Whoa! Don't know how that happened there, but I'm trying desperately to hold off on viewing my One Dark Night Blu-ray until the challenge starts. We'll see.

Also Robert Hardy just died and has been added.

I was hoping to watch that for the very first time this challenge. It wasn't really easily available until recently.

It was easily one of my most anticipated releases of the year.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 13: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

I have been trying to come up with some additional theme ideas. I looked over the past ones, but it was a long list so some suggestions might have already been used.

It doesn't look like we've had a theme night for a decade earlier than the 1960s. Maybe we could use an earlier decade or maybe even a silent horror night.

We've done themes based on weapons or mode of killing before (slashers/knives, axe). I was thinking maybe a gunplay theme. I haven't tried to look it up, but I would think there would be a number of possibilities. God Told Me To immediately comes to mind. I know there are other movies featuring mass killings or killers who prefer to use guns, but I'm blanking.

We could do something with titles. I have a friend who is obsessed with watching movies with don't in the title. Other possible keywords like night, blood, day, killer, dead.

Maybe a drug horror night. It can include people who have freak outs or bad trips or movies where drugs are prominently featured, like Shrooms and Blue Sunshine.

I'll keep thinking. Maybe I can come up with a few more possibilities. Oh, I also like the animated idea.

On shorts I was unsure, usually I'm prefer to mostly watch movies but the more I thought about it the more brilliant an idea this is. There is some clever short form stuff out there, this might be a lot of fun.
If shorts alone is unpopular (?) - people were trying to figure out a way to work in Strange Things; maybe having a 'short film' and 'tv episode' day would do it (but seems like shorts itself could be better).

Has there not been a Universal Monsters theme night? Either way Universal Monsters seems near essential.

I know we've done themes based on movie titles before but my thought is that often movies with similar titles are so different and far removed from one another there's nothing cohesive for discussion/comparison. Content themes (for example, vampires) can maybe create more discussion about people's 'top 10 vampire movies' or Nosferatu vs Lost Boys - which is a cooler vampire, etc. Watching 5 movies with 'Night of' in the title has felt sporadic and arbitrary to me in the past. I think the idea is a much better checklist item, forcing people to watch at least one 'Blood' titled movie that maybe they wouldn't have before.

I really like the drug theme, +1. Unreliable narrators is one of the more interesting tropes in my opinion and there's some weird stuff out there. [Bonus points if you watch a drug movie on that drug?]

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 13: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

I just picked up Eraserhead and Valerie and her Week of Wonders to kick off the Dawn of the Challenge.

I know Universal Monster films are popular, but I've seen them all so many times, I'd much rather see a focus on Hammer Horror films, of which I've only seen a small handful.

Universal Monsters, silent films, drug trips and Hammer have, you guessed it ...already been covered. Although the first two were during the first year when there were no hyperlinks provided ('Lovecraftian' the exception.)

I can fix that right now, and minus voting or taking up any additional space. As already mentioned, I brought back Nightmares and Dreamscapes, minus the 'Hallucinations & Drug Trips' part. I'll just tack it back on. It's more fun that way anyway.

If you we do end up doing it again the list BobO'Link compiled is easily the most complete.

For the R.I.P. Fangoria/Video Watchdog potential theme...

Anyone know of a website that lists all the Fango covers? I tried reusing the old coverscans.com link from the 35th anniversary theme from 2014, but it's gone.

For Video Watchdog I used the Back Issues section from the VW website. It lists the films covered for each particular issue, or you can click each issue individually. If there's something better out there please share.

Has all the Fangoria covers. The site is a little slow but you can even search the contents of some issues.

And this link is handy if you want to see them by year.

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for.

It's been too quiet in here lately. We need more ideas flowing.

Keep those theme suggestions coming, and let me know if any were forgotten. I plan to start the voting once all those theme lists that need compiling are at least started so they'll give us an idea as to what they have to offer.

Also, we're currently 18/31 on the subset volunteering.

Was childrens horror ever used? Horror themed cartoons, or movies aimed for kids? Can maybe only g and pg rated.. ( though some pg are probably not geared for kids.)

I checked the list upthread, and I didn't see these mentioned, so I apologize if they've been done before.

We sorta did haunted houses last year, although the theme was sort of open for interpretation.

Looking at the list posted by Gobear, I'm pretty sure we've done aquatic horror, seances, African American (I think that was our urban theme), and based on true events.

I like the Mummy idea. It would be the perfect night for me to watch my Blu Ray of the Karloff, The Mummy.

Since I don't own any of the Classic Universal movies on Blu yet, I'm hoping to get my hands on some of the (Best Buy) Steelbooks of those next month.

BTW, I nominate Ethan Embry for the actor's checklist...Especially if Devil's Candy will still be streaming on Netflix in Oct.

You can add me for a subset pick

Some themes suggestions...

1. takes place in space or anywhere besides earth (mars, the moon, etc.)
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls050193364
2. female killers
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls031962008/
3. takes place on a farm
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls076573570
4. takes place in one room
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls075785141 (This list has mixed genres but if you click on horror in the refine list section, it totals out to 37 horror movies)

4. takes place in one room
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls075785141 (This list has mixed genres but if you click on horror in the refine list section, it totals out to 37 horror movies)
I can already think of some for space, like the Alien movies, and Event Horizon. And a good one for female killers is the first Friday The 13th.

The question is would the Sleepaway Camp series count as a female killer?

We haven't done mummies? Wow. There's also probably a bunch of horror tropes not yet covered.

Just added a 'mummies' and a few mentioned earlier like pregnancy horror. There's more on the way once I find good links.
