The 11th Annual Academy Award Challenge (January 24, 2017 - February 26, 2017)

The 11th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge

Official Rules

-ANY movie that has been NOMINATED or WON an Academy Award counts

-There is NO time limit, meaning it doesn't matter how long or short the item in question is, as long as it has been nominated or won an Academy Award

-You can watch a movie once then count it again if you watch the same film with a commentary

-There WILL BE a separate thread for LISTS ONLY created shortly before the challenge begins.

-You can count the actual Academy Awards Ceremony to be televised on Sunday February 26 2017 as an entry if you'd like.

-There will be an "In Memoriam" Wild Card option. You can select up to 10 films to watch featuring a celebrity that died during 2016. But only ONE movie per celebrity. For example: You can watch "Stir Crazy" to honor Gene Wilder but you cannot watch another Gene Wilder movie that did not win or was not nominated for an Oscar unless another celebrity that died during 2016 is in it. If that makes sense... The celebrity has to have died in 2016.

-The challenge begins at dawn local time Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at and will end at 11:59pm on Sunday, February 26, 2017

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, REMEMBER TO NUMBER YOUR LISTS

re: The 11th Annual Academy Award Challenge (January 24, 2017 - February 26, 2017)

Morning everyone. Here's the discussion thread for the upcoming Oscar Challenge. There are a couple of changes this year so I thought I would get the thread going early so we can discuss them.

First, we're running full-on from the Nominations announcement (January 24) through the ceremony (February 26). That gives us more than 30 days so feel free to discuss.

The Checklist has been overhauled a bit too. The dates have been changed to conform to how the Academy lists them and the film ratings have been removed because the MPAA doesn't have anything to do with the Academy. Discuss and let me know if I screwed anything up in the initial post.

Just a note. The link to the Academy Award Database doesn't work.

Another thread note - this is the 11th Annual Challenge. The 10th was last year:

I gotta figure out what year I'm missing. Give me a few minutes to fix this.

Last year, based on the links Greg shared.

Thanks for doing this. The OP looks good. I always appreciate the links to previous discussions/lists.

Yep I lopped off last year. I updated the thread and will ask the moderators to rename this one the 11th Annual Challenge. I'm off to a great start hosting this challenge aren't I?

I wonder how many people watched the Golden Globes last night as a precursor to the Oscars. I started to watch them, but was tired and ended up falling asleep early on. One nomination I heard about that surprised me however, was Deadpool, in the Best Drama Category.

On a side note, I'm looking forward to finally seeing Cleopatra this year, as it is on Netflix now.

Re: The 11th Annual Academy Award Challenge (January 24, 2017 - February 26, 2017)

I think Deadpool was in the musical/comedy category (At least I hope it was).

I rarely watch awards shows since the winners and clips from the best and worst moments are available online the next day. Wasn't surprised that La La Land cleaned up. As I heard someone say this morning: when Hollywood makes a movie about itself, that film always wins. That's the only explanation I have with Denzel Washington losing in the Best Actor category. I'm not a fan of musicals so I have no desire to see it.

Glad that Moonlight won something because that was certainly the best film I saw last year.

Cleopatra is interesting - I watched it for this challenge two years ago I think. Settle in though: it is not a short film.

I also have some new Disney movies waiting in the wings. A couple months back, the featured titles for the Disney Movie Club, was a 2 movie set of Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory. I know Nemo is already eligible, and I expect Dory to get a nod as well.

I also said yes to this month's featured title of Pete's Dragon. I don't know if it will get a nomination, but if it does, I'll be ready. I got it because I wanted to see the movie though, not just for this Challenge.

I love the change to the 10 year periods rather than decades as this opens up that first bracket to a lot more variety than in prior challenges.

Oops, forgot to change my calendar to February when typing that day/date.

For those following along, I'll start the list thread tomorrow. The fun and excitement begins on Tuesday. Place your non-monetary bets here on what films will be nominated. I have my fingers crossed for Moonlight getting nominated for at least five awards.

Can't wait, and as an extra added bonus, I got Airport, on Blu Ray for Christmas, and have been saving it for the Challenge.

My fingers are crossed as well. I've been catching up with 2016 films, and so far Moonlight is my favorite of last years crop. I'm also hoping that Arrival gets a few nominations.

Just a question. Does the Challenge actually begin at dawn on Tuesday, or does it begin with the announcements?

Re: The 11th Annual Academy Award Challenge (January 24, 2017 - February 26, 2017)

I put dawn for the sake of consistency. Some folks might want to get a title or two in before the announcements (if they're early birds or live in a more eastern time zone). If folks want to wait until the announcement just let me know.

I'm fine with dawn. I'll be home alone on Tuesday, and also happen to live in an Eastern Time Zone, so I can get in a lot on Tuesday.

Last question from me before the fun begins bright and early tomorrow morning. Last year in the Official Challenge Compendium Thread there were general comments on how to generate more discussion in the individual challenges. Everyone pointed to the horror challenge as a shining example. As someone who is scared stiff of horror films, I have not frequented that challenge but apparently there are mini challenges and theme days which sound like fun. Would folks be interested in something like that for this challenge? Maybe have a specific category or decade on a particular day and everyone, if they are so inclined, can watch a film from that category or decade.

Just throwing it out there.

I don't know for sure whether I'd participate or not, but I might in some of them, depending on what they were, so I kind of like the idea.

Might be an idea to start of slower with theme or subset weeks, ala the comedy Challenge and others. Daily things might be overkill unless/until Challenges get to a certain participation level.

Same here. I'd be game to try to participate when I can (I have to travel a few times during the challenge-- however I'm HOPING to use that to my advantage), but I'd hate for you to do a ton of work arranging things only to have a small turnout.

If anyone is interested in watching the eligible James Bond films, and has a Roku, the free channel, Salsa Warriors, has every single James Bond movie made on there.

On a side note, I have the house to myself tomorrow, and am getting super excited to start on this Challenge as soon as dawn breaks tomorrow morning. Now I just need to decide what I want to start with.
