The Eighth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge
May 1-31, 2017

http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...pszltleabu.jpg

The list thread is now active.

May is just over a week and a half away, so it's time, once again, to take a look at your dusty, unopened box sets, your unwatched stacks of Blu-rays, DVDs, HD-DVDs, LDs, VHS or Beta tapes, your DVR, your Netflix queue, etc., etc., and decide what you think you should spend 31 days watching. Now's your chance to finally watch all the stuff that didn't fit, or that you just didn't get around to, during the other Challenges.

Since you choose your own Challenge theme, you make the rules.

There are however a few guidelines which everyone should follow.

Challenge Guidelines:

The Challenge runs from May 1 through May 31.

Sure, you can do your May MYOC in September if you want, but the list thread will only be stickied during May, so if you want anyone else to see what you're up to, please try to do it near those dates.

Please state your challenge theme and your challenge goal and rules (if any) at the top of your list(s) in the list thread so others can tell what you're doing.

Please don't duplicate an existing "Official" DVD Talk Challenge.

This guideline is mainly here so we don't subtract from participation in any of the other Challenges, and to encourage participants to focus on genres not already covered by a Challenge, but since everyone's "need to watch" list is different, and you're able to watch stuff that qualifies for one or more of the other Challenges during every other Challenge, you're free to narrow the focus of one of the broader "Official" Challenges.

For example; Say you only collect horror, then you could make your Challenge to watch just horror films, or just horror TV shows, or just zombie films, etc. Or if you have lots of unwatched Sci-Fi, then your MYOC could be just watch Sci-Fi movies, or watch Star Trek shows, or watch TOS, etc.

Here's Trevor's handy-dandy list of Challenges from his "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium thread:

DVDTalk Challenge Schedule

<table border="4"> <tr><td>
Month
</td><td>Month-long Challenge</td><td>
Partial Month Challenge
</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>January</td><td>TV</td><td>Holiday ends on the 1st; varying Academy Award</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>February</td><td>none</td><td>varying Academy Award</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>March</td><td>Action/Adventure/Crime</td><td>varying Academy Award</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>April</td><td>Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie</td><td>none</td></tr> <tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>May</td><td>Make-Your-Own</td><td>none</td></tr> <tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>June</td><td>Historical Appreciation</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>July</td><td>Sci-Fi/Fantasy</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>August</td><td>Animation</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>September</td><td>Criterion</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>October</td><td>Horror</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>November</td><td>Comedy</td><td>Holiday starts week of Thanksgiving</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>December</td><td>Holiday</td><td>none</td></tr></table>

Since we already have Monthly "Unwatched Media Pile" Threads, please do not use that as a theme.

During past MYOCs, people weren't happy with this being used as a theme, and I tend to agree that it is a little lazy. So how about giving a little thought to the theme and coming up with something a little more creative, please?

I'm planning on trying a 31 3D Movies in 31 Days Challenge.

I've actually already been working on my Challenge, since I'm only participating in the Drive In Challenge a little bit at a time, when I get in the mood. I'm doing Action Adventure/Documentary/Sports.

I think for this year's challenge it's gonna be 'Sports' themed

I've not given much thought to this year yet... I need to come up with something that helps me burn through as much of the unopened pile as possible.

I want to watch everything I can get my hands on of Bill Paxton's, but I'm not sure there's enough material there, so I may do a 2016 to date "in memoriam". then I could watch Bowie movies and the like as well. Just need a catchy title.

I might do musicals again since they fit into very few of the official challenges. Either that or a specific TV show.

Thanks. I know it's nothing great, but I wanted to put something there. I wanted to do something more impressive, but it's hard to find time to do something like that when I'm spending so much time watching drive-in movies. I'll have to skip a film or two next week so I can make a banner for my 3D challenge.

I was going to start by partial Buffy and complete Angel re-watch soon so I can wait until the 1st.

I'm going to do a "First Time Viewing" Challenge.

I have 4 (or is it 5?) seasons of Newhart yet to watch and I'm really wanting to just dive in. So... I'm leaning towards a "What about Bob?" challenge and watching movies & TV shows in which Bob Newhart has appeared. That would also allow a rewatching of Catch 22. :)

I'm still undecided. For a few years, I've thought about an "extras/special features" challenge--devoting my time to all those commentaries, deleted scenes, documentaries and the like which I have interest in, but typically skip as I go through my unwatched pile. I still may go that route, but may save it and go a different direction.

After thinking about it, since I did Action Adventure last year, this year, I am debating between either cartoons, which is narrowed from the animation challenge by being cel animation, or sci-fi and leaving in documentaries/sports, to include all outdoor sports.

I've decided, I'm going to do a Documentary/Sci-Fi/Sports Challenge. Trying to think of a catchy name for it.

Count me in. I'm thinking about doing a British film and TV challenge. It will be mostly TV since I have way too many seasons of mystery, sf, and comedy shows sitting around unopened than I really want to think about. Of course I reserve the right to change my mind at the last minute!

I started the year determined to whittle down the "unwatched" pile, which is what I've been doing the past 3 months (quite successfully I might add). I think I'll take a break from that and make my challenge back to back personal favorites: my all-time-absolutely-love-and-never-get-tired-of-watching films.

I'm gonna do an 80's challenge again. But this time I'm going to stay away from popular titles that are on 80's Top 100 lists. I'll focus more on "the forgotten movies" that I haven't seen in 20+ years.

I will honor my DVD prize from last year's challenge and do a swords, sandals, and swashbucklers theme.

I like that idea. I'm going to do something similar. My favorite TV series and Movies. I will call it 'My Favorite Things'.

I'm still undecided about my theme for this year since nothing sticks out to me yet as being something I feel compelled to watch a bunch of. I may do a theme of watching a particular non-Criterion label's releases to focus on that sort of thing if I can't think of a better idea. Otherwise, I may do a multi-tier challenge with a few different goals of 15 of this, 20 of that, or such.

My past challenges:

Get Your Moneys Worth Rewatch Challenge
The FIFO Challenge
31 Days Of Black Friday Challenge
The Lexx Challenge
The Mad Men & Wife's 'To Watch' Pile Challenge
The Big Lots Challenge

We'll have to check out the 'to watch' piles and see if any themes emerge....

Re: The Eighth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2017

Oh! Your Black Friday and Big Lots themes gave me an idea! HMV just went out of business here and I bought WAY more movies than I ever should have. I could do a challenge to watch those purchases. I could combine it with my Bill Paxton idea as well.
