Haven't posted much, but have followed along in this thread and have had an active month watching some great films.

Based on the talk here, I was motivated to get to Fences and Hacksaw Ridge. Both were excellent and well deserving of accolades.

I felt like a movie marathon today, so was browsing HBO Go to see what was on there. I found Predator. That movie has always been a favorite of mine, so started by watching that movie right now.

I went deep in my classics and watched Rebecca and The Maltese Falcon. Hopefully I will get to Ladybird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri this weekend.

I'm having an Alan Ruck / Jan de Bont double feature tonight with Twister and Speed. They're both fun movies.

Same here. Not posting much but seeing some great films: finally saw The Piano and Cold Mountain for example. And thanks to those who mentioned Fences, I had one of my more emotional viewings of the month.

Just watched Brooklyn from 2015. Let me start by saying I have a soft spot in my heart for the Irish. My wife and her family are such. But man, what a bore. Not even the story was all that great.

Thanks to Netflix, I've now seen all of this year's Documentary Shorts. They were all compelling in one way or another so I'm not sure which will win.

I was browsing the Dish Guide when I woke up this morning, and if anyone is interested, ‘Traffic Stop’ is on HBO tonight at 8:00.

Finally watched Pulp Fiction again, almost forgot how great it was. But I will say, I'd still vote for Forrest Gump over it for best picture. I am probably in the minority, but there's just something special about that movie.

I'm not a fan of Tarantino's work so for my money, Shawshank was the best film that year.

I just watched The Breadwinner and it was such a moving film. I saw Coco when it was released and loved it as well. With just those two films, it's going to be a tough category.

I’ve been wanting to watch the Lord Of The Rings trilogy this month, so am considering it this month, and possibly The Hobbit trilogy as well. Though I don’t really care as much for The Hobbit movies.

Virunga never ceases to bring a tear to my eye. I watch it every year for this Challenge, due in part to my love for gorillas.

Oh man, I sobbed when I watched it. It's a powerful documentary.

I watched Three Billboard's Outside Ebbing, Missouri yesterday and really didn't like it. It's tonally all over the place, wastes a much of characters and plot threads, and felt like a cheap facsimile of a Coen Brothers movie. Anyway, it's done and I'm really close to finishing my viewing for this ceremony. I've got Logan and the live-action shorts on the docket. Also, some friends and I are planning to rent The Square on Amazon and go see Loveless in the theater before Sunday. It's really amazing how accessible films are now. There were years in the past when I would watch the ceremony having seen only a small number of the nominees.

One nice thing about the Marvel movies that are in the Avengers mythos, is if you stay through the credits, you are rewarded with one final scene. After I finished with Virunga, I started browsing the Dish Guide, and came across Iron Man , on Epix Hits. It was only when I watched it last year, that I noticed Jeff Bridges played Obadiah Stane. I was used to him in a hero role, from his role as the prince in The Last Unicorn . However, it shows that he has such a wide range that he did such a good job as a villain.

May be a pricing error (since I've never seen them this cheap), but the "Oscar Nominated Short Films 2018: Select Animation And Live Action" is available on iTunes for $2.99!

It includes all 5 live action shorts, and 3 of the animated shorts (missing "Lou" and "Revolting Rhymes" which are available elsewhere).

It doesn't do to think too hard about any of it... continuing to use plates & cups that are people? (Are the plates even people, or just randomly enchanted...)

I think the loose logic is either that she "knew" he'd learn his lesson, and hence it wasn't so bad, or the staff should've intervened when he turned her away (or smuggled her round back to keep her out of his way) or that they vaguelly-volunteered to join the curse out of loyalty.

Maybe.

I am a fan of musicals, and I didn't really care for LLL. It wasn't bad, just wasn't very good - perhaps because of the heightened expectations I went in with, perhaps not.

Didn't much care for Moonlight, Fences or Manchester By the Sea either, though. So maybe there's something wrong with me!

I watched Icarus yesterday and man was that an interesting documentary. It starts out being about one subject and then takes a 90 degree turn and is about something else entirely. Absolutely fascinating.

Watched Gosford Park last night and it was sooooooo good. Throw the Merchant Ivory films, Downton Abbey, and Clue in a blender and out will pop this film.

I very much enjoyed Straight Outta Compton, not least because it was well acted, interesting, seemed reasonably accurate and worked well as a whole.

However... my digital copy came with six deleted scenes, so I watched them too. Two were worthwhile, each a minute or two long and added something to the film experience. The other four were utterly pointless, spent almost as long displaying the COPYRIGHT UNIVERSAL PICTURES notice as showing the scene, but the scenes themselves were... brief, often silent and completely unnecessary. Not so much 'why were they cut,' but 'whybwere they filmed'..? Oh well.

LOL, good one! I watched that last year and agree, I enjoyed it much more than I expected. Although I'm not a fan of the genre, I think I have a little more respect now that I have an idea of how it all came together.
