Re: The 11th Annual Academy Award Challenge (January 24, 2017 - February 26, 2017)

I'm gonna be weird and start the challenge with my annual Oscar screenings on Friday night, then kick into it whole hog on Saturday. (Most challenges begin at dusk the night before, so I'm gonna go with that bit of weirdness, too.)

I'm a 30 for 30 kinda guy so I'm looking to do 30 features in 30 days, which is a challenge for me every year! Ha! But I love Oscar Season, so...

In honor of the impending noms tomorrow at 5:18AM PST, I'm about to screen Christopher Guest's "For Your Consideration".

Re: The 11th Annual Academy Award Challenge (January 24, 2017 - February 26, 2017)

I have class all day so I might get in a couple shorts later. Unfortunately, only one title in my film class will be eligible this year.

I'll see how the discussion goes and if we get a little stagnant, I'll bust out a mini challenge for our final week. It might inspire folks toward a final push to reach their individual goal.

I'll post a link to the nominees when they're available. Have fun everybody!

I kicked off my Challenge with what I think is a very powerful documentary, that I try to watch every year, Virunga. It really hits home for me, as I am a strong believer in the protection of our natural resources.

I had planned to watch Finding Dory this month, when I saw it on the list of Best Animated Feature Films. I don't know what happened though, as Finding Dory was removed from the list.

And the often triumphant Pixar who’ve won the animation category Oscar on eight previous occasions will have to sit out this year’s ceremony after the billion dollar grossing sequel Finding Dory failed to land a nomination from the Academy.

So this challenge has opened up an opportunity to do something I haven't done in a long time: I am watching a movie on VHS. I requested The Fisher King from the library and I wasn't paying attention to the format. Imagine my surprise when I get to the library and it's an actual video tape. Thankfully I'm one of the few people left who has a functional VCR. The film is quite interesting so far.

I'm still in the TV on DVD Challenge and just watched some western episodes on VHS today.

I think I accidentally got in a double credit item tonight. Sort of a fudge perhaps, but I'm counting it in both Challenges. It's the TV teleplay of Marty, which led to the Oscar-winning film version the next year. They had the same writer, director, and at least one cast member.

Thanks for the list! I know I'll use this this challenge and have already watched those two shorts. Shorts for me, along with documentaries, are the hardest for me to watch. I live in a small enough town and far enough away from anywhere big enough, that it's hard for me to access them in most ways. I had watched Piper before but not Borrowed Time. I recommend both!

This happens to me once in awhile. I'll get to the library and it's a VHS. I am glad I kept my player as well!

Re: The 11th Annual Academy Award Challenge (January 24, 2017 - February 26, 2017)

One nice thing about this Challenge, is that it covers a wide variety of genres, and even shorts and cartoons are included. I was in the mood for some horror this morning, and thought, why not a classic Universal Monster movie. So I brought out my Universal Monsters Blu Ray set, and watched Bride Of Frankenstein. The Universal Monster Movies are a rare breed where the sequels always live up to the original, in my opinion.

So I had a black girl magic theme going for today. Here are my letterboxd reviews for Hidden Figures and The Color Purple if folks are interested.

I was just about to lament that three-quarters of the nominees aren't going to be available until after the challenge.

Then I saw your list... more than I'd counted, and a few more than expected! I'll have to update my list...

I just used the AA search to see which Monster films are eligible. Bemused to see that all the "Invisible" sequels were nominated for effects (Returns, Woman, Agent), but not The Invisible Man it/himself.

Was there a TV/Oscars crossover lost created one year...?

Half the original Star Trek films, all the new ones. Lone Ranger. All six Star Wars'...

Assuming TCM's February schedule is all-nominees/winners (as it usually is), it's here. Interestingly, they've scheduled the month alphabetically - A to T.

Thanks for that. I thought Arrival was later, so that's good. The last three are cutting it close...

I know. I felt the same way, since The Invisible Man was the only one of those I owned, but Returns, is on Svengoolie on Saturday night, if anyone gets MeTV.

Re: The 11th Annual Academy Award Challenge (January 24, 2017 - February 26, 2017)

I attempted a marathon of The Hobbit movies tonight, but ended up turning it off in the middle of Desolation Of Smaug. Maybe marathons of those movies are something you really need to prepare yourself for mentally ahead of time. Oh well. Less to watch when I go to finish them.
