'll rely on those who have, thanks!

But if that's the case wouldn't Jason And The Argonauts & Robocop not qualify either?

Re: The 9th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I have to admit, other than a few scenes here and there, I have not watched Jason and the Argonauts either. Anyone else want to jump in on this? Those bits I have seen include the Harryhausen stop-motion.

As for Robocop, I know I have included it in the past, but honestly, it's not one that jumped to my mind for qualifying for CGI part of the challenge. It has some in it, but not a ton. Any opinions on this as well as Fiend Without a Face?

Considering there are so few that qualify (or almost qualify), my always lenient vote would be that any excuse to watch a Criterion film should be allowed.

Re: The 9th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I agree with Jason and the Argonauts and Robocop qualifying because there are so few and the scenes that do qualify in those movies are fairly well known. I don't object to Fiend Without a Face because I don't really remember the film very well. It didn't stick in my mind like the other 2 did.

Re: The 9th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I agree with being generous in regards to the Criterion crossovers since they are so few of them. My one thought/concern is that it leads to people taking advantage of it for the CGI check list. So many films today have a lot of CGI, but I feel like it's not in the spirit of the challenge to start accepting anything with a ton of computer animation just because it could be considered "animated."

I don't want people to go watch things that are easily covered other months (action/adventure, especially) when animated films are so diverse in content anyway and I almost feel like it might be the start of a slippery slope, saying it's OK for this instance.

Does that make sense?

But, here's the thing. I may be the host but if the majority want me to include more films on the edge, it's your challenge and I'll follow to the majority. It's a movie challenge, not life or death! It's also hard to judge on a movie I haven't watched before...

I'm thinking of making a 50/50 ruling. If half of the film is covered by CGI usage or animation of some sort, then it counts. Otherwise, save it for another challenge.

There is also a wildcard for people to use. Would upping it to 3 help?

I haven’t seen Robocop recently, but Harryhausen’s animation is the star of Jason and the Argonauts and all those movies. How often are movies referred to using the person who did the visual effects?

Could limit it to where one or more major characters or animated. Like Return of the King (Gollum), Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2 (Groot & Rocket), etc...

I'm pretty sure all the Criterion crossovers are either hand drawn animation or stop-motion animation, no cgi in any of them

That could work, though a percentage might make it simpler if it's several smaller characters that are animated.

Another possibility for the Criterion Crossover is the Showa Mothra vs Godzilla . Last year, or maybe earlier this year, Criterion released a lot of the Showa Godzilla films as Starz Exclusives. They are all available on the Starz app.

I like that idea since I was trying to figure out if Stuart Little would count for this challenge.

I've used Stuart Little for the animation challenge before. It totally counts. And why the Paddington movies count, too.

Yup! In both cases, it's easily half or more of the movie with animated elements.

Did you like the second Paddington? Only have seen the first, but it was cute.

Haven't seen Paddington 2 yet, just the trailer which looked good as well as all the glowing reviews.

Re: The 9th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I was in bed at midnight, so just started my challenge now. The first thing I watched to kick it off was episode 1 of Walking With Monsters, on Curiosity Stream. There are a lot of documentaries on Prehistoric Earth on that channel, and I know most of those types of documentaries have plenty of CGI. There are going to be a lot of different shows I watch in this Challenge.

Re: The 9th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

Tonight I'll be watching a few more episodes of Gravity Falls and then Paddington 2. All of which will crossover nicely. After that I'll continue with Gravity Falls (not too many eps to go before I hit the Weirdmageddon), and start Space Dandy, while mixing in shorts and the occasional movie. And that's only the first week or so.

For anyone with Netflix, and hasn't watched these programs I suggest The Adventures of Puss in Boots, Dragons: Riders of Berk (season 1),
Dragons: Defenders of Berk (season 2), Dragons: Race to the Edge (season 3–6), Voltron: Legendary Defender, and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia. All the ones I've mentioned are complete except for Voltron: Legendary Defender which is still ongoing. And when I say complete I mean they have an ending as opposed to just stopping.

Oh, and don't forget there are new episodes of Rocky & Bullwinkle (The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle) over on Amazon Prime.

I have been away for a few years but this challenge works out great since I'm off for the month of August on vacation and my daughter just gifted me with a Premium subscription to Crunchyroll. I'm going to be focusing on Anime for the most part.

I started off with my favourite anime tv series "Detective Conan" AKA "Case Closed". I bought the early seasons on DVD when Funimation released them and I'm catching up with the later episodes on Crunchyroll. The best of both worlds right now. It works best for this challenge.

IMHO, put on the original and don't waste your time with the update. They've essentially grafted the characters on a modern, frenetic, and rather generic cartoon series. The live action movie is better than that mess. After watching the first episode, my oldest granddaughter (a huge moose and squirrel fan) asked if we could watch the original instead. To me that speaks volumes coming from a kid who watches many of the modern animated shows this poor retread is channeling.
