Still only seen the first Hobbit. Long, tedious and dull. I was hoping to get the super Sextet box at some point and watch them then, but it's far, far too expensive.

I agree with you, but I thought if I had planned to watch the Lord Of The Rings movies sometime, I had better watch The Hobbit movies first. I did finish the third one this morning, but don't quite know if I'm ready to undertake watching the LoTR trilogy so soon.

On a side note, a snowstorm is keeping me home today, so what I do decide to watch, I'll have plenty of time for.

Might have to buy Arrival when it's released. Definitely enjoyed it and it's worth re-watch once or three times.

Going to try to focus more on Oscar winners, since I've seen many of this years noms.

Where did you see that? I just looked up the 6 movie extended set on Amazon, and it was $138. I have the extended editions of the LoTR trilogy on digital, but only have the theatrical editions of The Hobbit. For $30, I'd jump at upgrading.

Snuck in the Pixar shorts between class and meetings. They never get old.

I'm debating going to see the Moana Sing-Along tomorrow. Has anyone here attended a sing-along in theaters? This could either be a lot of fun or a total disaster.

Mrs. Miniver really is an exceptional film. It's got exciting bits, sad bits, funny bits and whole lot of pure Drama. To some extent, it's "unremarkable* normal life" (as was, during wartime), which can often strike me as less-than-worthwhile, but it's so good. And sad. Part of the power of it, I suspect, is in the (perhaps heavy-handed - there's literal preaching of the message...) way it hammers home both the mundane horror of loss and the necessity of 'soldiering on' despite the sadness and destruction at home, as well as on the battlefields. Propaganda, certainly - but no less true and important for it.

*Inasmuch as wartime dramas can be said to be unremarkable

I enjoy both series, but LOTRs is a MUCH better trilogy. I think Jackson just tried to pack too much in pulling from other books and trying to fill out 3 movies with it. I never have problems watching LOTRs and I own the extended versions-they go a lot more quickly then you'd think.

I watched Fellowship Of The Ring yesterday, and part of The Two Towers , and have to say, I enjoy the extended editions much better than the theatrical versions. Snowstorm is still going on today, so should have plenty of time to watch what I want to watch. Not sure if I want to continue the LoTR trilogy or not though. I love them, but might be ready for a break.

I'm pretty certain I went to a showing of FROZEN (my only time seeing it) that was advertised as "sing-along" but, thankfully, the audience was so sparse (weekday evening after work, well into the film's run) that no one took the bait. I remember sitting there silently pleading, "Please, no one sing, please, no one sing."

Watched Gentlemen's Agreement for the first time on Netflix the other day, what a great film.

The tape was in great shape and the film was interesting. Watching Robin Williams' manic energy just reminded me of how much I miss his talent. I had very little sympathy of Jeff Bridges' character so that was a problem for me. Anti-heroes are one thing but Bridges just came across as an ass and my tolerance for assholes is really low these days.

I just finished watching The Cove which probably wasn't the best idea. I participated in a dolphin encounter a few years ago when I went on a cruise and now I feel like the scum of the earth for having done that. I need to find a happy movie to watch next.

I don't know what I'm going to watch this weekend, but I get plenty of time. The snowstorm is going to last all weekend, so nothing to do but watch movies and TV. Probably mix things up with some stuff for this Challenge, and some for the TV Challenge.

It seems like a lot of war time documentaries were nominated for Oscars, and are also on YouTube. I just finished an interesting one about Kokoda, in New Guinea, called 'Kokoda Front Line!', to start off today's Challenge viewing.

Stayed home instead of heading out for karaoke and rented Captain Fantastic (not the Elton John album, lol) from iTunes for $0.99. It was there rental of the week (if anyone else is interested). Viggo is quite good in it, and gets the film's lone nomination. The children all do a fine job as well.

Watched Moonlight for the second time and the film is just as beautiful and heartbreaking as I remember (from two months ago).

Went a completely different direction with The Towering Inferno and Earthquake the latter of which I had not seen before. I think all the disaster films from the 70s are structured the same and they're all fun in their own way. Aside from Walter Matthau's barfly, Earthquake's characters aren't as memorable.

I didn't want to go for the disaster trifecta with The Poseidon Adventure so I watched Gigi. I hadn't seen that before and I didn't do my research ahead of time because I did not know it was a musical. I don't like musicals. I'm at a loss for how this film beat out Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Defiant Ones for Best Picture. Maybe it's my anti-musical bias but Gigi was not a particularly interesting film. I must be missing something.

My 17 year old daughter is my movie watcher and wants to check off titles from her "Must See List" during this challenge. Last night we started with Ex Machina and The Untouchables. She really enjoyed De Palma's classic.

I tried to convince her to follow up with another Kevin Costner film, JFK, but she said "It's too long!" So instead, we're watching A Streetcar Named Desire. She's a sucker for a young Brando.
